101 Questions about the Catholic Mass (continued)

23) Is the presence of the Tabernacle important; and if so, where is it usually located and how do we acknowledge its presence? Yes, the Tabernacle is of great importance because it is the “house” of the Eucharist Who is Christ. The tabernacle must be present either in the sanctuary of the church, or in an attached chapel. The tabernacle is located in a place that is “truly noble, prominent, readily visible, beautifully decorated and suitable for prayer” Because Christ is truly present in the tabernacle, it is customary to genuflect in reverence toward the Tabernacle in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament when entering and leaving the church or chapel, and to direct our prayers toward Christ in the Tabernacle in general. 24) What is the significance of the colored candles and wreath present around Christmas time? During advent, the four-week season to prepare for Christmas, some churches place special candles around an Advent wreath. Each week another candle is lit. Three candles are purple to denote the solemn preparation period before Jesus’ Birth. On the third Sunday of Advent, the pink candle is lit. This day is for rejoicing that the Birth of Jesus is near. The white candle in the middle is lit on Christmas Day, when the Light of the World is born. The Christmas season also frequently included a Nativity scene, with poinsettias and Christmas trees to decorate the altar area. 25) What is the purpose of the 14 pictures or images along the sidewalls of the church? These are the Stations of the Cross where people can stop to pray along the way of Jesus’ Passion and Death, meditating on the various stages that are recounted in the gospels. The Stations are prayed especially during Lent. 26) What special things are included in the Liturgy during holy Week and Easter? The period of Holy Week and the Triduum of Holy Thursday through Holy Saturday is a very special time. The Liturgy of the Mass has special place for blessed palm branches that resemble the scene of the triumphant entry of Christ into Jerusalem, the Cross that resembles the Crucifixion of Christ, Lilies that resemble the trumpets to announce the Resurrection, and perhaps a statue or depiction of the risen Lord or empty tomb. When present, these added symbols assist the faithful during Mass to reflect upon the central mystery of our Faith – the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ. 27) What is the purpose of the pool or large bowl of water located inside churches? This pool or large bowl is called the Baptismal Font or Pool. It is used for baptisms and is present at other times to remind us of our Baptism in Christ and our baptismal vows and new life in Christ. Fr. James Narithookil, CMI - Pastor

DIOCESE OF SACRAMENTO Office of Worship Flu season is here. If you are sick, or think you might be sick, or are concerned about contracting an illness, you should refrain from receiving the Blood of Christ. Be assured that “since Christ is sacramentally present under each of the species, communion under the species of bread alone makes it possible to receive all the fruit of Eucharistic Grace.” [Catechism, 1390]

DON’T BE ANXIOUS People have, it seems, a natural penchant for misplaced em-phasis on unimportant things. They can easily get caught up with what they’re having for dinner or what they will wear. Often it is a tragedy that helps people to refocus on what is really important. What I shall wear is an irrelevant question when I am facing surgery or chemotherapy. What’s for din-ner is immaterial to those living through grief or unemploy-ment. In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us not to worry. He doesn’t say, “Don’t eat. Don’t cook. Don’t buy clothes.” He says, “Don’t worry.” Jesus asks us not to relinquish our re-sponsibilities but to let go of our anxiety. Anxiety betrays a lack of trust and Jesus reminds us that “Your heavenly Father knows” all that you need (Matthew 6:32). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

CENTERING PRAYER GROUP “Be still before the Lord” Psalm 37:7 Contemplative prayer is a process of interior Transformation, a conversation initiated by God leading to divine union. We have a group, practicing this form of prayer that meets every Wednesday morning in the Holy Spouses Room from 9:30am to 11:00am. Centering Prayer begins at 10:00am following a brief reading from works written by Thomas Keating a Cistercian monk and founder of the Centering Prayer Movement. We read the Gospel for the following Sunday, sing an Alleluia and pray petitions too. For more information, please contact Maxine Jennings at 916-383-1142

seeks after us. He comes to meet us and beckons us to follow him. He calls us to be his disciples, to trust him, to open ourselves to his merciful love, and to love others as he has loved us. Follow Me invites you to experience the joy of a renewed friendship with Christ. The Introduction for this study begins February 15th, and continues on Wednesdays from 7-8:30 for 8 weeks. The 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal is our annual tradition that connects us to thou-sands of people who need our help every day. Our generous gifts to the Appeal help children find safety and hope, help families break through desperate situations, marginalized individuals find the strength to rebuild lives

of dignity, students in economically challenged communi-ties remain in Catholic school, and seminarians prepare for priestly service in our parishes. We may not be social workers or teachers ourselves, but we can put resources into the hands of those Catholic social service programs and parish outreach ministries that help lift people out of poverty by giving to the Annual Catholic Appeal. Please be as generous as you can. Every gift makes a difference.

HOLY HOUR—March 2 Holy Hour Devotion is the Roman Catholic Tradition of spending One Hour in Eucharistic Adoration in the Presence of the Blessed Sacrament. In 1673 Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque stated that she had a vision of Jesus in which she was instructed to spend an hour every Thursday night to meditate on the sufferings of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. This practice later became widespread among Roman Catholics. The inspiration for the Holy Hour comes from Matthew 26:40. In the Gospel of Matthew, during the agony in the Garden of Gethsemane the night before his crucifixion, Jesus spoke to his disciples, saying "My soul is sorrowful even to death. Remain here and keep watch with me. In keeping with this tradition, St Mary offers a Holy Hour every first Thursday of the month. You are welcome to come and adore or you may simply lay your cares at the feet of Jesus. Adoration begins promptly at 7pm. If you come late, please enter in silence and sit in back of church so as not to disturb those in silent adoration. Praise be Jesus! Now and Forever!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION By the early 1950s some scholars were calling for the restoration of Communion of the faithful on Good Friday, since by then only a priest received, consuming the host from the Holy Thursday repository. In 1955 the new Good Friday liturgy was timed to begin at three o’clock everywhere, and included the option of Holy Commun-ion, but without the Precious Blood that had originally been part of the liturgy. Today, there is increasing debate among theologians. Some feel that it would be better to fast from the Eucharist on Good Friday, focusing on the mystery of the cross and highlighting the Easter Com-munion. Others say that this Communion infuses the sad-ness of the day with awareness of Christ’s victory. It is not a day of mourning, of course, and the Passion accord-ing to John grounds the liturgy in a sense of Christ’s vic-tory over death and the triumph of the cross. The tradition is rich and varied, and we are still in the early stages of recovering an ancient way of doing things. Why do we call the day “good”? The English and Dutch languages share this name, and its origin stems from the name “God’s Friday.” The traditional name for the day in Latin is Feria VI in Parasceve, which translates as “The Sixth Day of the Week of Preparation.” Other languages make do with “Holy Friday.” In another part of England, as in Denmark, the people used to call it “Long Friday,” a good description for a quiet day without work and no chance for play or a good meal! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
