RCIA – TAKING A LOOK AT THE NEW TESTAMENT SCRIPTURES

This Wednesday evening, our RCIA seekers, sponsors, and their catechists will be taking a look into the Scriptures of the New Testament – the Gospels and letters left to us by the followers of Jesus from the earliest years of the Church’s history. Once again, the origins, authors, processes, and influences resulting in the development and even-tual writing of the letters and books of the New Testament will be reviewed and discussed. The group will take a closer look at how the various needs of the early Christian community led to the stories and writings we are most familiar with – and investigate the timing of the writings, as well as the influence of earlier writings on those that came later. Did you know?

According to Scripture scholars, Matthew was writing for a largely Jewish audience; Mark was writing to a Gentile community in Rome; Luke was writing for a Greek Gentile audience; John’s gospel was intended for all.

The longest book in the New Testament in the Acts of the Apostles Who is credited as author of the Letter of Jude is still a debate among scholars; some suggest the author

is Thaddeus, one of the Twelve Disciples, while others suggest that Jude was a relative of Jesus who traveled with him throughout his ministry, but who doubted Jesus’ claims as Son of Man.

Our seekers, sponsors, and catechists wish everyone a prayerful and joy-filled Advent – Happy Gift Sunday!

SHARING HANDS 2016 CHRISTMAS FOOD BASKET

PROGRAM Each year the Sharing Hands ministry provides a Christmas food basket and gifts to a number of needy families in our area. This year approximately 100 families have

been signed up for this special program. The gifts for the families are acquired through the ‘Gift Sunday’ pro-gram, but we also need adopting families to donate food baskets for these families. If you are interested in providing food for one of these families in our community, please sign up on the forms in the red folder located on the reception table in the narthex. You will be contacted via letter with the details of the family, suggestions for food items, and drop off details. The client families will pick up their gifts and food baskets on Saturday, December 10, at the Parish Center from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. All the donated food bas-kets need to be dropped off that morning, December 10, between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. prior to the recipient family arrivals. Please indicate on the form the size of the family for which you would like to shop. Food certificates (Jewel, Garden Fresh, Mariano’s) along with your food choices will help supplement future needs as well. All groceries must be contained in either a box or basket and labeled with the family’s ID # (which will be noted in your letter) to avoid any mix-ups. If you have questions or need further information, call Frank Ruder at 847-362-9509. Thank you in advance for your generosity in helping to provide a better Christmas for the less fortunate in our area.

Tree lot is open weekends from 10 am to 8 pm; and weeknights from 6 pm to 9 pm.

DIVORCE SUPPORT GROUPS The Archdiocese of Chicago provides divorce support groups at various parishes. The purpose of these groups is to pro-vide pastoral care to Catholics and non-Catholics who have been affected by divorce with the hope to overcome the grieving process in a healthy way. The approach of pastoral care may vary by parish. Each group adapts the format that best meets the need of its partici-pants. Some of the programs that are frequently used at parishes are Divorce and Beyond, Divorce Care, Catholic Di-vorce Survival Guide and Twelve Steps Recovery. The meetings may vary from once a week for a period of time until continuous monthly meetings. To obtain details or information on group locations and parish contacts, please call Maryvel Torres at 312-534-8353 or [email protected]. (Closest locations to St. Mary of Vernon are St. James in Arlington Heights, St. Mary of the Annunciation in Mundelein, Prince of Peace in Lake Villa—but there are other locations throughout the Chicagoland area.)

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Did St. Francis of Assisi invent the Christmas crib? Not exactly, but his devotion to the Incarnation and his love for the poverty of the Christ Child certainly popularized this beloved custom. Long before Francis, it was a custom at the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome to enshrine a rich image of Mary, gilded and bejewelled, embracing the child Jesus. This church was founded as a kind of home for the feast of Christmas in the fourth century. In 1223, Francis was ready to cele-brate this feast in a new way. In the tiny city of Greccio, he asked friends to prepare a place where they could experience the poverty and suffering embraced by Christ in his birth. It was a living scene: an ox from the barn, an ass from the stable, and peasants standing in for shepherds and kings. The night of the celebration was beautiful, the weather was warm, and people came in crowds, bearing candles and singing hymns that echoed through the forest. Francis himself chanted the Gospel and preached. The custom spread quickly, and by the sixteenth century cribs were seasonal features not only in church, but in the home. On December 17, the liturgy begins to unfold the Lord’s birth before us, and it’s the right time to follow this beautiful tradition. In Germany, each night throughout Advent children prepare a bedding for the manger. At bedtime prayer, a child places a single straw in the manger for each act of devotion or virtue performed during the day. If the children are good, then the Christ child will have plenty of soft bedding when he is placed in the manger on Christmas. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

PREPARE THE WAY Saint John the Baptist appears on the scene today as Advent enters its sec-ond week. The mysterious consumer of locusts and wild honey, John ech-oes the words of the prophet Isaiah as he calls for repentance in the face of the nearness of the kingdom of heav-en. The rhythms of the Christian life are often confounding. Each year we meet the Baptist and hear his calls for repentance. Each year we see him pointing to the one who is coming after him, the Lord Jesus. Yet each year the words and actions of John the Baptist echo anew in our hearts, because we have fallen into old sin-ful traps again and again. Advent gives us the opportunity once again to turn away from our sinful ways and embrace the gospel way of life. John the Baptist invites us to prepare the way for the Lord, in whom we place our hope. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
