Saint Mary Parish
Come Lord Jesus, Come! Advent looks to the future. It looks toward Christmas, but even more, toward the coming of Christ again. Because Advent is about the future, it is also about hope.
Today, when we think about the future, it can be very depressing: global warming, terrorism, war, economic uncertainty, sickness, old age, death.
But the message of Advent is one of hope -- salvation is at hand! Justice will triumph. Peace will be established. The downtrodden will be raised up. How our world need justice, peace & hope!
There are plenty of signs of hope in our world. Think of the millions of people who try to make the world a better place with a smile, a kind word, and a helping hand. Think of the countless tender mercies shown to each of us by our Lord, pushing us forward, to hope on.
Advent is about the coming of the Lord. Will we let Him into our hearts and hands so that we continue His work of compassion and love, of justice and peace? This can only happen if we are open to hope, open to the Holy Spirit.
The Scripture readings during Advent are full of hope. They are an antidote to the cynicism and despair so prevalent in our age. Reading the daily Scripture readings is a wonderful way to nourish your spirit at any time of the year, but especially during this season of joyful expectation.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by
the power of the Holy Spirit. --Romans 15:13
First Sunday of Advent
In the days to come we’ll all be asked “Are you ready for Christmas? We know what that means – Do you have your gifts? Have you made your travel plans, Have you baked your goodies? And more. But we know what the question should mean deep within: Am I preparing to celebrate the birth of Christ, by deeper prayer, silence, reflection, reading, etc.? We contemplate the First Coming of Jesus as Savior, and anticipate his promised Second Coming. Below are a few practical ways we’ve taken and edited from federalist.com to observe the holiness of the season in our everyday lives: Pray More!
Attend devotions, or weekday Mass, if possible, pray the rosary, Angelus, etc. Add Sacred Music to Your Life
Get some CDs to play on the way to work, school, or elsewhere. Download Advent hymns to play quietly as you eat supper together. Have you heard the saying that “Repetition is the mother of all learning”? Maybe your family could switch your usual music choices to seasonal hymns and learn them together. Attend Advent Services
Attend a special Advent service, such as our Still Small Voice concert this Sunday at 3:30PM in our Church. (Afterwards, share the start of this holy season with fellow Parishioners at the reception in the Barn.)
Read an Advent Series as a Family
Look in the Bulletin for Advent recommendations from FORMED, our Parish’s free subscription to the best Catholic content. They also offer daily reflections at www.formed.org/advent. Remember Your Neighbors
Deliver a dish to a sick or elderly neighbor or sign up to make a meal for Dorothy Day Hospitality House (contact Meg Reilley, [email protected]). Reach out to those who may be alone in these holy days. Encourage Thankfulness
With the material overemphasis for Christmas, spend Advent paring down toys and clothes and share with those who don’t have enough. Pick an ornament off our Giving Tree and share your good fortune with those less fortunate.
Give Forgiveness a Try
Make a call, plan a visit, extend an olive branch. Let go of old hurts and resentments and offer them up for the glory of God and a fresh start this Christmas.
Wait to Start Christmas (and celebrate the 12 Days after).
Consider delaying the Christmas decorations until more toward the end of Advent. Decorating for Advent and waiting to pull out the Christmas items is a way to not rush Christmas or overlook Advent. It’s certainly counter-cultural!
We pray that this Advent will be a time of true spiritual awakening and renewal for you and your family as you prepare to celebrate the birth of the Savior of the World!

The holidays can be tough. The joy of Christmas can turn into a time of painful lonliness and emptiness for those who have
suffered a loss or who are going through a challenge. If you know of someone going through a difficult time, talk to one of our Stephen Ministry Leaders, Mary Ann O’Grady – 203-438-5610 or Jack Hughes – 203-665-0054. Our Stephen Ministers are ready to provide focused, confidential, one-to-one Christian care. They help bring the healing power of Christ’s love.

“Let Me Run” Thanks to an amazing group of parent organizers, we were delighted to offer a Grade 3 "Let Me Run" club this fall. Let Me Run inspires boys through the power of running to be courageous enough to be themselves, to build healthy relationships, and to live an active lifestyle. Our runners met twice a week to train, and culminated by participating in the “Cops and Robbers” 5K right here in Ridgefield.
Saint Mary School is currently accepting applications for the 2020-2021 school year. For more information, or to set up a tour, please contact Anna O’Rourke at (203) 438-7288, or visit www.smsridgefield.org.

FAITH FORMATION CORNER Vigilance & Preparation
“Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come.” Matthew 24:42 “Be watchful! Be alert!” Mark 13:33a “Be vigilant at all times and pray.” Luke 21:36a
Advent begins with a call to vigilance and preparation. Imagine if Christmas morning came and you woke up suddenly realizing that you forgot to prepare! You had no gifts, no food purchased and no plans were made. Of course, you wouldn’t allow that to happen, but we do sometimes allow it to happen spiritually speaking. We often are not prepared to celebrate the birth of Christ within our hearts.
The first week of Advent also offers the focus of the Second Coming of Christ. Jesus will return again, in all splendor and glory, to judge the living and the dead. We profess that fact every Sunday in our Creed. So, even though Advent is a time for the preparation of the celebration of the first coming of Jesus in the flesh, it is also a time to acknowledge that His first coming is ultimately fulfilled in His final glorious coming.
As Advent begins, reflect upon how ready you are for Jesus’ coming. Are you preparing for it with the same fervor that you prepare for Christmas through shopping, cooking, decorating, etc? Are you looking forward to that day when He will return? Are you preparing for the spiritual celebration of His birth? Are you awake and attentive to the numerous ways that God speaks to you on a daily basis? If you find that you are not as prepared for His return in glory as you’d like to be, make this Advent a time when you get your heart ready. Commit to prayer, spiritual exercises, reflection and attentiveness to His gentle and glorious voice. mycatholiclife.com
