God blessed our lives with a modern day saint, St. Mother Teresa. The following are parts of her speech from
the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C, on February 5, 1994. She spoke from her heart about the right to life and her thoughts are still important today.
And for this I appeal in India and I appeal everywhere — “Let us bring the child back.” The child is God’s gift to the family. Each child is created in the special image and likeness of God for greater things — to love and to be loved. In this year of the family we must bring the child back to the center of our care and concern. This is the only way that our world can survive because our children are the only hope for the future. As older people are called to God, only their children can take their places.
But what does God say to us? He says: “Even if a mother could forget her child, I will not forget you. I have carved you in the palm of my hand.” We are carved in the palm of His hand; that unborn child has been carved in the hand of God from conception and is called by God to love and to be loved, not only now in this life, but forever. God can never forget us.
I will tell you something beautiful. We are fighting abortion by adoption — by care of the mother and adoption for her baby. We have saved thousands of lives. We have sent word to the clinics, to the hospitals and police stations: “Please don’t destroy the child; we will take the child.” So we always have someone tell the mothers in trouble: “Come, we will take care of you, we will get a home for your child.” And we have a tremendous demand from couples who cannot have a child — but I never give a child to a couple who have done something not to have a child. Jesus said, “Anyone who receives a child in my name, receives me.” By adopting a child, these couples receive Jesus but, by aborting a child, a couple refuses to receive Jesus.
If we remember that God loves us, and that we can love others as He loves us, then America can become a sign of peace for the world. From here, a sign of care for the weakest of the weak — the unborn child — must go out to the world. If you become a burning light of justice and peace in the world, then really you will be true to what the founders of this country stood for. God bless you!

THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 3, 2019
Saint Charles Borromeo, Bishop
Memorial - November 4
“God wishes us
not to rest
upon anything
but his infinite
goodness.”
-St. Charles Borromeo
From the Pastor’s Desk
November is the month when the Church especially reminds us to pray for the dead. But we might ask, “Why would we need to pray for the dead? After all, those in heaven don’t need our prayers, and for those who are not, it won’t do them any good.” Well, it turns out that there are some who can benefit from our prayers after death, and they are those who are in purgatory.
Unfortunately, purgatory is a teaching that is often very misunderstood. There are people nowadays who even think that the Church stopped teaching about it with the Second Vatican Council. This is rather puzzling since the Second Vatican Council itself taught about purgatory (see Lumen Gentium paragraphs 49 and 51). But the basic explanation of purgatory is that it is a temporary place of purification for those who are on their way to heaven but are still in need of further cleansing. It is not a place “between” heaven and hell. It’s a one way street; everyone in purgatory will eventually go to heaven, the only question is when.
The reason purgatory exists is that “nothing unclean shall enter [heaven]” (Revelation 21:27). Since even most faithful Christians die without hearts full of perfect love for God and detachment from sin, most of us still need more purification before we are ready to see God face to face. In fact, to be directly in God’s presence without being perfectly pure would be torture for us. Just imagine how it would feel to have all of your sins, flaws, and weaknesses on full display before the whole world. To experience this before the infinite majesty of God would be far worse. So we should be grateful that purgatory exists.
Scripture nowhere directly teaches purgatory in an explicit way, but it certainly does seem to imply it. Listen to Jesus’ words here: “Settle with your opponent quickly while on the way to court with him. Otherwise your opponent will hand you over to the judge, and the judge will hand you over to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison. Amen, I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny” (Mt 5:24-25). And in St. Paul’s words we see something similar: “fire will test the quality of each one’s work. If the work stands that someone built upon the foundation, that person will receive a wage. But if someone’s work is burned up, that one will suffer loss; the person will be saved, but only as through fire” (1 Cor 3:14-15).
As we can see, purgatory is not a fun place to be. It is painful. That is why it is usually associated with fire. But we can take comfort in the fact that those who suffer in purgatory still suffer with the peace of knowing that they are sure to be with God in heaven.
We can also take comfort in the fact that we can still help those in purgatory by our prayers. Our prayers help them because they are acts of love and “love covers a multitude of sins” (1 Peter 4:8). So remember to pray for the dead, even every day this November – for your loved ones, as well as for those who have no one to pray for them.
God Bless, Fr. Sandquist

Eucharistic Adoration During the Mass we give special attention to the moments when the priest lifts up the consecrated host. You may hear the bells ringing at this time to alert us that Jesus is now present in in the Eucharist. In the Middle Ages, people would come early to Mass to find a good location to see or gaze upon this great event. During this time of adoration of the Eucharist during the Mass, we gaze upon the Body and Blood of Christ and know that we are coming face to face with God.
Join us for our Family Formation on Wednesday, November 13th from 6:00-8:00pm, as we learn more about the Eucharist and what it means to deepen our relationship with God during this form of prayer that began centuries ago, Eucharistic Adoration.
Students in grades 2-12 – Are you interested in acting and/or singing in the Christmas Play? Parents are needed to help with practice and props after the 10Am Mass on Nov. 17, Nov. 24, and Dec. 1. Contact Terri or Jean if interested.

Next weekend our parish will take up the Collection for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS). Established by Saint John Paul II in 1985, the AMS is the only U.S. diocese responsible for providing pastoral care to men and women serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, enrolled at a U.S. Military Academy, being treated as a patient at any of the 153 U.S. department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, or working for the federal government beyond U.S. borders - including those from our own parish and diocese. Including families, AMS priests and deacons serve approximately 1.8 million Catholics who hail from 50 states and U.S. territories. While the salaries and retirement of Catholic military chaplains are paid for by the U.S. Government, the AMS does not receive any funding from the government or military for program and administrative costs. To learn more about the AMS, go to www.milarch.org/nationalcollection. Please see flyer insert (including an envelope for your convenience) in this weekend’s bulletin. Thank your for your generosity and prayers for this collection.
