Feast of the Ascension

Reading I

Acts 1: 1-11

As the Apostles were looking

on, Jesus was taken up.

Reflection: The celebration of the

Ascension of Jesus Christ shifts our gaze

from the empty tomb of the Easter event to

the open skies of Pentecost. In this

passage from the Acts of the Apostles,

Jesus promises to offer His life to His

followers through the gift of the Holy

Spirit. His Holy Spirit will empower His

disciples to witness His life in the world.

Do my words of encouragement and deeds

of hope reveal the Holy Spirit dwelling

within me?

Psalm 47 God mounts his throne to shouts of joy:

a blare of trumpets for the Lord. [Alleluia]

Reading II Eph 1: 17-23

Christ has entered into heaven itself.

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT: The very heart of St. Matthew the Apostle Catholic Church is Jesus Christ present on the

altar. Our mission, born at that altar, is to be sent forth into our neighborhood in order to

build up the Kingdom of God. The labor of this effort must address in deed more than in

word the needs of our people.

Reflection: In his letter to the Ephesians,

St. Paul invites the followers to live with eyes

of faith. The power of the Almighty raised up

Jesus from the dead and brings Jesus to Him

in heaven. All powers and dominions are

placed at the feet of Jesus. Our Salvation

History with its hopes and longings are found

in Jesus. Do I place my trust in the way and

life of Jesus?

Gospel

Matthew 28: 16-20

All power in heaven and on

earth has been given to Me.

Reflection: In Matthew’s gospel, we hear

how the power of Jesus overcomes the fear

and distrust in people. Jesus asks His

disciples to acknowledge His power in

heaven and on earth. He sends them forth,

baptizing all people in the fullness of His life:

Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Do I believe in

the fullness of God’s life within, so as to be

His follower who brings His life to all who I

meet?

St. Matthew Parish resumes public Masses in our

Church beginning Tuesday, May 26 with new safety

requirements and protocol for everyone.

Anima Christi

Soul of Christ, sanctify me.

Body of Christ, save me.

Blood of Christ, inebriate me.

Water from the side of Christ, wash me.

Passion of Christ, strengthen me.

O good Jesus, hear me.

Within your wounds, hide me.

Permit me not to be separated from you.

From the wicked enemy defend me.

At the hour of my death call me,

bid me come to your side, that with your

saints I may praise you forever and ever.

Amen

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Our Parish Staff and the members of the

Spiritual Life and Worship Commission met

to evaluate the Archdiocesan guidelines and

safety requirements before creating our parish

protocol to resume public Mass. Their

reflection centered on everyone’s well being

in mind, body and spirit. Suggestions offered

guidelines for the safety of everyone. Those

guidelines are found on the follow page of the

bulletin and on our parish web site.

Our North City Deanery experienced the

closing of one of the two Catholic Elementary

Schools. Most Holy Trinity School has

closed. St. Louis Catholic Academy is

accepting families for the new school year.

The feast of the Ascension strengthens our

concerns for the well being of the community.

This Memorial Day weekend celebrates the

sacrifice of individual lives for the common

good. We are grateful for their sacrifice. Our

parish office is closed tomorrow, Monday

May 25 for the Holiday.

Pentecost Masses, Saturday, May 30th and

Sunday, May 31st resume in the Church with

our new guidelines and protocol.

St. Matthew Protocol and Guidelines

for returning to Church

The guidelines specific to St. Matthew Parish follows the Archdiocesan protocol.

Everyone must enter the Church single file, up the handicap ramp between the Church and

the Parish Office/ Rectory. Our temperature will be taken and masks must be worn, before

each person will be directed to a place to sit. Masks remain on throughout the service.

There are no processions in the Church. Directions will be given on how to receive

communion. We will be given directions on how to exit the Church. The office/ rectory is

not open for meetings and all social gatherings are prohibited. We will continue to observe

how things progress and make adjustments, in order to keep everyone safe.

The Archbishop has extended the dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday

Mass. For those who remain at home, daily Mass at 8am continues to be live-streamed from

the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis: https://www.archstl.org/coronavirus

All are welcome to return using the established guidelines and protocols.
