My Dear Friends, Last Sunday’s theme was the gift of faith. Today,

we the Church, the Catholics, meditate on two examples of faith: Naaman in the first reading, and the ten lepers in the Gospel, with a lesson also on the virtue of gratitude. The great general Naaman was kind of incensed at the Prophet Elisha’s command to bathe in the Jordan seven times, and he was going home in full fury until one of his servants convinced him to follow the prophet’s directions. When Naaman was cured from his leprosy, he takes two mule loads of the Israel earth, according to the ancient Idolaters’ belief that every god was residing only in a specific region, so that Naaman could worship the God of Israel even in Damascus insofar that he could stand on the Holy Land of Israel. Notice that Naaman was a Syrian, and an enemy of Israel, and he comes back with gratitude to thank Elisha, who did not accept the Syrian gifts, because the miracle is God’s work, and not done by the human power of the prophet.

In today’s Gospel, only one cured leper comes back to thank Jesus for the healing, and he was another enemy

of Israel, a Samaritan. And Jesus gives us the reason for the healing: “Your faith has been your salvation.” How many times we pray with our lips to the Lord for miracles or healing or favors, but in our hearts we are so discouraged or cynical that we feel that the good Lord will not listen to us. What Jesus is telling us is to have faith in Him, because He can grant us any favor or healing. It is our faith in

Jesus that moves His divine power. Just think how we act with our children when they ask for a tiny permission. We love them so much that we grant that favor, just anticipating the delight in their smiling eyes. God, the most tender father of all, is more eager to make us smile, than we are trusting in His crazy love and generosity. MIRACLES DO HAPPEN IF WE HAVE FAITH!

Notice also how Jesus follows the prescription of the Mosaic law on skin diseases by sending them to be examined by the priests, because Jesus said that He came to fulfill, not to abolish, the Old Testament.

The final lesson is gratitude, a very special virtue that is appreciated by God and people alike. One of the most common topics of complaints by our senior citizens is the ingratitude of their grown-up children. But very often all of us display the same attitude toward God’s immense generosity toward us. When we lose our good health or a business deal, we pray and beg God, we go to extra Masses and do extra sacrifices and prayers...Once we get the favor, we do not repeat all those good actions...Our prayers of petitions are long, our prayers of gratitude are almost non-existent. Let us change our attitude on giving thanks and, by the way, not only toward God but also in appreciating our brothers’ and sisters’ generosity towards us. We Catholics have taught the entire world in this matter, calling the heart of our worship with the term EUCHARIST, which means THANKSGIVING; this

is another reason we come together on Sundays, because we want solemnly and publicly tell God at least once a week THANK YOU! Naturally, we do this many times privately, for instance, when we open our eyes in the morning (thank you God for the new day), and in the evening and after driving, studying, working, playing and eating. God does appreciate our gratitude, and the more grateful we are, the more we will receive.

As you well know, October is Respect Life Month, from womb to tomb. We are in the middle of our 40 Days for Life. Keep praying and fasting during these 40 days, which will end on November 6, for life and for those who face difficult decisions.

A young lady offered me this poem as a sign of her repentance:

An Apology to an Angel I anxiously await the moment my soul is reunited

with yours; the decision I made long ago deserves the pain which my heart endures.

Reparation I cannot achieve for the vile sin I did commit; my loss and grief has no face that I know, I

made my choice; now I live with it. At the time it seemed acceptable, many opinions

were cast my way; support for my choice was all around, but God would not approve of that day. It is hard to accept forgiveness, memories are hard

to surrender; I know what I did was very wrong; my penance lives as I remember.

People are given many chances, God gives many blessings from above; sometimes gifts are taken for

granted and a child symbolizes God’s love. I received a note from a parishioner rightly upset

at the way some visitors come to Church without proper attire. I always try to send a message to all parishioners and visitors, that we should go to Church dressed just as if we’re going to a nice restaurant; otherwise we cannot do honor to the Eucharistic banquet. Obviously, under the name of nice restaurants, I do not include the beaches’ watering holes!

In the matter of the Eucharistic celebration, please remember to bow at the creed at the words “By the power of the Holy Spirit He was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man,” and also don’t forget to bow or give a sign of reverence before receiving Jesus in Holy Communion.

I do appreciate our American custom to applaud a good singer or player, but I do not think it is appropriate during Mass (except maybe at the end of the sermon, to wake up the dozing parishioners!)

Lord Jesus, as You once called the first disciples to make them fishers of men, let your sweet

invitation continue to resound: Come! Follow Me! Give young men and women the grace of

responding quickly to Your voice. Support your bishops, priests and consecrated people in their

apostolic labor. Grant perseverance to our seminarians and to all those who are carrying out

the ideal of a life totally consecrated to Your service. Awaken in our community a missionary eagerness. Lord, send workers to your harvest and do not allow humanity to be lost for the lack of pastors, missionaries and people dedicated to

the cause of the Gospel. Mary, Mother of the Church, the model of every vocation, help us to

say “yes” to the Lord Who calls us to cooperate in the divine plan of salvation.

YOUR FAITH HAS SAVED YOU Our Gospel Reading from St. Luke relates to how Jesus healed 10 lepers. However, only one realized the full sense of his healing and he returned to say “Thank you.” To that gesture Jesus responds to him, “Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.” This is another case where something may

have been lost in our translation. The last line in its original Greek might also be

translated “Your faith has made you whole,” or “Your faith has made you well.” In any case, the point is the importance of gratitude to God. How often have we pointed out that stewardship is a response in gratitude to God’s blessings? That ongoing and consistent feeling of thanks is so important.

Jesus healed ten, but only one was really completely healed. The other nine were healed physically, but only the one who felt the gratitude was healed both physically and spiritually. In that sense he was truly “made whole” and “saved.”

That is the same salvation that we seek, and the key to it would seem to be that deep sense of thanksgiving as part of our lives and how we live them. Bishop John C. Wester of the Diocese of Salt Lake City opened a recent stewardship conference in his diocese by saying, “Stewardship is about gratitude - recognizing what there is to be thankful for. Gratitude is at the heart of our faith in the Eucharist.” Catholic Stewardship Consultants, Inc.

GRATITUD Seguramente podemos recordar al menos unos cuantos días en nuestras vidas cuando las cosas iban tan bien que nada podía ponernos de mal humor. Tal vez fue el día en que una persona muy especial nos invitó a su fiesta de graduación o el día de nuestra boda. Quizás fue el día en que nos enteramos de que tendríamos un hijo largamente esperado o el día en que recibimos una promoción tardía. Hubo alegría en nuestro corazón, ligereza en nuestros pasos y gran vitalidad en el curso del día. Probablemente nos fuimos al teléfono para llamar a unas cuantas personas importantes y contarles acerca de nuestra buena fortuna. Seguramente que así se sintieron Naamán y el leproso cuando fueron curados de su terrible enfermedad. No podían contener su gratitud, y aunque ambos desconocían las costumbres de un país extranjero conocían los buenos modales de dar las gracias a las personas responsables de sus curaciones.
