The first three, having to do with our right relationship to God, get the most ink. The one we busy people probably have the most problem with is keeping holy the Sabbath. If we take this commandment literally, babies will go undiapered and dishes will stay on the table, or perhaps meals will not be served. The sick will go unattended and nothing that has anything to do with physical labor will be done. Is mental labor really work? How about changing that dirty diaper (poor baby!)? We need to depend on God to discern how to observe real Sabbath time in our lives. The point of this commandment is that God has given us a great gift: one whole day per week when we are free to rest, worship God, sing, feast, love, and rejoice. As Psalm 19 proclaims: “The law of the LORD is perfect, / refreshing the soul” (19:8). Our Sabbath rest is a great gift, to be received from God with joy, not with nitpicking. Copyright © J. S. 3rd Sunday of Lent March 4, 2018

I, the LORD, am your God . . .You shall not have other gods besides me. — Exodus 20:2a, 3

“Among the many blessings that God has showered upon us in Christ is the blessing of marriage, a gift bestowed by the Creator from the creation of the human race… It is a source of blessing to the couple, to their families, and to society and includes the wondrous gift of co-creating human life. Indeed, as Pope John Paul II never tired of reminding us, the future of humanity depends on marriage and the family."– U.S. Catholic Bishops, 2009 Pastoral Letter: Marriage: Love and Life in the Divine Plan

help defray the added expenses that are incurred for the flowers and decorations of Holy Week and Easter Sunday. Please put your donation into any collection during March.

CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES COLLECTION Next WEEKEND (March 10/11) the 2nd Collection will be for Catholic Relief Services (CRS). Your donations are providing educational opportunities for refugee children including catch-up and remedial classes. FOSTERING STEWARDSHIP

Prayer to Saint Michael, the Archangel St. Michael, Archangel defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

CELEBRATING CATHOLIC FAMILIES Living the Word

3rd Sunday of Lent We are nearing the midpoint of Lent. Depending on where you live, signs of spring may be appearing. Bring this to your prayer space. Some possibilities include a budding branch (forsythia or pussy willow are good choices), or a bowl of water (keep it clean and fresh each day). Consider who is “the other” for you and your family. Perhaps do a little research on this group of people, or if possible, find a way to meet and talk together.

CHILDREN’S CORNER MARCH: Month of LENT. Prayer Center Theme is: Jesus, you sacrificed your life to save us. During Lent, I will sacrifice by…. Put written intentions in prayer pig; they will be offered up at all Sunday Masses once a month.

Dear St. Mary Magdalen Parishioners, Thank you for your support and generosity in helping me complete my Eagle Scout Service Project. My Eagle Scout Project was a success and I was able to donate over 500 pairs of prescription eyeglasses to University Park Lions Club. The donated eye glasses will allow them to help improve the quality of life for children and adults living in low and middle income communities around the world. Without donations like these it could not be possible. I sincerely appreciate the outpouring of donations from our parish. Thank you, Bradley Este from Troop 490

12 Tips for Effective Catholic Evangelization 6. Arouse their interest a. Praying that the Holy Spirit touch both the heart of your listener as well as your lips to speak His word, be alert for opportunities to share a spiritual experience and arouse some curiosity for the Faith. b. You may begin by asking a leading question regarding their own journey of faith, or by stimulating discussion on spiritual matters by using news headlines as openers. ****************************************** The power idea that must animate us is the thought of souls. This thought should spur us on. We must be concerned about how we are to reach people and bring them the word of truth and salvation. ~Venerable Mother Thecla Merlo

SPIRITUAL ADOPTION PROGRAM THE 7TH MONTH AFTER CONCEPTION

Your spiritually adopted baby continues to grow and mature. Brain waves, though already detectable for over five months, now resemble those of a full-term baby. This baby’s brain is also now capable of con-trolling his or her own body tem-perature. In addition, your baby’s bones are strengthening more, and he or she is putting on weight more quickly. The extra fat will improve insulation and provide an energy reserve for the baby following birth. Though birth is not far off, please keep praying for your spiritually adopted baby and his or her mother.

As the Catechism of the Catholic Church explains, "To receive in truth the Body and Blood of Christ given up for us, we must recognize Christ in the poorest, his brethren" (no. 1397).

"Catholic social teaching is a central and essential element of our faith."
