FIRST FRIDAY Friday of this week, March 3 is First Friday. We will be bringing Holy Communion to those who are ill or shut in. Please call the office at 484-5331 by 11:00am on Thursday if you or a family member would like a visit. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will take place after the Noon Mass on Friday, March 3. Benediction will take place at 3pm.

There are several websites which offer materials for daily Lenten reflections for those who “live” more on-line. https://www.bibleandthesacraments.com/streaming is an 11- lesson online course on “The Bible and the Sacraments” presented by Scott Hahn, beginning on Ash Wednesday, March 1. And, it is FREE. Free is good! STATIONS OF THE CROSS Stations of the Cross will be prayed each Friday of Lent starting at 11:30 am. (On Good Friday, April 14, Stations will be prayed at 2:30 pm.) Come and join us for Stations and then stay for the 12:05 pm Mass. CONFESSIONS DURING LENT The Sacrament of Reconciliation is available each Satur-day (except Holy Saturday, April 15) from 2:00 – 3:30 pm. Confessions are also heard on Thursdays from 11:30 am when we have a priest available. The Lansing Region Lenten Communal Penance Services will be on Sunday, March 26, at 2:00 pm., at both St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Alton Blvd., East Lansing, and St. Gerard Church, West Willow, Lansing. CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS “Black and Indian Mission” Next Sunday, the first Sunday of Lent, March 5, is the date we invite you to make a donation to the Annual Catho-lic Home Mission Appeal, serving the Black and Indian Missions here in the U.S. This collection exists to help bishops and dioceses to build the Church in African American, Native American, and Alaska Native communities. Who directly benefits? Students in the small mission school in the deep south; the Catholic community served by a native deacon in Alaska; the Native American parish on the prairie. The special envelope for this annual appeal is located in your bi-monthly envelope packet. I know, this is another appeal for some already-stretched budgets. We are only asked to do what we can do, and to remember that every little bit helps.
LENT IS UPON US STARTING THIS WEDNESDAY Wednesday of this week, March 1, is Ash Wednesday. While Ash Wednesday is not a holy day, many people know it is the time for us to begin the season of Lent and so they make the extra effort to participate in the Mass and to receive the Ashes, that outward sign indicating a desire to face the challenges of life with renewed hearts. Ashes will be distributed during each Mass on Ash Wednesday: 8:00 am., 12:05 pm., and 5:15 pm. OUR COMMON LENTEN PENANCE Together, we are called to observe Lenten ABSTI-NENCE. Abstinence – not eating meat – binds all those who are over the age of 14. ALL Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days both of Absti-nence AND fasting. FASTING binds those over 18 years and under 59 years of age. Eating between meals is not permitted on fast days – Ash Wednesday and Good Friday – except for liquids. One full meal and two smaller meals are permitted. We are encouraged to consider fasting for spiritual rea-sons all the other days of Lent if we are able. Please remember, any person whose health would be se-verely compromised if they observed these regulations is automatically dispensed from their obligation. LENTEN OFFERING OPPORTUNITIES As is our custom here at St. Mary Cathedral Parish during Lent, each Wednesday and Friday (including Ash Wednes-day and Good Friday), a special collection will be taken up at Masses to help the needy in our local area. The ENTIRE collection is used for this purpose. Last year over $16,000 was collected and distrusted to different organizations: Tri-County Meals on Wheels, Shared Pregnancy Women’s Center, Cristo Rey Community Center, Greater Lansing Food Bank, St. Vincent Home, Bethany House, Outreach Mass, Mother Teresa House, Advent House Ministries, Christian Services, Southside Community Kitchen. Thank you to last year’s donors. Please consider contrib-uting to this year’s efforts each Wednesday and Friday. LENTEN VESPERS SERVICES Lenten Vespers will be prayed the first five Sundays of Lent (not Palm Sunday) at 5:15 pm in the Chapel in Church. You are invited to make this a part of your Lenten prayer if able. LENTEN REFLECTION BOOKS Each household of the Parish is invited to pick up one free pocket-size copy of “Not By Bread Alone: Daily reflec-tions for Lent” at the exits as you leave Mass this weekend. Additional Lenten materials may be purchased from the Magazine rack or the Lighthouse CD display in the main lobby of the Church.

KofC YOUTH ESSAY CONTEST The St. Mary Cathedral KofC will also be hosting their annual Essay Contest. Theme is: Role of the Catholic Citizen. Open to all children in grades 8th-12th. Essay must be 500-750 words. Prizes will be awarded. Essay forms available at church entrances. Turn in essays to Rectory Office or to Sr. Joan in the Sacristy. Due date March 5.
