REJOICE AND BE GLAD HOUSEHOLDS IN GOD’S SERVICE Intheancientworld,“household”wasawide-reachingconcept.When Joshua today speaks of his household serving the Lord, hemeant not just those people who lived inside his walls or thoserelated to him by blood ormarriage; hemeant slaves or servantsandtheirfamilies,andanyoneindebtedtohiminanyway.EvenhislivestockandotherpossessionswouldbeconsecratedtoserviceofGod. In ourworld,we value allowing individuals their freedom tochoosehowtheylive,andwouldn’tthinkofofferingourpetstotheserviceofGod.But,aswediscernourvocationasdisciplesbaptizedintoChrist,wecancometorealizehowfar-rangingthe“households”of our lives still are: how we act toward our spouses, children, roommatesoranyonewelivewith;ourbehaviorwithneighbors;orinpublicasweencountermany“strangers”everyday instoresortraf icwhosuddenlyare“nextdoor”tous.Howcanweuseourtime, ourresources, orgiftsforsel lessreasonsratherthanpersonalgain?NomatterwhatlifeourwitnesstotheGoodNewscallsusto,weallhavea“household”thatmustbeconsecratedtoserviceoftheLordourGod.©J.S.Paluch
Today is the ifth and inal Sunday of our reading fromJohn6,thesecondlongestchapterintheNewTestament(Luke 1 is the longest).Evenso,wedonotreadtheentiresixthchapterofJohn.WeskippedJesus’walkingonwater(John 6:16-21)! The church gives us ive Sundays withthischapterpreciselybecauseofitsprofoundEucharistictheology. What began with the multiplication of theloaves ends the following day with nearly all of hisdisciples abandoning him and returning to their formerway of life precisely because of this “hard” saying, theconsumption of Jesus’ very lesh and blood. Jesus thenasks the Twelve if they too will leave. We have theimpressionthat if theyhadchosento leave, Jesuswouldsimplyhavestartedanew.Hewasnotgoingtochangehisteaching to attract the crowds. Instead, he would teachwhat heknew to be true, for hiswordswere Spirit andlife. Jesus knows that nobody can come to him, canbelieve inhim, unless it isgrantedby theFather. Inourwords, we say faith is a gift. We cannot come to Jesusunlesswe are given the gift of faith. Only if that specialgift is granted by the Father will one believe. All thearguments, discussions, proofs, demonstrations, blogposts, and talks cannot guarantee faith. It is a gift givennot by us, but by God the Father. How do the Twelverespondwhen Jesusaskswhether they toomight leave?Simon Peter answers with a question of his own: towhomshallwego?Youhavethewordsofeternallife... you are the Holy One of God.ThuswehaveinJohn’sgospelPeter’s“confession”thatcomesastheculminationof this profound chapter in which we have themultiplicationoftheloaves,Jesus’walkingonwater, andthe bread of life discourse. Afterwitnessing such deedsandspeechSimonPeterspeaksforalldisciples,to whomshall we go?Jesus’wordsareeverlastinglife.ToleaveJesus is in many senses to leave life itself. For SimonPeter,then,thereisnootherplaceorpersontowhomhemightgo.Heisnotreturningtohisformerwayoflife.Hehasbeenintroducedtosomethingmore,eternallifefromtheWord of God come down from heaven. For the onewhohasfaith, inthefaceofsucharevelationthereisnootherchoice.
