A Word from Fr. Drummond * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Last weekend twenty of our younger parishioners made both their First Confession and First Communion. On Saturday immediately after the 8:30 a.m. Mass they made their First Confession in preparation for their First

Communion which they received at the 10:30 Sunday Mass. Previously the reception of these two sacraments were separated by weeks or even a month or longer. We decided to effectively “join” the Sacraments on one weekend so that the children could more readily make the connection between the two Sacraments. One of the sad realities of our time is that the connection between Confession and Communion has been largely forgotten. Most Catholics receive Communion every Sunday —often invalidly— while seldom bothering to go to Confession beforehand. The whole point of offering Confession on Saturday is to be able to worthily receive the Eucharist —Communion— on Sunday. The loss of a sense of sin in today’s society has led to numerous sacrilegious Communions on Sunday. This, in turn, leads to a breakdown in belief in the Eucharist as the very Body and Blood of Christ. Just before the children were to make their First Confession I reviewed with them the basics of the Sacrament and then asked them when they should make their next Confession. One lad piped up, “In the Seventh Grade,” at which I cried out loudly, “No, NO, NO.” This actually reflects another sad phenomenon of our time, namely that many young people having made their First Confession do not go to Confession again until just before Confirmation. And how tragic that is. The Precepts of the Church require the use of the Sacrament at least once a year. But that is not nearly often enough. My recommendation is that Confession should be made at least once a month and maybe even every other week and immediately should one suspect that they may be in the state of mortal sin. Some people think because they have no mortal sins to confess that they do not need the Sacrament. That is like a person who does not take vitamins because he is already healthy. Regular use of the Sacrament can actually strengthen us morally and keep us from every committing a mortal sin! An awareness of sin and of the need for the Sacrament of Confession is tied up in our belief in the Eucharist as the Body and Blood of Christ. The stronger our belief in the Eucharist, the stronger our desire to receive worthily —not just free from mortal sin but free from all sin— to receive in a state of purity that we may be Holy just as our Father in Heaven is Holy. To this end the Sacrament of Reconciliation —Confession— is regularly offered at St. Michael’s. Not just Saturday afternoons and evenings, but during the week Monday thru Friday at 7:30 a.m., and Wednesday evenings as well. Let us pray in a special way for the twenty boys and girls who celebrated their first reception of these most precious Sacraments, and let us be inspired by them so that we ourselves all of us may more worthily receive these Sacraments.

The YD is not a typical youth ministry; it is an "open time" for grow-ing in one's personal relationship with Jesus of Nazareth - in a way that calls us all to mature into authentic disciples. A typical night is 7:30-8:10 - basketball, recreation, and conversation; 8:10-8:45 - "The Learning" part. We can't love Christ if we don't know him / topics of faith in current events (usually suggested by the youth); and 8:50-9:00 - silent prayer in the Church.
