The Health Profes- sions Simulation Labs allow resident physicians to work through realis- tic problems in a hospi- tal-like setting and prob- lem solve. This is the second visit to HPSL for resident phy- sicians from the Emer- gency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Med- icine, Transitional Year and Traditional Osteo- pathic Rotating Intern- ship programs. “The simulation labs at Schoolcraft College are amazing and provide a well-rounded list of tech- nical opportunities our Graduate Medical Edu- cation program needs for resident physician train- ing,” said Internal Med- icine Program Director James Kruer, M.D,. Grad- uate Medical Education, St. Mary Mercy Hospi- tal. “This medical simula- tion-based training allows our resident physicians to apply ‘real-life’ medical practice and knowledge in a safe virtual environ- ment before they even see a patient with that condition.” Opened in spring 2011, the HPSL were original- ly designed for School- craft College nursing students. With state-of- the-art technology and Advanced Life Support- designed drills, the labs are also used regularly by EMT and paramedics in training, care groups, K-12 students, contract training and Schoolcraft College continuing educa- tion students. “We truly appreciate having School- craft College’s partner- ship in helping us train the next generation of physicians,” said Susan Greenwood-Clark, direc- tor, St. Mary Mercy Grad- uate Medical Education. HPSL features include: • High-fidelity mani- kins that mimic human behavior (i.e. crying, hearing, pulse) during rapid response simulation scenarios. • Simulation rooms with the ability to capture audio and video, which can be reviewed in the debrief area. • Mini-stations set up to teach proper techniques to place a central venous catheter, nasogastric intubation and orotrache- al intubations. • A LAP VR® laparo- scopic trainer that allows haptic-controlled proce- dure practice for cutting, suturing, needle-driving and knot tying. Trainees can view recorded post- procedure data. • A heart and lung box allowing for listening and familiarizing with dif- ferent heart and lung sounds. “The emergency situa- tions that are simulated in our labs are scenarios our community might ulti- mately find themselves in a hospital for,” explained William Dunbar, Dean of Occupational Programs & Economic Develop- ment, Schoolcraft Col- lege. “By enhancing the training opportunities for our local health care pro- viders, they are better prepared to handle these emergencies or other standard procedures.” The community is invit- ed to tour the simulation labs.
