* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * A Word from Fr. Drummond

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Last week the office recieved an email from a non-parishioner who sometimes attends our daily noon Mass. This person was upset that there were people who were not wearing masks and suggested that the priests should remind people of the “rules” as she put it. The busybody nature of this email angered me, however I will remind people of the so-called rules. Executive Order 63 issued by the Governor of Virginia states in section A item number six: “Face coverings may be removed to participate in a religious ritual.” The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is most certainly a religious ritual. The Executive Order also lists exceptions. Section D item six states: “Persons with health conditions that prohibit wearing a face covering. Nothing in this order shall require the use of a face covering by any person for whom doing so would be contrary to his or her health or safety because of a medical condition.” The section goes on to say that “Any person who declines to wear a face covering because of a medical condition shall not be required to produce or carry medical documentation verifying the stated condition nor shall the person be required to identify the precise underlying condition.” There are any number of reasons why someone may wish to forgo wearing a mask ranging from asthma to lung cancer. And speaking as someone with lung cancer I have to say that it is often difficult for me to breathe with a mask on. That being said I would like to point out that masks unless they are medical grade or full plastic face covers may be a false panacea. If you can smell perfume through a mask, it is not keeping the virus out. And if you use a handkerchief to cough and sneeze in you will be doing as much if not more to prevent spreading any virus as if wearing a mask. Wash your hands, do not touch your face, and keep your distance from people and you will be ok. We have hand sanitizer at all the entrances and the pews are marked in such a way as to help you distance yourselves one from another. But do not worry about other people wearing or not wearing a mask.

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) • If you or someone you know (family, friend, neighbor, co-worker) is interested in learning more about the Catholic faith and maybe becoming part of us read on. • The RCIA is for the non-Baptized, those Baptized but not as Catholics, and Baptized Catholics who have not received the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucha-rist/Holy Communion. • Weekly meetings will begin after Labor Day and ultimately how far anyone goes is up to the individuals who come. Our intention is to respond to a curiosity or yearning. • Given today’s environment, the meetings will be offered both in person and virtually, and we will follow relevant public health advisories.

To answer your questions and get further information, please call or email Dcn. Dave McCaffrey ([email protected], 571-643-6895).
