Dear parish family, 19th Sunday C

We have a successful VBS for children this week. We greatly appreciate the volunteer teachers and helpers, and those who share their financial and material assistance. Our special Thanks to Shari, Desiree, Graciela and others, and of course, all the parents for their cooperation and participation. Indeed the kids learn the rudiments of faith through fun and games. Faith is a big theme this Sunday. The epistle to the Hebrews of this Sunday’s second reading says, “Faith is the realization of what is hope for and the evidence of things not seen.” Indeed, faith is such a power in life that St. Augustine said, “a man without faith is like a tree without roots.” A faith which is not practiced or acted upon can die. So our Lord pointed out the parable of the servants in the gospel today. The servant who keeps himself vigilant waiting for his Master’s return was rewarded. This is what the Lord wants all of us who already have faith in Him - to be vigilant in the practice of our faith. We grow in faith only if we nurture our faith, we move forward in faith only in walking in faith, we become strong in faith only in holding on to it no matter what the circumstances are. Jesus warns us, “Get purses for yourselves that do not wear out, where no thief can reach nor do moths destroy. For where your treasure is, there your heart will also be.” This goes with the saying, “everything that pleases are but for a moment, everything that troubles are also for a moment, nothing therefore that is more important save that last forever.” That’s why we are here, Sunday after Sunday, that we be nourished in our faith by the Words of God we hear and by the Eucharist we receive at the table of the Lord, knowing that whether there be good times or bad times, we are armed with faith that sustains us and help us to carry through life till we reach our final destiny which is heaven. Our perfect model of reaching to our final destination is no other that the Mother of our Lord, who was assumed body and soul to heaven. Her feast day of the Assumption to heaven is this Thursday, August 15. It is a Holy Day of obligation for us Catholics. Please take your time to honor our church patron to be with Jesus through Mary by going to Mass that day.

Blessings to all and have a good week! Fr. Tony Querida familia parroquial, 19º domingo C

Fr. Tony
