Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 30, 2018

God is good! Certainly, we should be thankful for the beautiful weather we had last week at our Fall Festival. Friday and Saturday both were ideal and many came to St. Mark’s to enjoy all we had prepared for them. The booths offered exciting prizes, the bands were terrific and the food was delicious. It looked to me that the youngsters enjoyed the rides. I know I liked the one ride I went on, but I didn’t feel the need to go on any others. (At the end of the night, at 10:00 pm, the main committee for the Fall Festival goes on a ride together to celebrate the Festival’s conclusion. The ride chosen went up and down, round and round, and the individual cars swayed back and forth. All us gown-ups and old folks enjoyed the ride, except for the two who got sick!)

Our volunteers were amazing. I know how hard they have worked in the past but this year I was given a new perspective. With preparations occurring right outside my door, and even in my basement, I grew in my appreciation of the hard work and long hours expended by our volunteers. Some of them were on the grounds at 7:00 am Saturday. Some finished cleaning the grounds at 1:30 am Sunday. How blessed we are to see before us living examples of Christ’s command that we serve one another. I’m so proud of these servants.

I’m thankful, too, to all who came to the Fall Festival. We had a wonderful turnout of current parishioners, we welcomed back former parishioners and we met many neighbors who walked from their homes and apartments to enjoy our hospitality. It all led to a terrific weekend!

I found out from the minutes of the Council of Priests’ meeting that the former site of our church at 8300 Morganford Road has a buyer. (Sad that no one from the archdiocese called to tell me.) The buyer is Providence Classical Christian Academy. While it may be distressing to learn that the archdiocese is selling to a school—with enrollment trends as they are we don’t need any competition for students—they feel that the projected yearly tuition of $9,000 is not a threat to neighboring Catholic schools, such as St. Stephen Protomartyr, St. Raphael, St. Dominic Savio, or St. Mark. We’ll see.

Finally, I encourage you to make plans to see the movie “Gosnell” after it debuts in St. Louis on October 12. You may remember the horror of Dr. Kermit Gosnell. He was the Philadelphia abortion doctor convicted of murder in 2013. His clinic was a place of terror where abortions were botched, women were injured, and babies who survived the abortion procedure were left to die. It is important for people of faith to see this movie and show support for its producers and actors. You can imagine they faced plenty of opposition from the pro-abortion attitudes of Hollywood and the film industry. May God bless all of you. Father Hambrough

Pet Blessing All parishioners are invited to bring their pets on October 4, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, for the annual Blessing of Pets. The prayer begins at 2:00 pm on

the front yard of school, alongside Ripa Avenue.

Please note that there will be only one Mass on Monday-Thursday, October 8-11, and the Mass will begin at 6:30 am. On Friday, October 12, a second Mass will be celebrated for the students of the school and, of course, for all

parishioners at 8:00 am. Also, there will be no Adoration of the Eucharist on Tuesday, October 9.

Parents: Is your son thinking about the priesthood? Has he mentioned that being a priest appeals to him? Do you think your son would make a good priest? The Vocation Office of the archdiocese is sponsoring a parent information meeting on Monday, October 15, at 7:00 pm at Incarnate Word Church, 13416 Olive Blvd. Chesterfield, MO 63017. Come and learn of what you can do to foster a priestly vocation and what your son can expect as he journeys to the priesthood. For more information see stlvocations.org.

Dear Parishioners,

It is hard to believe that Monday is October 1st and the students are more than half-way through their first quarter. I am excited to welcome our Oasis volunteers

back in the building this week. Our Oasis volunteers are a blessing to our school and the students look forward to working with them.

We will also celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi this week with a Blessing of the Pets. Msgr. Hambrough will bless all creatures great and small on Thursday, October 4th. You are invited to bring your animal friends as long as they are appropriately collared, leashed, and/or contained. The blessing of the pets will happen on the front lawn at 2:05 p.m. I thank you for your continued prayers and please know that you are in our prayers.

“Rosary Coast to Coast” on October 7th at 3:00 pm

On Sunday, October 7, Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, the US–through Rosary Coast to Coast– will join with our International brothers and sisters to pray for our respective nations.

Americans across the country are invited to pray Rosary Coast to Coast wherever they can gather: in parish Churches; in front of state capitols; along the US coasts and borders; as families; or while viewing the live-stream of the National Rosary Rally. Rosary Coast to Coast will take place at 4 pm Eastern, 3 pm Central, 2 pm Mountain, 1 pm Pacific. The reasoning behind these times will be to support all time zones in full participation of

events, aside from Sunday Masses. Indeed, the Heart of the Nation will be Immersed in the Hour Of Mercy. The National Rosary Rally will take place, as well, in front of the US Capitol on this day. They will begin with Mass at St. Peter’s on Capitol Hill followed by a Rosary procession to the Rally site. The Rosary Rally will be live-streamed.

If the Blessed Mother is “calling you” to attend, plan on meeting me on Union Rd. at 2:45 pm in front of St. Mark’s Church so we can be ready to recite the Glorious Mysteries at 3:00 pm.

Don’t forget to bring your Rosary. Thank you, Denise Plumley
