Deceased: Please pray for Mary Melanson. May she rest in the peace of Christ.

Parish Office Closed: The Par ish office is closed, however you may leave a message on the phone (860)658-7627 or email [email protected].

Weekly Offertory: Due to the current situation, we will be reporting the total offertory for April at the end of the month.

Assisting our Health Care Workers: Saint Francis Hospital has need of surgical masks, latex gloves, N95 masks, and protective gear (PPE) – personal protective equipment. If you have such supplies that you would like to donate, please contact our Property Manager, Mr. Kyle Meccariello, (860)595-3781, [email protected] who is coordinating this project.

Sacrament of Reconciliation: Because of the Covid-19 crisis, the Archdiocese has suspended the hearing of confessions until further notice. When the crisis is over, we shall have extended confessional hours. Even though you cannot receive the Sacrament at this time, you can always make a perfect Act of Contrition to ex-press your profound sorrow and need for forgiveness. And God, who is always merciful, will offer that for-giveness.

First Holy Communion: In light of the present sit-uation, First Holy Communion has been rescheduled from May 2 to June 20. On that day there will be two ceremonies, one at 10:00 AM and another at 1:00 PM.

Thank You For Your Financial Support of Saint Mary’s: I wish to thank all who have continued to support the parish through E-Giving and by sending in their weekly envelopes during this period. This is a difficult time for all of us, emotionally and financially. To the extent you can continue to support Saint Mary’s (which has fixed and on-going expenses) I and your fellow parishioners are most grateful. Fr. Matera

AAA: The Archbishop’s Annual Appeal changes lives through service. In addition to assisting the underserved of our communities, your gift helps those discerning a vocation to the priesthood. Your gift to the Appeal is an investment in the future of our Church and our faith. Thank you to the parish families who have made a gift or pledge to the 2020 Appeal. If you have not yet participated, please prayerfully consider a gift today.

Food Collection: There will be a food collection for the Simsbury Food Pantry and St. Elizabeth House this Sunday, April 19, 10:00 AM-2:00 PM. Items that are needed are canned stew and soups, pasta, canned fruit and vegetables, peanut butter, jelly, coffee, cereals, toi-let paper, bleach, paper towels, personal and first aid items. You may drop off items in the Magowan Center. Contact: Melanie Livingston at [email protected].

Thank You! A hear tfelt thank you to all who so generously donated to the Mercy Shelter, House of Bread, and South Park Inn collection last weekend. Many lives were touched by you!

Do You Need Help? These are difficult days for many people. Some have lost jobs and are struggling to pay bills. Others are finding it difficult to cope with the isolation caused by this pandemic. If you need help, please contact Father Matera. Parishioners have given us food cards that will be of assistance to you. There is also a parish charities account that is intended to assist those in need. Finally, if you wish, our Stephen Ministers will gladly speak with you and accompany you during this difficult period.

The Second Sunday of Easter

Faith and Doubt

in the Face of Covid-19

Every year, on the second Sunday of Easter, we read the gospel about the Apostle Thomas (John 20:19-29) who refused to believe unless he could put his finger into the place where the nails had fastened Jesus to the cross, and his hands into the wound that the soldier’s lance had caused in Jesus’s side. “Give me proof, and I will believe” Thomas says. “Show me the evidence for the resurrection, and I will believe. Let me know beyond doubt that God raised Jesus from the dead, and I will believe.”

But faith doesn’t work that way, does it? Faith does not require evidence or proof, only trusting faith. Trusting faith in the God who raises the dead does not need proof. Real faith is born of love: love for God and love for Christ.

Do you believe in your beloved because he or she has given you “proof” of their love? Do you love your beloved because you have evidence that dispels every doubt? Or, do you be-lieve because you love? When we love, then we believe. And if we believe, then we love.

Many people are having a difficult time believing these days. In the midst of this virus some are asking: “If God is love, why is this happening to me? If God loves me, why isn’t God delivering us? Where is the proof of God’s love for us?”

The proof of God’s love for us is the cross. It has always been the cross. It will always be the cross. All the proof we need is that Jesus died on the cross. There is no further need for evidence.

God does not force us to believe; God invites us to believe. God does not coerce us to love; God invites us to love. God loves us, and when we return God’s love, there is nothing too difficult to believe.

Thomas believed because he saw Jesus. We are more blessed than Thomas. For even though we have not seen Jesus, we believe in him because we love the one we cannot see. As Saint Peter puts it: Although you have not seen him you love him; even though you do not see him, you rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, as you attain the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

May God continue to bless you and your family during these difficult days.

Staying Connected through the Word: You will find a new Liturgy of the Word on our Website every day. These Liturgies of the Word consist of the readings for the day, a brief homily by Father Matera, and a time for spiritual communion. These Liturgies, which are produced through the professional services of our parishioner, Jay Reynolds, are 15 minutes. Watch them with the whole family and your loved ones and stayed connected with us through the Word. To access the website, go to www.stmarysims-bury.org.

Here is Something You Can Do: If you are looking for a way to grow in faith these days and become more alive in Christ, read the Acts of the Apostles. This is one of the longer books of the New Testament (28 chapters). It is a kind of history of the early Church. More than just a histo-ry, however, it provides us with instruction on how to live our lives in the light of the resurrection. Read a chapter a day and you will finish it in a month.

You can watch Mass on television: The television Mass is broadcast seven days a week at 10:00 AM on WCCT-TV (WB20) and WCTX-TV (MyTV9). It can also be viewed Saturday and Sunday at 5:00 AM on WCCT-TV. The Mass from ORTV can also be found streaming live at these times on http://www.ortv.org/streaming/streaming. htm.

Funerals: At the present time we can do bur ials at the graveside but not funerals. When the crisis is over, how-ever, we will arrange for a Memorial Mass for your be-loved at which you can celebrate his or her life and hope for resurrection life in a public manner.

Visit the Church: The church is open every day from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM for prayer and visitation. Enter through the Magowan Center and spend some time in ado-ration before Christ in the Blessed Sacrament.

St. Mary's Helping Hands Committee: The Women's Guild would like to offer prepared, delivered meals or grocery shopping to anyone who is sick and homebound, or to those who are too vulnerable to go out in public. If you are in need, please contact Pam Carter at [email protected].

Distance Youth Groups! Youth Ministry will be host-ing distance youth groups until we can meet again on Zoom. The links are up on the youth group portion of the St. Mary’s Website. Jr. High Youth Group is open to all 7th and 8th graders on Monday evenings at 6:30PM, and High School Youth Group is on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 PM. Join us as we play and pray each week.

Religious Education Program, Grades 1-6 has transi-tioned to an online format. The curriculum guides are available on our website. Any questions, contact Kathy Piggott at [email protected].

The last 2 clas-ses for confirmation 3/22 and 4/5 were moved to an online format. Each person has received a link or information by email to be able to attend. It is very important that our communication stays open, so please make sure emails are being read and if you have not already, sign up for remind text messages. Year 1 students and parents: text @1con2019 to the

number 81010 Year 2 students and parents: text @2con2019 to the

number 81010 Anyone else with a student in high school who would

like to keep up with information on alternative youth groups and other plans moving forward can text @smhsreled to the number 81010

St. Mary's School will remain closed until May 20th as ordered by Governor Lamont. Enrollment for 2020-21 in grades PreK thru 8th is still open! Please contact Toni Chagnon for more information at [email protected] or go to www.stmarysschoolsims-bury.org to request an Admissions packet.

Cards of Thanks & Encouragement: SMS is working hard, creating cards filled with positive messages for the greater community. Third grade teacher Mrs. Pabich Phillips has organized an initiative for students to make cards thanking the medical staff at St. Francis Hospital for their fearless work during these unprecedented times. Our Librarian, Mrs. Mortillaro is also collecting cards for local Simsbury seniors who can no longer go to Eno Hall for lunch where our middle school students volunteer eve-ry Wednesday. If you would like more information on how you can help or where to drop off cards, please contact To-ni Chagnon - [email protected].
