The Rite of Confirmation

Laying on of Hands After the Priest’s invitation to pray, all do so in silence. The Priest will extend his hands over those to be confirmed. This expresses the biblical gesture by which the gift of the Holy Spirit is invoked. Priest: Prayer of Invocation All: Amen

Anointing and Sign of Peace The deacon brings the Chrism to the Priest. Each candidate goes to the Priest with his or her sponsor. With the sponsor’s right hand on the candidate’s right shoulder, the sponsor gives the candidate’s chosen name to the Priest. The Priest then dips his thumb into the Chrism and he makes the sign of the cross on the forehead of the one being confirmed as he says:

“_____________ be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.” Newly Confirmed responds: “AMEN!” The Priest then offers the newly Confirmed a sign of peace.

Priest: “Peace be with you” Newly Confirmed: “And with your spirit!” The anointing with the Chrism and the accompanying words express the effects of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Signed with oil, the baptized person receives the seal of the Lord together with the gifts of the Holy Spirit, conforming them more closely to Christ and giving them the grace to spread the Lord’s presence among all people.

During the anointing all are asked to pray silently for the candidates as they come forward, while our music ministry sings.

The Prayer of the Faithful Reader: Daniela Caughron All: “Holy Spirit, hear our prayer.”
