Dear Brothers and Sisters,

At the centre of today’s Gospel (Mk 7:31-37), there is a small but very important word. A word that — in its deepest sense — sums up Christ’s whole message and all his work. The Evangelist Mark records this word in the very language of Jesus in which Jesus spoke it so that we may hear it even more vividly. The word is “Ephphatha”, which means “be opened”. Let us look at the context in which it is used. Jesus was crossing the region known as Decapolis, between the coast of Tyre and Sidon and Galilee, hence an area that was not Jewish. They brought him a deaf-mute to be healed — evidently Jesus’ fame had spread that far. Jesus took him aside and touched his ears and his tongue and then, looking up to heaven, said with a deep sigh: “Ephphatha” which means “be opened”. Then the man immediately began to hear and to speak plainly (cf. Mk 7:35).

This, therefore is the historical and literal meaning of this word: thanks to Jesus’ intervention, the deaf-mute “was opened”; previ-ously he had been closed, isolated, it had been very difficult for him to communicate. For him healing meant an “opening” to others and to the world, an opening which, starting with the organs of hearing and speech, involved his whole self and his life: he could at last communicate and thus relate in a new way.

However, we all know that a person’s closure and isolation do not only depend on the sense organs. There is an inner closure that affects the person’s inmost self, which the Bible calls the “heart”. It is this that Jesus came to “open”, to liberate, so as to enable us to live to the full our relationship with God and with others. This is why I said that this small word, “ephphatha — be opened”, sums up in itself Christ’s entire mission. He was made man so that man, rendered inwardly deaf and mute by sin, might be able to hear God’s voice, the voice of Love that speaks to his heart, and thus in his turn learn to speak the language of love, to communicate with God and with others. For this reason the word and the action of the “ephphatha” have been integrated into the Rite of Baptism as one of the signs that explain its meaning: the priest, touching the mouth and ears of the newly baptized person says: “ephphatha”, praying that he or she may soon hear the word of God and profess the faith. Through Baptism, the human person begins, so to speak, to breathe the Holy Spirit whom Jesus invoked from the Father with that deep sigh in order to heal the deaf-mute.

Let us now turn in prayer to Mary Most Holy, whose Nativity we celebrated yesterday. Because of her unique relationship with the Incarnate Word Mary was fully “open” to the Lord’s love, in her heart she was constantly listening to his word. May her maternal intercession obtain that every day, in faith, we experience the miracle of the “ephphatha”, to live in communion with God and with our brothers and sisters.

En el centro del Evangelio de hoy (Mc 7, 31-37) hay una pequeña palabra, muy importante. Una palabra que —en su sentido profun-do— resume todo el mensaje y toda la obra de Cristo. El evangelista san Marcos la menciona en la misma lengua de Jesús, en la que Jesús la pronunció, y de esta manera la sentimos aún más viva. Esta palabra es «Effetá», que significa: «ábrete». Veamos el contexto en el que está situada. Jesús estaba atravesando la región llamada «Decápolis», entre el litoral de Tiro y Sidón y Galilea; una zona, por tanto, no judía. Le llevaron a un sordomudo, para que lo curara: evidentemente la fama de Jesús se había difundido hasta allí. Jesús, apartándolo de la gente, le metió los dedos en los oídos y le tocó la lengua; después, mirando al cielo, suspiró y dijo: «Effetá», que significa precisamente: «Ábrete». Y al momento aquel hombre comenzó a oír y a hablar correctamente (cf. Mc 7, 35). He aquí el significado histórico, literal, de esta palabra: aquel sordomudo, gracias a la intervención de Jesús, «se abrió»; antes estaba cerrado, aislado; para él era muy difícil comunicar; la curación fue para él una «apertura» a los demás y al mundo, una apertura que, partiendo de los órganos del oído y de la palabra, involucraba toda su persona y su vida: por fin podía comunicar y, por tanto, relacionarse de modo nuevo.

Pero todos sabemos que la cerrazón del hombre, su aislamiento, no depende sólo de sus órganos sensoriales. Existe una cerrazón interior, que concierne al núcleo profundo de la persona, al que la Biblia llama el «corazón». Esto es lo que Jesús vino a «abrir», a liberar, para hacernos capaces de vivir en plenitud la relación con Dios y con los demás. Por eso decía que esta pequeña palabra, «Effetá» —«ábrete»— resume en sí toda la misión de Cristo. Él se hizo hombre para que el hombre, que por el pecado se volvió in-teriormente sordo y mudo, sea capaz de escuchar la voz de Dios, la voz del Amor que habla a su corazón, y de esta manera aprenda a su vez a hablar el lenguaje del amor, a comunicar con Dios y con los demás. Por este motivo la palabra y el gesto del «Effetá» han sido insertados en el rito del Bautismo, como uno de los signos que explican su significado: el sacerdote, tocando la boca y los oídos del recién bautizado, dice: «Effetá», orando para que pronto pueda escuchar la Palabra de Dios y profesar la fe. Por el Bautismo, la persona humana comienza, por decirlo así, a «respirar» el Espíritu Santo, aquel que Jesús había invocado del Padre con un profundo suspiro, para curar al sordomudo.

Nos dirigimos ahora en oración a María santísima, cuya Natividad celebramos ayer. Por su singular relación con el Verbo encarnado, María está plenamente «abierta» al amor del Señor; su corazón está constantemente en escucha de su Palabra. Que su maternal inter-cesión nos obtenga experimentar cada día, en la fe, el milagro del «Effetá», para vivir en comunión con Dios y con los hermanos.
