  • On this Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time, the religious leaders continue to question and challenge Jesus. At this point, the Pharisees, together with the Herodians, try to entrap Jesus by their question about the payment of taxes. The Herodians were supporters of King Herod, who collaborated with the Romans. Such collaboration would have required a compromised observance of the Mosaic Law. Thus, they usually did not associate with the Pharisees.

The Pharisees, on the other hand, taught scrupulous observance of the Mosaic Law and opposed Roman occupation. Herodians favored the payment of taxes; the Pharisees opposed it. Both the Herodians and the Pharisees approach Jesus, asking that he take sides in their dispute. If Jesus answers with the Pharisees, he shows himself to be an enemy of Rome. If he answers with the Herodians, he offends popular Jewish religious sensibilities. It is no-win situation.

Jesus shows that he is very much aware of what they are trying to do. He asks to see a

Roman coin, which is readily provided to him. It may have come from the hand of a Herodian, but the Pharisees show themselves to be quite willing to accept this compromise. Jesus has already exposed the Pharisees as hypocrites.

Jesus takes his response one step further. He asks that his questioners examine the coin.

Agreeing that it is Caesar’s image on the coin, Jesus tells them that it must belong to Caesar. Avoiding the question of lawfulness altogether, Jesus answers their question with simple logic. Then, going further still, Jesus tells them that their obligation is to pay to God that which belongs to God.

Jesus’ response to the Herodians and Pharisees suggests the ethic that Christians ought

to adopt. It reminds us of the importance of keeping things in their proper perspective. Today, we might ask how do we attach ourselves to worldly things at the expense of the love and honor that we owe to God?

PS- First of all, I want to thank all who have responded to God’s Call to Love and Serve.

Your response has been wonderful. Your continued support and generosity to our parish will help us to continue to meet the needs of St. Mark’s parish community, well into the future. If you have not responded yet, please consider making a contribution in the upcoming weeks. Again, blessings and prayers to all.

Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam, Fr. Greg

Ministry News Thank you Meals on Wheels Ministry!!

    Join the Team!!

St. Mark Meals on Wheels Ministry (MOW) has been preparing and delivering hot meals to mostly needy seniors in our community for over 28 years. Currently, our combined number of clients on the 1st and 2nd Saturdays of each month runs between 150 and 160.

Over 800 Meals have been safely prepared and delivered during the current Pandemic!

How can you help? While our kitchen crews and delivery teams are presently well staffed, we do have an immediate need for volunteers to prepare or otherwise provide desserts to complement our monthly offerings on a rotating basis. It is customary that 24 servings be provided by each volunteer on a given Saturday. Individually wrapped or sandwich bagged cupcakes, sliced firm cake, banana or zucchini bread, or cookies (2 to 4 depending on size) work best. Those interested are asked to contact our dessert coordinator Joanne Catts ([email protected])for scheduling and delivery information.

While we appreciate the dedicated service of all of our volunteers, it is fitting that we recognize and thank Jim and Maureen Quinn who recently decided to "retire" from delivering meals after many, many years of dedicated service to our MOW Ministry.

Our Respect Life Ministry is Hosting a Baby Shower Collection

On the weekends of October 17/18 and 24/25, Respect Life will be hosting a collection to benefit A Safe Place, Catholic Charities and Lifeline Pregnancy. On these weekends they will be collecting diapers, wipes and miscellaneous baby items. A collection bin will be located in the gathering space before and after all Masses. There will also be a bin by the parish hall doors during the week (Oct. 19-23) for convenient drop off.

Our next Virtual Disciples Night will be Thursday, November 5 from 8-9pm! Reserve your seat here: https://event.webinarjam.com/register/110/5v1lgsy4Love Never Fails with special guest Heather Khym.

Building on our series on the theological virtues, Heather Khym will be speaking to us about the virtue of love or charity. One of the most talked about topics, love is often misunderstood and misconstrued. Heather will help us dive into the true and biblical understanding of love as Jesus communicates and exemplifies to us. Heather has been serving in ministry for over 25 years and has a passion for evangelization, discipleship, and creating an environment for people to have a personal encounter with God. She attended Franciscan University where she studied Theology with a concentration in Catechetics and met her husband Jake. In 2005 they started Life Restoration, a ministry which seeks to help people experience freedom and restoration in Jesus. Currently, Heather leads retreats, speaks, and has a successful podcast called Abiding Together. She lives in British Columbia with Jake and their 3 children.

  • 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time Matthew 22: 15- 21 Social Responsibility At that Jesus said to them, “Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” (Matthew 22: 21)

Living the Word: In the Gospel today, we hear Jesus explain how there is a separation between the earthly realm and the realm of God. Although we are part of society and must pay our dues via taxes, etc., the kingdom of God can intercept and weave through every aspect of our lives. We need to do God’s work in all areas of our lives – our daily work and living a way that reflects God’s will. So, this week, sit down with your children and try to explain this concept. And ask this question: How can we as Catholics, live in the secular world but reflect our religious values? Post their answers on a pa-per and place this paper either on your prayer space or on the refrigerator where all can see!

Questions of the Week: Child: Who needs help in your neighborhood or community? What could you and your family do to help? Adult: How much responsibility do you feel that government should take for meeting the needs of the less fortunate in our society? How wiling are you to contribute?

Fun Facts for Catholic Kids: On October 24th, we celebrate the feast day of a weaver! Saint Anthony Claret was the son of a Spanish weaver and worked as a weaver himself until he decided to become a priest! In his lifetime, he preached over 25,000 sermons and wrote 144 books and pamplets. Is that why they say someone is busy as a

weaver? Or is that “busy as a beaver”? Or busy as a bee? Well, get busy today – and weave yourself a great day living your Catholic faith! Remember – “bee” a great role model for your younger siblings and others!

  • The Legion of Mary, Mother of Mercy Praesidium would like to inspire you to a DO-IT-YOURSELF Retreat by committing 5 minutes of your day for 33 days to the Marian Consecration. What is the Marian Consecration? It is the act of entrusting one’s body, soul, possessions, works and entire life to the protection, guidance and intercession of Our Lady. Starting Nov. 4 and ending Dec. 8, on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, using a program developed by St. Louis de Monfort but in a simpler version, we will read, pray and reflect in the comfort of our homes, yet be spiritually united. A guide will be provided to help you through a power packed and

updated form of Marian Consecration following the teachings of our contemporary “Marian experts.” The Morning Glory Consecration Prayer will follow the 8:30AM Mass on Dec. 8 at Church.

Week One- St. Louis de Monfort, Week Two- St. Maximillian Kolbe Week Three- St. Teresa of Calcutta Week Four- St. John Paul II Five Remaining Days: review Dec. 8-Consecration Prayer on Feast of the Immaculate Conception at St. Mark Church

For additional information, please contact Mary-Lou Cook, email: [email protected] or 910-232-0460. Guides will be distributed following Masses on October 24/25 and Oct. 31/Nov. 1 If you are unable to attend church, we will work with you to ensure you receive one.

Why Consecrate to Mary? It is a further deepening of our devotion to and relationship with Jesus through Our Lady. If you already have an affection for Mary and talk to her often, consecration can be that bridge that unites you to her more deeply. Give yourself to Mary- heart, mind and soul- in order to bring you closer to her Son, Jesus Christ!

Coats for Kids Collection Nov. 7th & 8th

The Knights of Columbus are sponsoring a drive to purchase new winter coats for needy children. We

will distribute 120 coats to children of Christ the King, which is our mission church, to children of the Domestic Violence Shelter and to children in need identified by Catholic Charities. With a little luck from the world of delivery, we will distribute

    on November 20, 21 & 22.

The Knights have already ordered the coats but hope that we can receive financial support from St. Mark Catholic Church & School families through donations.

We will have tables set up for monetary collection after each Mass on the weekend of

November 7th & 8th. Also, the school will participate by donating the proceeds they receive for “Jeans Day” on November 6.

Please do not bring coats to the collection. The coats we are ordering are controlled by the supplier to avoid any Covid-19 concerns. Make checks payable to “Knights of Columbus” Thanks in advance for your support to keep our little ones warm for the winter. God Bless You!
