ÁNGELUS Plaza de San Pedro Domingo 1 de noviembre de 2015 Queridos hermanos y hermanas, ¡buenos días y buena fiesta! En la celebración de hoy, fiesta de Todos los santos, sentimos particularmente viva la realidad de la comunión de los santos, nuestra gran familia, formada por todos los miembros de la Iglesia, tanto los que somos todavía peregrinos en la tierra, como los que —muchos más— ya la han dejado y se han ido al Cielo. Estamos todos unidos, y esto se llama la «comunión de los santos», es decir, la comunidad de todos los bautizados. En la liturgia, el Libro del Apocalipsis refiere una característica esencial de los santos, y dice así: ellos son personas que pertenecen totalmente a Dios. Los presenta como una multitud inmensa de «elegidos», vestidos de blanco y marcados por el «sello de Dios» (cf. 7, 2-4.9-14). Mediante este último particular, con lenguaje alegórico se subraya que los santos pertenecen a Dios en modo pleno y exclusivo, son su propiedad. Y ¿qué significa llevar el sello de Dios en la propia vida y en la propia persona? Nos lo dice también el apóstol Juan: significa que en Jesucristo nos hemos convertido verdaderamente en hijos de Dios (cf. 1 Jn 3, 1 -3). ¿Somos conscientes de este gran don? ¡Todos somos hijos de Dios! ¿Recordamos que en el Bautismo hemos recibido el «sello» de nuestro Padre celestial y nos hemos convertido en sus hijos? Dicho de un modo sencillo: llevamos el apellido de Dios, nuestro apelli-do es Dios, porque somos hijos de Dios. ¡Aquí está la raíz de la vocación a la santidad! Y los santos que hoy recordamos son precisa-mente quienes han vivido en la gracia de su Bautismo, han conservado íntegro el «sello», comportándose como hijos de Dios, tratan-do de imitar a Jesús; y ahora han alcanzado la meta, porque finalmente «ven a Dios así como Él es». Una segunda característica propia de los santos es que son ejemplos para imitar. Pero, atención: no solamente los canonizados, sino también los santos, por así decir, «de la puerta de al lado» que, con la gracia de Dios, se han esforzado por practicar el Evangelio en su vida ordinaria. De estos santos hemos encontrado tantos también nosotros; quizás hemos tenido alguno en familia, o bien entre los amigos y los conocidos. Debemos estarles agradecidos, y sobre todo debemos dar gracias a Dios que nos los dio, que nos los puso cerca, como ejemplos vivos y contagiosos del modo de vivir y de morir en la fidelidad al Señor Jesús y a su Evangelio. ¡Cuánta gen-te buena hemos conocido y conocemos!, y decimos: «esta persona es un santo». Lo decimos, nos viene espontáneamente. Estos son los santos de la puerta de al lado, los que no están canonizados pero viven con nosotros. Imitar sus gestos de amor y de misericordia es un poco como perpetuar su presencia en este mundo. Y, en efecto, esos gestos evangé-licos son los únicos que resisten a la destrucción de la muerte: un acto de ternura, una ayuda generosa, un tiempo dedicado a escu-char, una visita, una palabra buena, una sonrisa… Ante nuestros ojos estos gestos pueden parecer insignificantes, pero a los ojos de Dios son eternos, porque el amor y la compasión son más fuertes que la muerte. Que la Virgen María, Reina de todos los santos, nos ayude a tener más confianza en la gracia de Dios, para caminar con impulso en el camino de la santidad.

ANGELUS Saint Peter's Square Sunday, 1st November 2015 Dear Brothers and Sisters, Good morning and Happy Feast Day! In today’s celebration, the Feast of All Saints, we experience in a special way the reality of the communion of saints, our great fami-ly that consists of all members of the Church, both those of us who are still pilgrims on earth, and the immense multitude of those who have already left and gone to Heaven. We are all united, and this is called the “communion of saints”, meaning the community of all baptized people. In today’s Liturgy, the Book of Revelation refers to an essential characteristic of saints, saying: they are people who belong totally to God. They are presented as an immense multitude of “chosen ones”, dressed in white and marked with the “seal of God” (cf. 7:2-4, 9-14). Through this last detail, with allegorical language, it is emphasized that the saints belong to God fully and exclusively, and that they are his property. What does it means to bear the seal of God in one’s very life and person? The Apostle John again tells us: it means that in Jesus Christ we have truly become children of God (cf. 1 Jn 3:1-3). Are we conscious of this great gift? We are all children of God! Do we remember that in Baptism we received the “seal” of our Heavenly Father, and that we became his children? To put it simply: we bear God’s surname, our surname is God, because we are the children of God. Here lies the root of the vocation to holiness! The saints whom we remember today are those who lived in the grace of their Baptism, those who kept the “seal” intact, behaving as children of God, seeking to emulate Jesus; and now they have reached the goal, because they finally “see God as he is”. A second characteristic of the saints is that they are examples to emulate. Let us note: not only those who are canonized, but the saints “next door”, so to speak, those who, by the grace of God, strive to practice the Gospel in their everyday lives. Among these saints we also find ourselves; perhaps someone in our family or among friends and acquaintances. We must be grateful for them, and above all we must be grateful to God who has given them to us, putting them close to us as living and contagious examples of the way to live and die in fidelity to the Lord Jesus and his Gospel. How many good people have we met and do we know, about whom we say: “This person is a saint!”. We say it, it comes to spontaneously. These are the saints next door, those who are not canonized but who live with us. Imitating their gestures of love and mercy is a bit like perpetuating their presence in this world. These evangelical gestures are in-deed the only ones that can withstand the destruction of death: an act of tenderness, generous aid, time spent listening, a visit, a kind word, a smile.... In our eyes these gestures might seem insignificant, but in the eyes of God they are eternal, because love and com-passion are stronger than death. May the Virgin Mary, Queen of All Saints, help us to trust more in the grace of God, and to walk with enthusiasm along the path of holiness.
