Letter from the Rectory
Dear Friends,
This month marks the 500th
Anniversary of the birth of the
Reformation, when Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses onto the door of the
castle chapel in the German town of Wittenberg on 31st October 1517. He
was objecting to various practices in the Catholic Church, in particular
indulgences – the belief that certain prayers or good deeds could remit
punishment in purgatory. In the Middle Ages the sale of indulgences had
become common.
Whilst reaction from many church leaders and scholars was hostile,
Luther’s views gathered momentum across Western Europe. Henry VIII was
much influenced by Luther’s writing as he moved England towards the break
with Rome and established the Church of England.
Martin Luther believed that all church teaching must be based on the
Bible. At that time, many placed Christian tradition alongside the Bible as a
source of Church doctrine. Luther emphasized the primacy of Scripture. He
didn't reject tradition outright; he respected the writings of the Early Church
Fathers and considered the Creeds binding on the church, but these should be
judged by “the sure rule of God’s word.”
For Luther, the Church did not take priority over the Bible; rather, the
Church is the creation of the Bible. “For who begets his own parent?” he
asked. “Who brings forth his own maker?”
As we look back on the events of half a millennium ago, we can be
grateful for how much has changed in relationships between Catholics and
Protestants, particularly during the past couple of generations. Like Martin
Luther, many in both traditions agree that the Bible is not a set of ancient
texts but a living account of God’s involvement in our world and our
individual lives; and that it is important that it should retain its primary place
within Christian life and worship.

Churchwardens' Notes September This year’s Flower Festival on the theme of Celebrations was a resounding
success. Once again the arrangements were breathtaking complementing the
beautiful surroundings of the church itself. The accompanying leaflet setting out the
locations of the displays was ably annotated by the Rector who was able to find an
apt biblical reference to almost all of the themes covered. Our thanks to everyone
involved, not forgetting the volunteers who stewarded the event and organised the
refreshments. There was great” feed back” from visitors and a substantial sum was
donated towards church funds.
A Songs of Praise Service was held on the Sunday during the festival, which
was well attended, and many favourite hymns were sung with great gusto.
The Family Service annual barbeque was held in the rectory garden in early
September. The weather held for the event and the waterslide once again proved to
be very popular with the children. Many thanks to our BBQ chef, Paul Radford,
who slaved away until the last sausage was consumed, and to all those who provided
salads and puddings.
As we write, Harvest Festival is with us once again. The church is again
decorated with stunning arrangements and more thanks are offered to all involved
and for the gifts for Family Support.
We are able to report that finally progress has been made with the updating
of the church heating system. Contractors have been appointed, and work is
planned to begin on Monday 18th October. It is hoped that, if all goes well, the
works will be completed by Christmas. Our aim is for minimal disruption to our
services but there will obviously be a period when we will be operating temporary
heating arrangements. These will probably not be hugely effective due to the size
of the building, so please don an extra layer of clothing whilst the work is
undertaken. Richard Carden and Anthony Cumberland

St Michael’s Flower Festival The flower festival was a great success, judging by all the comments in the
Visitors’ Book, which reflected the admiration for the flowers and our beautiful
church. Although it was not intended as a money raising event, the donations raised
£1,750 for church funds.
Thanks must go to Molly Packer and Kath Stillwell who devised the
festival, decided on the celebrations and chose the flowers for each arrangement.
The church flower arrangers then did a magnificent job with the arrangements.
Thanks must also go to June Noble, who organised the refreshments, which
were well received (and free!) and to James Campbell, who provided the brilliant
biblical references for all the celebrations for inclusion in the programmes.

News from the Belfry On Monday 11th September there was a practise in the evening at Withyham
by the Northern district of the Sussex County Association of Change Ringers. There
was a good variety of different methods rung . Some of the advance ringing was a
good challenge to those of us from our own tower.

Remembrance Sunday,
12th November 2017 at 12:30 p.m. ALL SAINTS' CHURCH, BLACKHAM
LYCH-GATE WAR MEMORIAL
‘We will remember them’ Every November, on Remembrance Sunday, our village remembers. At the church
lych-gate Blackham residents come together, passing cars slow down and a Royal
British Legion standard bearer attends. The gathering is for a short ceremony to
remember those who sacrificed their lives to war. The lych-gate memorial is
dedicated to Blackham villagers and the ceremony includes the reading of their
names, followed by two minutes' silence.
In recent years, relatives of those named on the memorial have visited Blackham to
join in the short ceremony, to which everyone is welcome.
The Village hall will be open beforehand and afterwards when coffee, tea and
biscuits will be served for all attending. There will also be a small exhibit about
our village history.
If you are interested in finding out more about those who laid down their lives and
how two World Wars affected Blackham people, visit www.blackham-

The Blackham Picnic at Highfields Park 26th
June 1902 The 1902 Coronation of Edward VII was originally scheduled for 26 June
1902. However, on 24 June Edward was diagnosed with appendicitis and needed
immediate surgery. So the coronation was postponed at very short notice.
The photograph below is displayed in the Blackham Village hall. It is a
copy of an original photograph titled 'Blackham Picnic – Highfields Park – 26 June
1902'. As befitted the occasion everyone is dressed in their very best finery.
The photograph shows the whole village sitting in front of Highfields.
The picnic was planned for the original coronation day, and still went ahead due to
the short notice of the coronation ceremony being postponed.
From Kent & Sussex Courier 15 August 1902
BLACKHAM While London raised its voice in gratitude, and hailed the floating of the
“the gladdest day of all the year” as becomes the greatest city in the world, villages and hamlets pursued their courses of humble homage in that atmosphere of simplicity which pervades rusticity, and makes it for all times as fascinating to observe.
The 272 persons populating Blackham, for instance, released from the common round, spent the morning hours in looking into mirrors and arranging the most presentable toilets, for the weather was typical of the month beloved by Dickens – with clear skies, green fields, and sweet-smelling flowers on every hand.
In the afternoon they strolled up to Highfield Park, and immersed themselves in the lengthy programme of sports which had been drawn up.

Family Support Work - Once again an
enormous thank you to everyone who donated
goods at Harvest Festival for FSW. Your
generosity, kindness and warmth is very much
appreciated by Michelle of Families in Crisis and
also by me. All of the Harvest goods having been
sorted were duly packed into Michelle's car and we
were then in a position to distribute to our families.
The work of FSW remains challenging at
times, although extremely worthwhile. Some of
you may remember an 11year old girl who I have
been supporting recently. She very much enjoyed
the residential holiday she had back in June.
Additionally I'm pleased to say she has settled well
into her new school and has gained more
confidence, even joining an after school club which is an enormous step forward for
her. Once again please accept my most sincere thanks for your support and
kindness.

WITHYHAM PARISH COUNCIL (WPC) NOTES September
Groombridge Place Planning Application: This was discussed and a number of
suggestions were proposed for submission to WDC
ESCC Report: ESCC reported that Butcherfield Lane has been resurfaced.
The timing of the traffic lights at the Cross in Crowborough are due to be altered in
the next couple of weeks, to reduce traffic queuing from Lye Green. There are
likely to be further budgetary cuts by ESCC, affecting many services such as the
mobile library.

evening of Thursday 12th October focussing on Scams and also the benefits of
neighbourhood watch. Please do pop it in your diary.

village hall car park and on the roads of Groombridge which have been registered
as SORN. These are being reported to DVLA, the Police and WDC.
St John’s: Concerns remain about the quality of grass cutting at roadside verges.
ESCC agreed that the current ESCC contract with Costain appears to be
unsatisfactory.
Withyham/Blackham: Cllr Obbard was elected Ward Chair. Congratulations
were expressed for the very successful Flower Festival held in Withyham Church.
Balls Green Community Space: It is hoped that a BBQ will be held in Spring
2018, when the grass has grown and the flowers are out to celebrate the realisation
of this project. There was a vote of thanks for the volunteers who have worked so
hard.
Groombridge Playground Refurbishment: A Working Group is to be set up, and
anyone interested should contact the Clerks.
Parish Boundary Walk: 25 people joined in on the first day and 16 on the
second, completing the 20+ miles. People made friends, enjoyed the wonderful
and varied scenery in our parish, and had fun. The Rights of Way Committee was
thanked for all the work it had done planning the event.
Groombridge Post Office: The acceptance of the application of the owner of the
Village Store to take on a post office counter is awaited. Our thanks to him for
continuing with a long and complicated process involved!
Air Pollution: WPC is considering the purchase of equipment required to ascertain
levels of nitrogen dioxide in the parish.

and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service on a road safety campaign. There will be
