PASTOR POINTS

Dear Friends,

This is the last Sunday of Advent, and our time of prepara-tion for Christmas is reaching its conclusion. Are we ready? Jesus is hoping that we are. He has something he wants to tell us this Christmas, something he wants to give us, something wonderful he wants us to do. Just like Mary in today’s Gospel passage, Jesus has a message for you and me, and if we are ready for it, as Mary was ready, it will bring Christ into our lives and into the world in a new, life-changing way, just as the angel’s message brought Christ into Mary’s womb so long ago. But are we ready? How can we know if we are ready?

There are a few signs to gauge our readiness for the special grace of Christmas. It is not about having every item on our shopping list checked off. It is not about having our decora-tions up. And it is not by making sure that our Christmas cards have been sent. Those are good things, but secondary, exterior things. The real preparation for Christmas happens on the inside. That is where we find the signs.

The first sign of readiness is mentioned in the First Read-ing, where God makes a solemn promise to King David that a descendent of his will rule an everlasting Kingdom. Of course, that is a prophecy about Jesus, whose kingdom will have no end, as we pray each week in the Creed. But King David was only ready to hear that promise and receive that joy after, as the Bible tells us, he was settled in his palace and the Lord had given him rest from his enemies on every side. David’s house was in order, and his country was at peace, and so he was able to hear God’s Word. That is a symbol of our spiritual life. His palace, the place he lived, symbolizes our own souls, our interior lives. Are there still some evil, self-centered desires dominating our souls: vengeance, greed, lust, arrogance, un-forgiveness? Are there still some evil, sin-ful habits or patterns that dominate our activities: dishonesty, gossip, self-indulgence, infidelity, laziness? These tendencies and temptations can interfere with our ability to receive God’s joyful, peace-giving Word. It is not too late to settle in our palace and let the Lord give us rest from our enemies. The con-fessional is open from now until Christmas, and God gives this grace and mercy put our house in order.

We see another sign that we are ready for Christmas in today’s Second Reading. St. Paul is praising God for his myste-rious and wonderful plan of salvation, which was kept secret for long ages, but now has been proclaimed, revealed, and manifested through the prophetic writings. When we hold a Bible in our hands, we are holding these prophetic writings, this revelation of the mystery of God. But how often do we hold a Bible in our hands and open its pages to read, reflect, and meditate on these sacred, inspired words?

In today’s Gospel Mary gives us the perfect example of how we should to treat the sacred scriptures. When God’s messenger greeted her, St. Luke tells us that she pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The Bible is a message from God for our souls, and we too have to ponder what it might mean for us. We have to devout time each day to ponder his sacred Word, opening our hearts to him in prayerful reflection on the Bible.

Putting our house in order through the sacrament of con-fession and pondering the sacred scriptures, these are sure signs that we are ready for Christmas, sure signs that we are ready to receive God’s personal gift for each one of us on that holy day.

Ryncarz; John Orkish, husband of Patricia; John McCormick, husband of Anita and father of Zane; Joseph Kubik, husband of Marilyn; and Norma Hahn, mother of Jane (Andy) Antosz. May all our faithful departed rest in peace!

Thank you for your financial stewardship of our parish!

Our hearts are aglow with the joy of Christmas! Our senses are alive with the season, from the rich smells of evergreen and ginger-bread to the feel of crisp air on our skin and the warmth of a loved one’s embrace. At some point in the holiday hustle and bustle, take a few moments of quiet. In the silence, reflect on the other senses of the season. Imagine the cool damp of an ani-mal stable, the earthy smell of hay and feed, and the crisp night air blowing in softly. Imagine kneel-

ing beside an exhausted, joyful mother and a relieved, protective father. Imagine an infant wrapped in cloth scraps held out to your open arms. Imagine holding the infant Jesus. As his eyes meet yours, welcome into your heart the greatest gift of Christmas.

Engaged couples are invited to attend a Marriage Preparation Workshop on Sat-urday, March 20th from 9:00am–3:30pm in Marian Hall. This workshop will cover many marriage-related topics including: Communica-tion, Marriage as a Sacrament, Finances, Sexuality

and Natural Family Planning. At the close of the workshop, the couple’s engagement will be blessed, and they will receive a cer-tificate of completion. The workshop fulfills the diocesan re-quirements for Marriage Prep. Call Mike at the Parish Offices for more information.
