Advent: the season of wonderBy The Rev. Jon Hall

    You may wonder why there

are no red and green adorn-

ments at St. Martins in the

    early weeks of December.

Everywhere else you go thereis already Christmas music and

    endless advertisements. How-

    ever our Christian calendar has

    an intentional time of prepara-

    tion which includes the four

    weeks leading up to Christmas

    Day. This distinct season is

    called Advent, which comes

from the Latin for coming or

arrival and has been traced to

ing his followers to live on in

him and he in us, so that we

    also might become children of

    God.

And when we open that next

    giftthe gift of our inclusion

in the Body of Christ we fin

that we also are the gift, the gi

    that still needs opening. We

    are still unwrapping the myster

ies of Incarnation as we pursue

    our baptismal vow of seeking

written liturgies as early as the

    6th century.

    Advent is traditionally thought

    of in two ways: anticipation

for the Feast of the Incarnation,

in which we celebrate the birthof Jesus Christ here on earth

and hope in the Second Com-

    ing of Christ.

    The way we ponder these

aspects of the season may in-

clude special prayers to use at

    meal times at home, devotions

for each day according to an

    Advent calendar or booklet

Christmas: keep opening the giftsBy The Rev. Emily

    Hillquist Davis

    Growing up, I remember my

    family had one special recipe

that we made once a year. Mymom and I would spend hours

    chopping nuts and mixing and

    baking, and on Christmas

    morning after taking turns

    opening our presents, we

    would feast on Jesus Birthday

    Cake. It helped us remember,

Jesus is the reason for the

    season. And this is true:

    Jesus is the original Christmas

    gift.

    So this Christmas when you

    unwrap your presents, dont

leave Jesus under the tree.Make sure you open that gift!

Share whats inside. For in the

gift of Jesus we find, as he

grows up, the gift of Christ:

    Gods Chosen One proclaiming

good news to the poor and

    freedom to captives, healing

    the sick and lame, overcoming

death and the grave, and invit-

    the community of deacons.

    Mark will be present and

    New Prayer List

    By The Rev. Virginia Noel

Want to be involved at St. Mar-

tins but dont have time? Want

to be a part of our ministry but

    cant make the commitment? Try

this one: pray once a week for

    parishioners who are living with

chronic pain or have a chronic

    illness.

    Other members of St Martins

will be praying also, but you will

not be meeting as a group. You

may pray while driving to work,

walking the dog, or doing dishes.

This prayer list is unlikely to

change, that being the nature of

    chronic illnesses. You pick when

you want to pray for these peo-

ple. You may simply say their

names before God. Or you may

use a prayer from the Prayer

    Book.

If you are interested in this minis-

    try, please contact Virginia at

    church, or via e-mail at

    [email protected], or by

    phone at 636-779-2807.

    Confirmed and

    Received in the

    Episcopal Church

St. Martins members Liz andJim Arras were received and

    confirmed (respectively) into

    the Episcopal Church by

    Bishop Wayne Smith on

    Sunday, Oct. 30.

    Liz and Jim completed confir-

    mation classes at St. Martins

last year, but were unable to

    attend the confirmation ser-

    vice at Christ Church Cathe-

dral with the rest of their

class last spring. So the couple

caught up with the Bishop at a

    regularly scheduled visit at St.

    Timothys Episcopal Church in

    Creve Coeur to make their

    membership official.

If you are interested in being

    confirmed, received or

    reaffirmed in the Episcopal

    Church, St. Martins will be

    holding classes for youth and

    adults in early 2012. Watch

    for more information in our

Advent, continued from page 1(see our tract

    rack), and making

    quiet time during

    the day to consider

    what the presence

    of Christ means to

    us in the year

    ahead. The scriptures we

    read on Sundays reflect this

    sense of preparation as well.

The color we use in this sea-

son is the deep blue of the

    night sky just before morn-

    ings light. Historically purple

    was used, but Advent de-

serves its own color so that

it is not confused for another

    Lent. Advent contains mes-

sages of penitence but with a

Saturday evening worship takes rootBy The Rev. Emily Hillquist Davis

    At Worship under Construction these

past five weeks, weve been developing

our Saturday evening Eucharist by a

process of worship and debriefing, trial

and error. Sometimes it was so rough, it

seemed we should be wearing hard hats!

But we are settling into a mellow groove.

It is an informal service with participation

of many who come, especially kids. We

offer the opportunity to let the scrip-

tures read you as we hear and respond

to the Sunday Gospel passage in several

translations. The service, which is taking

place every Saturday at 5 p.m., is geared

    toward flexibility, hospitality, and peace.

    In December, several diverse special

events will take place in the context of

    this worship time:

    Saturday, Dec. 3, 5 p.m.Worship & Fellowship with Bishop

Stephen Dokolo and his wife Lillian

    Clement

Bp. Stephen will preach for us and cele-

brate the Eucharist followed by a recep-

tion in Park Hall. We are looking to spice

up this worship with African liturgy and

    music.

    Saturday, Dec. 17, 5 p.m.

    A Blue Christmas Communion

This time of year can be hard on those of

us who grieve. This simple yet deeply

    moving Advent worship service provides

a time of prayer, meditation, candlelight

and music that acknowledges and honors

sadness and mixed feelings that holidays

sometimes provoke and help us offer

    them up to God.

    Saturday, Dec. 24, 5 p.m.

    Christmas Pageant & Holy Eucharist

The children of St. Martins take center

stage for a fun re-telling of the traditionalChristmas story. All ages are invited!

    (Candlelight Christmas service will begin

    at 10:30 on Christmas Eve.)

    and serving Christ

    in all people

    (including our-

    selves).

    As Christians, our

    celebration of

    Christmas can be

so much deeper than a mere

    exchange of presents. By

Gods grace we are what we

eat: The gifts of God for the

People of God, as we say

    during Communion. As

    Christ nourishes us in the

    Eucharist, we are called into

    the cycle of nourishing oth-

    ers.

    Homework: This Christmas,

lets try to name for each

    sense of joy that the

    birth of Christ

    brings.

    Advent is also the

    beginning of the

    Churchs calendar,

    which starts Nov. 27 this

year. This is when a new

    cycle of daily and Sunday

    scripture readings and

    prayers are begun.

We hope that you will take

    this season of Advent to

    peacefully get ready for our

    celebrations Christmas Eve

    and Christmas Day.

Peace to you in this season

    of wonder,

Anticipation and hope in Advent Diocesan AdventLessons and Carols

    Experience the traditional

    Bible readings and Advent

    carols with members from

    around our diocese.

    Sunday, Dec. 4 at 6 p.m.

    Christ Church Cathedral

    St. Louis

    By Earl Naylor, Music Director

With the beginning of the Advent season comes

many changes in our worship life: different ser-

vice music, a new lectionary cycle, and new col-

ors for the paraments and clergy stoles. This

year, beginning December 4, we will have a new

set of vestments and paraments for Advent,

    which will be blue.

Historically, the primary sanctuary color of Ad-

vent is purple. This is the color of penitence and

fasting as well as the color of royalty to welcome

the Advent of the King. The penitential aspect is

still there today, but a greater emphasis has been

placed on hope and anticipation. We use the

color blue to symbolize this expectation and

    waiting.

Many Protestant churches now use blue to dis-

tinguish the Season of Advent from Lent. Royal

blue is sometimes used as a symbol of royalty.

Some churches use bright blue to symbolize the

night sky, the anticipation of the impending an-

nouncement of the Kings coming, or to symbol-

ize the waters of Genesis 1, the beginning of a

    new creation.

    St. Martins 2010 College Scholar-

    ship recipient Chelsea Johnson is

doing well in her first semester at

Missouri State University inSpringfield. She was recommended

    as a deserving, well-qualified stu-

dent by Circle of Concern. She is

proving herself to be an excellent

    choice.

Chelsea has declared a major in

Nursing with a minor in Spanish.

She has a strong GPA going into

final exams, finds time to partici-

    pate in extracurricular activities

    and continues to do volunteer

work in the community as she did

when she was a student at Park-

    way South High School.

    Chelsea is a midfielder (D-wing)

    on Missouri States first lacrosse

club team and volunteers with the

    Big Brother Big Sister organization

in the Meal Time Buddy Program.

    The program provides children

who attend the local Boys and

Girls Clubs with a meal-time part-

ner and friend for one or two

hours a week. She is mentoring a

    10-year-old boy this semester.

    Chelsea says that their favorite

thing to do after they eat is to

    shoot hoops.

    ABCs Extreme HomeMake-Overprogram

    producers selected

    Chelsea along with

    other students in the

    Nursing Department

    to go to Joplin for

    several days to work

    on one of the seven

    houses the show will

    be building for resi-

    dents whose homes

    were destroyed by

    the storm. Although

    she said she was

    grateful for the opportunity to

help and to be a part of such an

    exciting project, the most excit-

ing day of her life happened in

    October when she was chosen

    to accompany her Grandfather,

    Norman Dale Miller, on an

    Honor Flight to Washington,

D.C. to visit World War II me-

    morials. Mr. Miller fought with

the 3rd Army at the Battle of the

    Bulge during the winter months

    of 1944-45.

    Chelsea already has plans for

    this summer.

    She hopes tobecome a

    Certified

    Nursing As-

    sistant

    (CNA) so

    that she can

    help those

    afflicted with

    Alzheimers.

    She also

    hopes to get

    funding to

    spend time in

    Costa Rica

    perfecting her Spanish. Her pas-

sion to become a bilingual nurse

began when she spent the sum-

mer before her junior year in

    Peru.

Chelsea has chosen to live in a

    Living and Learning dormitory

    where she is surrounded by

    other students majoring in the

    medical field. She considers all

    her suite-mates good friends.

    They enjoy exploring Spring-

St. Martins youth: reaching out to JoplinBy Heidi Gioia, Director of Youth Ministries

As reported in last months issue of Messages,

the vestry voted to give one-third of this

years garage sale proceeds to Joplin relief and

rebuild efforts. After visiting the area in Octo-

ber, we discussed how to make faithful deci-

sions. We brainstormed a list of ideas, talked

to Joplin residents and researched area or-

    ganizations. After prayerful consideration, our

youth are proud to announce the recipients

    of our outreach funds.

Heres a summary of the efforts they will be

    funding this year:

Purchasing Christmas gifts for Joplin chil-

    dren in need

Funding a spring social for both the Joplin

High School and Middle School Student

Councils in an effort to bolster spirits

Donating toward the regreening of city

    parks

    Supporting Childrens Haven, an organi-

zation that provides temporary shelter to

children whose families are in crisis

In addition to sending money to these worth-

while organizations, the youth are excited to DO

missional work in Joplin in 2012. To that end, we

    plan to do the following:

Join the high school & middle school for

their socials & getting to know them a little

    better

Assist with the planting of trees and green-

    ery

Assist with light construction jobs for the

    Lafayette House transitional housing project,

an initiative of the Diocese of Western Mis-souri

Its exciting to see how our youth are really

coming to understand what mission is all about.

They are meeting people and hearing their sto-

    Lunch Bunch Adventures

The search is on for members who would

like to help guide the affairs of our church

for the next three years. The vestry nomi-

nating committee is now accepting applica-

tions for elections at our January 29 Annual

    Meeting.

Vestry members help discern, establish, im-

plement, and evaluate policies and proce-

dures for our parish. The vestry meets once

each month and each member is assigned

    responsibilities for various ministries within

our parish. There are 12 members on the

vestry and they each serve three-year terms.

Members are elected on a rotating basis.

This year, we have four positions to fill.

The vestry nominating committee relies on

the congregation to nominate members for

these positions. To serve as a vestry mem-

ber, you must be confirmed or received inthe Episcopal Church, attend worship regu-

larly and be an active participant in the life of

our church. If you or someone you know

would like to be considered for a vestry

position, please contact Sherrie Algren at

    [email protected].

    Vestry nominations

    By Mary Pomeroy

It was an overcast, chilly Autumn day, but

    twenty-two hardy Lunch Bunch members

(singles and couples) ventured out recently to

visit the Daniel Boone home and BoonesfieldVillage in Defiance,

    MO. Many were sur-

    prised and pleased

    with all of the addi-

    tions to the Boone

    village that had taken

    place since their last

    visit. The Boone

home itself has undergone more restoration as

well. Our tour guide was fun and extremely

    knowledgeable.

After our visit to the historic home and village,

the group happily moved on to Montelle Win-ery for a little wine tasting and lunch. The sun

did peep in and out at the winery showing off

the beautiful fall colors glowing in the valley

below the winery. It was a great trip for all.

The Lunch Bunch group meets the fourth

Thursday of each month at 11:30 a.m. in Park

Hall. Bring a sack lunch and join us next month!
