Could I please remind secondary parents to check Skoolbag on a regular basis. At the Pri-
mary campus we are sending most of the information out via Class Dojo and this seems to
be very effective. Both Skoolbag and Class Dojo are convenient ways to send messages to
the parent community and it saves the environment. Our face book page is also doing very
well so if you‟d like to join this group you need to email Mary Nicola and give her your
face book name: [email protected]
What a great day we all had for the Mother‟s Day celebrations. This year saw a large num-
ber of mums and grandmothers visiting the secondary campus for a yummy breakfast.
Sherry Selim supported Mary Nicola on Friday morning to provide a lovely breakfast and
sell gifts to the secondary students. I‟d like to acknowledge both of them for the wonder-
ful atmosphere you created.
Of course Mother‟s Day was also a huge success at Primary. After Mass the children and
their mums plus many other family members gathered on the playground and in the Hall
for a BBQ breakfast. Again there was Sherry Selim running around making sure it all went
smoothly. Thank you to the P&F helpers for manning the stall and cooking the BBQ. The
happiness on the playground was very evident.
On Friday 11 May, Year 11 invited mums and other family members to the Secondary
Campus for a High Tea. Whilst it was a little chilly, the warmth radiated from the guests
and we had a lovely time sampling the savoury and sweet delights provided by a number of
volunteers. Well done Mrs Radford and Year 11!
We are looking forward to Grandparents afternoon at the Primary on 1 June. Last year
we found the grandparents were excited to see their grandchildren but they were even
more excited to catch up with each other. The afternoon will start earlier at 1:15pm so
there‟ll be more time to talk and connect with the children and each other.
Preparations for 2019 are about to begin with a subject market for year 10 on Tuesday
12 June. On Tuesday evening parents and year 10 students will attend an information
evening when Ms Garlick with explain the procedures for senior study and some of the
changes to Year 11 subjects. For more information about changes to Year 11 and Year 12

NAPLAN
Our Year 3, 5, 7, and 9 students have now completed their NAPLAN testing in both Literacy and Numeracy. The NAPLAN results will be re-leased in August. These results provide us with information on how stu-dents are performing in the areas of Literacy and Numeracy. It also en-
ables us to analyse the students performance across the Nation.
ANZAC Day Service
Thank you to all parents and students that brought in flowers for our an-nual Anzac Day Service. Mr Hugh Quinn and Mr Clem Goodwin attended the service and they enjoyed answering questions from our Year 6 stu-dents during morning Tea. All students were sincere throughout the ser-
vice and paid their respect to the fallen soldiers. Lest We Forget.
Mother’s Day Celebration This year‟s mother‟s day celebrations was a fantastic day with many of our mothers attending Mass with their children. Following Mass was a Sausage
sizzle breakfast at the College. to celebrate Mother‟s Day. Thank you
to the P&F and to all parents that helped throughout the day. I would like to thank the Fathers as well for attending the Mother's Day celebration
with us.
Gymnastics
The K-2 Gymnastics clinic has commenced at Hurstville Aquatic centre and students are thoroughly enjoying learning different skills associated with Gymnastics. Students are learning different skills such as balancing and using the trampoline. A reminder for all students to be at school by
8:30am so they do not miss the bus.
Robotics
Since the introduction of Robotics to the College. Classes have thoroughly
enjoyed using the Robots for Higher Order Thinking activities.
Pizza Lunch
The College would like to congratulate everyone that fundraised money for our Fun Run which will be going towards school resources. The high-est fundraising students/class were rewarded with a Pizza Lunch to acknowledge their efforts. We managed to fundraise $2323.85 our highest fundraising class was Year 3 and our highest individual fundraiser was
Joshua Hanna and Jonathan Mina raising $300.

Anxiety and excitement have a lot in common. They are both arousal emotions. This means when
you are feeling either anxiety or excitement your heart beats faster, your cortisol increases and
your body prepares for action. The main difference between these emotions is how they are inter-
preted. Excitement is deemed to be a positive emotion. Studies are now suggesting that when a per-
son is feeling anxious, it is beneficial from them to tell themselves they are feeling excited instead.
Next time you are feeling anxious about an upcoming event or test, rather than dwelling on your
anxiety, tell yourself that you are feeling excited instead. Simply say, “I am excited”.
A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance,
But by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.

As part of our work in Literacy in Term 2, the kindergarten students have been working
very hard this term in perfecting their reading and writing. During the start of this term
our main focus has been to identify the main purpose and structure of a description. For
some of our lessons, we have been focusing on the grammatical features used in a de-
scription and have been writing descriptive sentences using adjectives, as a class. By using
the Interactive Whiteboard, Skwirk and Reading Eggs, students have been able to identify
what a description looks like and how to write one. We have been learning how to de-
scribe different things such as animals and objects. The information that is then collected,
is used to create a description and the students have shown great enthusiasm in wanting
to write sentences on their own. During reading, the Kindergarten students have shown
great improvement in decoding words and are beginning to read independently during
reading groups. Students are also given the opportunity to work with a teacher in small
groups on a daily basis and are learning to read different types of texts.

Last week, in one of our science lessons the Year 1 students learnt about the dif-
ference between cooked and uncooked spaghetti. Did you know that cooked spa-
ghetti grows slightly in length when it is submerged in boiling water?
Year 1 also looked at how we can use spaghetti in different ways depending on
what we need it to do. For example cooked spaghetti is great for making a fun
and exciting artwork and uncooked spaghetti is great for building a tower and
making shapes.
Finally, Year 1 also read and enjoyed a funny poem all about spaghetti. After this
they chose a part of the poem to create our own wiggly spaghetti artwork.
The Year 1 students thoroughly enjoyed this hands on activity and were excited
to take their spaghetti art home!
“I found it so much fun” – Joneer Ibrahim
“I liked filling up my picture of the bathtub with spaghetti” – Marc Attia
“I enjoyed being able to colour in my picture first” – Reese Refuerzo

Students in Year 2 are currently undertaking a computer skills program in order to strengthen their knowledge,
confidence and efficiency when using different types of IT. With NAPLAN moving online from 2019, our aim is to
have our students familiar with all aspects of using a PC. Pictured below is a typing activity which allows students
to become more familiar with the layout of the keyboard and the special functions of certain keys and their com-
binations when pressed together.
Did you know that pressing „Shift‟ while typing a letter makes
it a capital?
Did you also know that typing requires less energy than writ-
ing and is a much faster way to get your thoughts down?

Year 4 - Science This term in Year 4, we are studying the transfer of heat, as part of science.
The students wrote down their previous knowledge of heat as well as some
questions they would like to research during the term. At the end of the top-
ic, students will write down what they know to see how much they have
learned and whether any of their beliefs about heat have changed.
While studying the topic, students took part in some investigative work. They
walked around the room touching various materials to see which felt cold and
which felt warm. They were then introduced to the terms insulator and con-
ductor.
In pairs, they researched various materials using iPads to see which materials
made the best insulators and conductors.
Following this, they had lots of fun designing experiments to see who could
keep an ice cube solid for the longest, by wrapping it in their chosen insula-
tors.
Well done to Jacob and David, the winners of the ice cube challenge!

'Year 3 have been studying „The Lorax‟ by Dr. Seuss as their term 2 text.
Students have been learning to work in groups in order to compose a post-
er, comparing and contrasting the change which has occurred throughout.
Students through their posters have portrayed their understanding of the
change which factories can have on the environment, the effects of defor-
estation and the ways in which it can impact animals and wildlife. Students
have also been able to compare and contrast the metamorphosis which
was undertaken by the 'Once-ler' and his behavioural change from being
greedy to having a change of heart, students were able to relate this other
texts which they have come across, where by the main character under-
goes a positive change in his/her behaviour. Through the study of the novel
'The Lorax' by Dr Seuss, students have been exposed to a variety of differ-
ent literary devices such as similes, metaphors and alliteration. Students
have successfully learnt the ways in which these various devices can impact
the reader and persuade them in to a certain direction'

In class this term 5F have been studying the Informative Text
Type in the form of a description.
First 5F learnt about what a description was:
A description text is a text which explains the features of some-
thing. It allows readers or listeners to form an idea in their mind
about what things are like. Description texts can inform about
what something looks, feels, smells, tastes and sounds like. A de-
scription can be a short paragraph or form part of a longer text.
Descriptions can be of physical things and objects, events or na-
ture.
When looking at the structure of a description, the thing be-
ing describes first needs to be defined or identified. After the
introduction is where you would tell about the subject itself.
A good description is always full of adjectives and even ad-
verbs wherever possible.
During class 5F have read and analysed description texts,
written a jointly constructed description and also created
their own descriptions. The class were also taught how to
use an app we have on our iPads, called ChatterPix. This app
lets you take a photo of something, draw a mouth on it and
then record your voice to make it look like the photo itself is
speaking. 5F used this app to create their own independent
and unique verbal descriptions, of items and images from
around the classroom. Each of these videos was then com-
plied together, ready to present to the rest of the school
community as our Friday Friends Class Presentation in week
4. The students were all extremely engaged in this task and
really enjoyed making them too, which resulted in them cre-
ating fantastic descriptions.

Over the last couple of weeks year 6 has been focusing their learning on the area of Data. They have
worked very hard to pose questions and collect categorical and numerical data by observation, survey
and research. They showed real interest in being able to display the data that they collected into vari-
ous graphs, including column graphs, line graphs and pie charts. In order to create more accurately
drawn graphs and to further develop their skills, year 6 turned to ICT. Year 6 were asked to do some
research in the computer lab. They needed to work in small groups to find the total population of 5 to
10 countries in any one given year. They collated their findings into tables and decided which graph
they would use to present their information. With teacher guidance, all the groups successfully used
Microsoft Excel in order to turn their findings into various graphs. They very much enjoyed seeing
their completed graphs and are feeling more confident in working with Microsoft Excel.

One the 3rd of May, we had an ANZAC ceremony in the church for the whole school. Special year
6 students were selected to run the assembly. During the ceremony, the teachers chose students
to come to the front and lay down flowers at the altar. At the ceremony, we had 2 special gusts.
The guest‟s names were Mr Hugh Quinn and Mr Clem Goodwin. They addressed the assembly and
gave a nice speech to help us better to understand what the ANZAC soldiers went through.
After the official assembly had ended, year 6 was invited to
attend a morning tea at the local Bexley RSL with our visi-

During Jolly Bops we learnt a lot of scientific facts. Throughout the show Rust the ro-
bot made us laugh and was very funny. In one of the experiments the man popped a
balloon and it made a big fire ball, it was quite scary and he taught us about different
gases and their properties. We thoroughly enjoyed the show and cannot wait for the

On the 17th of May, the students of St Mary and St Mina‟s Coptic Or-
thodox College were lucky enough to take part in another Jolly Bops
Incursion which took place in our school hall. There were two char-
acters that came to entertain us. One of those was Rusty the Robot,
who was very silly and funny. The other character was a serious scien-
tist who showed us many tricks and taught us a lot about science. He
showed us many science theories and themes that we had never seen
before.
There were many experiments which we got to watch as well as par-
ticipate in. In one of the experiments, the scientist added boiling wa-
ter to liquid nitrogen and it made a massive cloud due to the sudden
change of temperature.
The students were able to take part in most of the experiments and it
was a very hand-on incursion. Some students were a little scared to
get too close as sometimes there would be some loud sounds but we
all knew that we were safe. Overall, Jolly Bops is a great incursion
which taught us a lot and it was great fun.

On the 11th of May a fantastic and successful event „Mother‟s Day‟ was celebrated at St Mary and St
Mina‟s Coptic Orthodox College. The day started off with a Mass in which mothers attended and
joined us at the back of the church. It was lovely to see mothers there on their special day.
After mas had ended, there was a sausage sizzle and there was a massive line that seemed to never end
as people queued up to get more of those delicious sausages. While
the sausage sizzle was being held, the mother‟s day gift stall was selling
gifts inside the hall. There was a range of gifts to buy from as items
kept selling out. Students would run up and down from the hall to
their bags to try and hide their purchases from their mums.
Inside the hall were tables at which mothers were sitting while chatting
with other mothers and drinking their coffee. Photos were being taken
all over the playground as the heart frame was a big hit.
Mother‟s day was a very happy and eventful day as mothers celebrated their day.

third received a ribbon and extra house points.
The students who did really well in the fun run are moving on
to ASSISA Cross Country. All the students were asked to fund-
raise at least $10 to earn a prize. The students who fundraised
also earned themselves a pizza lunch.
St Mina was lucky enough to win the Fun Run. The house cap-

The Student Liason Officer addressed our students and parents on Monday 7 May to discuss the issue
of Cyberbullying and the impact social media has on our students and staff. Students were updated on
the latest laws and regulations regarding the use of social media, why it is important to stay safe, the
consequences of being unsafe online and how to report and block any unwanted activity.
Both staff and students have the right to feel safe when working on their devices, both during school
hours and out of school hours. Any behaviour which takes the right to feel safe away from a student
or staff member will be investigated by the College. Students who feel they or their peers have been
cyber bullied are encouraged to:
Screenshot the image or conversation
Block and report the bully
Report it to a parent, year advisor or Mrs Germann immediately.
Parents
It is important to manage your child‟s use of technology. This may include using parent controls to
restrict access to sites, monitor activity or manage screen time (giving your child time slots in which
he/she can use their phone/lap tops).
Teenagers need boundaries to the amount of screen time they have each day, as it can affect their
well-being. The Raising children website provides guidelines about the positive and negative effects
of screen time.
It is advised that each member of the family remove all forms of technology from the bedroom
(parents included).
Why Create a Technology-Free Bedroom
Better sleep
Using digital devices before bed can affect sleep in a number of ways:
The screen brightness – the light emitted from digital screens can fool the brain into not realising
it is night-time.
Electromagnetic radiation from the devices disrupts the release of melatonin, a hormone that
helps regulate sleep.
The excitement of the content (be it video games, television shows, or messaging friends via so-cial media) can induce a “fight or flight” response that inhibits the onset of sleep or prevents a deep
restful sleep.
Changing the sleeping environment by removing technology from the bedroom sets the scene for a
good night‟s sleep.

There are an increasing number of students arriving late to school, some of these are habitual offenders.
Generally, the excuse for this is traffic or sleeping in. The roads around our College are congested with
student drop off in the morning and the arrival of our school buses. However, families need to plan extra
time to cater for increasing traffic on our roads and ensure alarms are set each evening before retiring.
Please be reminded that students who arrive late to school three times in a week will be issued a Wednes-
day Afternoon Detention from 3.30 pm – 4.30 pm.
As you were all made aware at the beginning of 2018 students are expected to hand in their mobile
phones during roll call each morning. The reasons for this new policy are to encourage students to engage
socially with friends and to take the opportunity to disconnect with social media as it was becoming a dis-
traction to learning. Whilst we understand the necessity of phones due to safety and arrangement of
transport, there needs to be a level of responsibility in the use of mobile phones at school. The following
guidelines have been updated:
Phones should be switched off and handed to your child‟ Year Adviser during roll call each morning.
Students should not independently contact parents about an illness, incident etc. Communication with
parents must go through the appropriate College staff.
Students should never use mobile phones or devices whilst on camps, retreats, excursions etc without
express permission from the Year Adviser or supervising teacher.
For students who fail to do the right thing and not hand in their mobiles, it is not acceptable to use these
devices at recess, lunch, between lessons or in the toilet. If a student is caught using their phone or the
phone becomes visible the phone will be confiscated immediately and a parent will be asked to come and
collect it from either Mrs Veness or Mrs Germann.
We have also asked students to refrain from contacting parents directly if they are sick. If a student is sick
or upset they need to inform a teacher so we can deal with the situation appropriately and ensure the
child is cared for. Where necessary parents will then be contacted.
For those parents who attended the recent Police Talk, you will be aware of the pitfalls young people ex-
perience when using mobile phones excessively. Parental support in this matter would be appreciated.

way to inform parents/guardians of everything they
need to know, and it provides parents with the most
convenient way to receive school notifications.
