Word of Life
Our relationships on earth are meant to help us and others grow in perfect love. We are meant
to depend on one another, serve each other in humility, and walk together in times of suffering.
- USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities Respect Life Program P. 2
Last Sunday, we began reading from
the section of Matthew’s gospel called
the Sermon on the Mount. On the
mountain, Jesus handed his disciples
and followers new laws and ways of
Christian living. This parallels the way
Moses gave the Ten Commandments
to the Israelites on Mount Sinai.
In today’s gospel, Christ described his disciples as salt of
the earth and light of the world. Salt is a highly valued
commodity among all peoples. In the time of Christ, salt
was connected with purity because of its whiteness. It was
also a preservative and it lends flavor to food. By the same
token, the Christian is called to be pure and holy. As salt
is used to preserve meat and food items at the time of
Christ, so is the Christian called to preserve and keep the
world from moral and spiritual decay. The Christian is
also to sweeten or add flavor to the community in which
they live. They are to put smiles in the faces of people
around them with the message that Jesus loves and cares
for them.
Light is such an eloquent symbol that all the world's
religious traditions have appealed to it. The psalmist says
that the just man is a light in darkness to the upright
(Psalm 111). Jesus described himself as the light of the
World: “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the
world” (John 9:5). By saying “You are the light of the
world” in today’s gospel, Jesus wants us to be what he is
to the world. A light is meant to be seen. For it to be light,
it has to be visible. Therefore, the Christian must be
visible not just in the church but in society in general. As
William Barclay says, “our Christianity should be visible
in the way we treat a shop assistant across the counter, in
the way we order a meal in a restaurant, in the way we
treat our employees or serve our employer, in the way we
play a game, or drive, or park a motor car, in the daily lan-
guage we use, in the daily literature we read.” Light helps
us to see, it guides our steps. We, as light of the world are
meant to guide others in the paths that lead to life. We
must give good examples to others. Edith Wharton says
“there are two ways of spreading light; to be a candle, or
the mirror that reflects it”. Christ is the light of the world,
he is the candle. We are called to mirror and reflect Christ
so that others can see. The magnificent light that has been
entrusted to us, bringing us life and hope, must not be 'put
under a tub'.
St Paul, the great missionary, who witnessed to Christ in
an extraordinary way, discovered that it was not by
brilliant oratory that people were led to Christ. Instead, the
'power of the Spirit' was made manifest through the
sincerity of his simple faith in 'the crucified Christ'. And
so, while Jesus tells us that we must be evangelizers, he
also gives us practical advice as to how we are to give our
'witness' to the Good News he brought. Our light should
'shine', first and foremost, through the 'good works' that
make it clear that we are true offspring of our 'Father in
heaven'. The quality of true Christian lives can change the
world.
Thank you for your support of our parish school, St. Mary
Magdalene Catholic School. The Open House event went
well last week and so were the events for the Catholic
School Week. Please let your friends and neighbors who
may be considering enrolling their children, PreK3-8
know about our school. Step for students 5K run is less
than two weeks away, February 18th to be precise. It will
all begin with a sunrise Mass at 6:30am at the
Co-Cathedral of Sacred Heart in Downtown Houston.
The race will start after the Mass and I am preparing to
run to support our school. Your support for me is a direct
support for our St. Mary Magdalene Catholic School.
Please visit my Steps for Students’ page http://
bit.ly/2jogTqM to make your donations.
Next Sunday, we will make a pew appeal for the 2017
Diocesan Services Funds (DSF). You should have re-
ceived your materials for the program already in the mail.
The theme for this year is “Go Make Disciples!” The DSF
provide support for over 60 programs which benefit many
in the archdiocese. Our parish goal is $165,000.00. Let me
take this moment to thank our 424 families that contribut-
ed to the 2016 DSF parish goal. I hope that many more
parish families will assist Cardinal DiNardo to continue to
meet the needs of the over 60 programs that these funds
support.

What is Steps for Students? Steps for Students is an annual archdiocesan-wide event where all school and parish communities and business and community partners come together as one to support Catholic education. The goal of Steps for Students is
to raise awareness of Catholic education.
Why do our neighbors, families, schools, parishes and sponsors participate in Steps for Students? Because they realize that Catholic schools are making a difference in the lives of our students and in our community. By registering to run and joining a team you can designate your registration fee and any pledges you collect to benefit St. Mary Magdalene Catholic School, or… you can help sponsor Father Felix! That’s right! Father Felix will be again participating in this year’s event. All you have to do is go to http://bit.ly/2jogTqM or http://steps4students.racepartner.com/Fundraising16/FrFelix, and you can become a very valuable part of this incredible opportunity! Want to join in on the fun? Just visit the school’s website at: https://smmcs.org/steps-4-students.
SMMCS thanks you for all your support and kindness!

Breaking Open the Word for Families
Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Reading 1: Isaiah 58:7-10
Share your bread with the hungry. Clothe the
naked. Shelter the homeless. Satisfy the afflicted.
Then your light shall break forth like the dawn. Isaiah gives us the Corporal Works of Mercy with
the promise that for those who follow this way,
“your wound shall quickly be healed” and “you shall
call, and the Lord will answer”.
Reading 2: 1 Corinthians 2:1-5
Know nothing but Jesus Christ, and Him cruci-
fied. Your faith (should) rest not on human wis-
dom, but on the power of God. St. Paul humbly
insists that sublime words of wisdom do not come
from him, but from the Spirit of God – source of
power and wisdom, and the giver of every good gift.
Gospel: Matthew 5:13-16
You are light for the world. You are salt of the
Earth. Jesus tells us that “your light must shine
before others, that they may see your good deeds and
glorify your Heavenly Father.” As in the First
Reading, we see that good works cause us to shine
before God and others.
Let us be useful and add our good works to enhance
the lives of others, as salt enhances food; then we
shall preserve our life in the world to come, as salt
preserves food.

Appearances of Our Lady:
On February 11, 1858, Bernadette Soubirous,
a French peasant girl, saw a beautiful young
lady appear to her, dressed in white with a
blue sash and a yellow rose upon each foot.
The beautiful girl was holding a rosary of
ivory and gold. Bernadette fell to her knees and began to pray
her rosary as well. Mary appeared to Bernadette sixteen times
between February 11 and March 25, 1858. Bernadette was
instructed to dig for water and then to drink from the muddy
waters and bathe in them; for penance, she was told to eat the
bitter herb that grew there. The muddy waters immediately ran
clear and began to heal some who sought healing. Since that
day, March 25, 1858, at least 69 miraculous cures have been
granted. When asked her name, Mary revealed: “I am the Im-
maculate Conception”, a dogma which had been promulgated
by Pope Pius IX barely three years before. Mary’s message for
the world: “Penance, penance, penance!”
Name: Our Lady of Lourdes; The Immaculate Conception
Where: Lourdes France
When: February 11, 1858
Appeared To: Bernadette Soubirous
Known For: Heavenly confirmation of the dogma of Mary’s
Immaculate Conception (sinless from her conception);
miraculous healing.
Feast Day: February 11
Mary has been coming to her Son’s flock to speak urgently to
us of the need for prayer and conversion. Are we listening?

a ver, guía nuestros pasos.
Edith Wharton dice que "hay dos formas de difundir la luz;
Estamos llamados a reflejar y
