The “golden keys” for a happy marriage “Your obligation to one another can be summed up in one simple statement: “Your duty is to help each other get to heaven,”. The husband fulfills this obligation by being the “moral authority” in the home, part of which means calling “your wife to prayer and to gentle obedience to the holy precepts and commandments of God.” The wife fulfills this obligation by being the “love authority” of the union. “You must teach your husband the mysteries of God’s love, because it is the woman’s heart which intuitively understands this mystery far more naturally than a man.” Encourage each other to grow in God’s wisdom to grow in holiness. While husband and wife are called to become “one flesh,” this means more than bodily union, but a union of “mind and heart.” This principle is “extremely important” when it comes to making decisions. “When the two of you agree about anything, the Holy Spirit has inspired that agreement and you can confidently proceed with your decision. But what if you do not agree? What then?” “Well, the Holy Spirit is still active, but he is waiting to see which one of you will give up his or her opinion and humbly submit to the opinion of the other – an act of true love, “. “So, what does it mean to love one another? It means self-sacrifice and self-donation. It means giving yourself to the other with no conditions, no strings attached and even where this incurs suffering,”. “Some couples have the attitude of ‘I will love you so long as you love me.’ That is the wrong sentiment. The true Christian stance should be ‘I will love you always, even if you do not love me back.’ It is an immutable fact, and you can totally trust in that.” “Other couples say, ‘I will love you as long as you meet my needs.’ Well, that is hardly love at all. “Love means serving one another. And, to do that well it means exploring each other as persons, discovering what makes your spouse happy and content, knowing what makes him or her unhappy or sad or even irritable and then setting about the holy task of serving with your special talents. Do everything for your spouse which is pleasing and as much as you can avoid that which is displeasing,” he added. A test of true love is a “willingness to lay down your life for your wife or husband,” which could happen in two ways. “The first way is in the day-to-day routine of life, dying to self for the sake of the other in all kinds of little ways, giving up your immediate needs in the interest of your life-long spouse,”. “The second way is to actually risk and even lose your life in order to save the other. The first way is the white martyrdom of day-to-day living. The second way is the red martyrdom, which guarantees instant entry into heaven,”. Jesus gives you his blessed mother to protect you, to wrap her mantle of motherly love around you and to intercede for you with her Son. The “golden keys” for a happy marriage. Know that your love will endure and deepen as time goes by, if you build your marriage on the Catholic faith, on the sacrifice of the Mass and on the Holy Eucharist and on the rosary and on the virtues. These are the golden keys to your journey together to paradise,”. So, make it your goal in life to do whatever Jesus tells you, and God’s grace will be a never-ending source of strength to you both.”

Fr. James Narithookil, CMI—Parochial Administrator TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Although our Puritan forebears at Plymouth Rock were almost a hundred years removed from their Catholic roots, the old liturgical calendar still had an unconscious claim on their hearts. We’ve already seen how on Saint Martin’s Day, No-vember 11, medieval continental Europe observed a great harvest day of Thanksgiving, with games, dances, parades, and a festive dinner of roast goose. With the goose went ample draughts of “Saint Martin’s Wine,” the first wine of the new har-vest. Martinmas celebrated full barns and larders stocked for the winter. Even after the Reformation, the tradition of eating goose on Saint Martin’s Day was retained in Holland, and it was there that our Pilgrims encountered this tradition. When Governor Bradford sent four hunters out into the Massachusetts wilderness in the autumn of 1621, they did indeed find some geese and ducks, and were persuaded by the indigenous people to try turkey, too. Just as the liturgical calendar has been tweaked over the years, President Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving to the third Thursday in November in 1939, probably to extend the Christmas shopping season. The protest was so great that in 1941 the day established by President Lincoln, the last Thursday in November, was restored. If the Pilgrims had known of the Martinmas connection, they might never have celebrated at all! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

THANKSGIVING REPORT TO PARISHIONERS

Annual Catholic Appeal 2018 “Report of Gratitude” This Thanksgiving, as we reflect with gratitude for the many blessings God has given us, Catholics throughout the Diocese are invited to view the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal “Report of Gratitude.” By coming together as Catholics, see how parishioners have helped social service agencies in Northern California to provide hope and help to our brothers and sisters in need. More than 253,000 individuals and families, through love and care inspired by Jesus Christ, moved closer to independence and dignity. Take a moment to see the difference you’ve made this year. Visit scd.org/annual-catholic-appeal. The 2018 Appeal is approaching $3.7 million in commit-ments so far. If you have not yet participated, prayerfully consider a donation. No contribution, no act of charity is ever too small or insignificant. Envelopes are available here at the parish, or donate online at scd.org.

“The Four Last Things” Tues. November 27 @ 7:00 p.m. St. Mary Funeral Center, 6509 Fruitridge Road, Sacramento “God created man for incorruption and made him in the image of his own eternity, but through the devil’s envy death entered the world.” - Wisdom 2:23-24 Inspired though we are through hope in the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, death remains shrouded in mystery. For unbelievers death is simply the end, but as Christians we believe that in death life is changed, not ended. In this talk we will take an unflinching look at the four last things: death, judgment, heaven and hell – something everyone, believers and unbelievers alike, will have to face someday. Speaker: James Cavanagh, Director, Office of Worship. Free. Register here: https://scd.formstack.com/forms/four_last_things or call 916-733-0221

CHRIST IS KING On the final Sunday of the liturgical year we cele-brate the feast of Christ the King. It’s easy to understand today’s scriptures as events that happened long ago and far away, or predictions that will come true somewhere, some day. But they invite us to claim Christ as our King here and now. Jesus’ words to Pilate in the Gospel remind us that his kingdom transcends time and place. And the prophecies from Daniel and Revelation give us reason to be faithful to Christ our King right here and right now. By concluding the year with this feast we are pro-claiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the one and only King over all seasons, all peoples, and all of creation. No matter what nation we belong to or what language we speak, he “has made us into a kingdom” (Revelation 1:6)—one people united in love and peace for all eternity. Copyright © J. S. St. Mary School is now accepting applications for the 2019-2020 School Year! St. Mary School offers a preschool to 8th grade curriculum. We invite you to contact us for more information or to schedule a tour, (916) 452-1100. For your convenience, a brochure on our application process is available in the vestibule. Why Catholic School? Many parents ask why they should send their children to a Catholic School. A Catholic School provides a faith-filled, family community environment where children are given the opportunity to receive instruction in their faith throughout each day. High academic standards, Virtue education, and the development of the whole child allows students to grow spiritually, soundly, emotionally, and academically. It’s the Catholic School Advantage! CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK begins Sunday, January 27th with Family Mass at 9:30 a.m., followed by OPEN HOUSE from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon. This is a great time to show off the great things we offer at St. Mary School. During Open House, our parents will be serving breakfast in the hall. Our annual Scholastic Book Fair will be in the Library for an entire week so don’t miss it. We look forward to seeing you there!

Altar Servers Needed Calling all parish students interested in altar serving: Are you an entering fifth grader or older? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to altar serve for Mass? Are you looking for a way to serve YOUR parish? We would like to invite you to become an altar server! Training will be provided in September. St. Mary School students will have training during school. Students from other schools will have training on an evening or weekend. Please contact Ava Conlin at 760-809-7932 (call or text) or [email protected] to sign up or to have any of your questions answered. Thank you and God Bless!

VOCATION CROSS SIGN UP Each week, a parish family is invited to take home a Vocation Cross to display in their home for the entire week, to pray that men and women will open their hearts to become priests, sisters, brothers, or deacons. The cross is presented at the Sunday 9:30AM Mass. The family is asked to gather around the cross each day during that week to offer the vocation prayer which will be included with the cross. Families can make a special place for the cross in their home. Perhaps you can add a candle near the cross or add other touches to make that place special. Then the cross is brought back to church on the following Sunday so that another family can take the cross home. We encourage all of you to pray daily for vocations. Jesus Himself said: “Ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for His harvest.” (Mt. 9:38) To sign up to take home the Vocation Cross, visit http://signup.com/go/LtCmdpE or you may leave a message at 916.956.9646 and tell us which week(s) you’d like to sign up for.
