Dear Parishioner: Charles Wesley used the Old Testament Book of Haggai as the inspiration
for his famous hymn, Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus. In it the prophet
Haggai spoke to the people of Judah who returned from their exile in
Babylon to find the world, as they knew it, had been destroyed. Haggai
reminded the people of God’s faithfulness in the past, and reassured them
of God’s abiding presence, which would bring them the peace and joy they
longed for. In this third millennium, our world has changed, and continues to change,
often in troubling ways. Like the people of Judah, we too, long for peace
and joy. The seasons of Advent and Christmas remind us of God’s saving
actions in the past and they also reassure us that God continues to act in our
world and be present to us. As people of faith, we know our true joy and
lasting peace can only be found in Christ. And so, we sing out “Come, thou
long expected Jesus.”
Faithfully, W. Becket Soule, O.P. (The Rev.) W. Becket Soule, O.P.
