THE THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JUNE 30, 2019

FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR

Ordinary Time The Easter Season concluded three weeks ago with the feast of Pentecost. Since then we celebrated our two credal feasts of Holy Trinity and Corpus Christ. This Sunday, we resume Sundays numbered according to the weeks of the liturgical year, so that today is the “13th Sunday of the year”: Ordinary time consists of the Sundays of the year counted independently of the four liturgical seasons (Advent & Christmas, Lent & Easter). Though many hear “ordinary” as “nothing special,” it can also mean “counted,” in the sense of “ordinal.” The counting marks progress: With the coming of Sunday one more week has been consecrated to Christ. We bring our joys and hopes, griefs and fears from the past week with us into Sunday Mass and reckon them as shared with Christ in his death and resurrection. The coming of Sunday means we increased our communion with Christ by one more week. The counting of the Sundays also reminds that we, too, are works in progress. We do not live like the angels all in one moment, but over the course of a lifetime. God shapes us over time. Life is a journey and requires of us a certain degree of patience and endurance. Finally, the counting of Sundays is also a kind of conquest. Our Lord sent his apostles on a mission to make disciples of all nations. That mission extends in space, biblically moving from God’s city of Jerusalem to the capital of the world, Rome. But the mission also moves in time from Pentecost to Judgment Day. One more Sunday is one more week of conquest, proclaiming the Lordship of Jesus Christ through every moment entrusted to us. Farewell, Fr. Michael Ruffalo! I’ll miss your eloquence and humor, among your other virtues.

Welcome, seminarian Jacob Gruber! As you and the Church discern your calling to the priesthood, I pray that the year we share with you may inspire all of us to answer our Lord’s call ever more perfectly.

—Fr. Dave

CONNECTING WITH CATHOLICS IN COLLEGE 80% of kids stop practicing the faith at some point during college. Don’t let your child become a statistic! Through Newman Connection, we can keep our kids (or grandkids) connected to the faith. Just contact the Religious Education Office at 412-771-7480 or [email protected] with your student’s information. Only their first and last name and school they will be attending is needed. We will register your student with the Newman Connection, and then a Catholic campus minister at their college will be able to reach out to them and invite them to participate in campus ministry. It is a simple thing to do, and it might be the most important thing you do for your loved one as they graduate high school!

LITURGY OF THE WORD WITH CHILDREN All children entering Kindergarten through grade 4 are invited to participate in the “Liturgy of the Word with Children” every Sunday at the 11:00 a.m. Mass. Every week the children actively participate with the readings and have a discussion of the gospel message to plan how they will follow that message in the coming week. Each child receives a “Children’s Bulletin” with activities that supplement the readings. Please encourage your child to participate, and if they are hesitant, feel free to join them! If you have any questions please contact Pat Kulak at 412-262-1162 or Steven Swank at 412-771-7480.

CATECHISTS NEEDED Our Religious Education program is in need of faith filled volunteers to serve as catechists (teachers) and help pass on the faith to our children. In particular, we need a Kindergarten catechist for our Sunday morning sessions (9:15-10:30 a.m.) and Kindergarten, second grade, and fourth grade catechists for our Monday afternoon session (4:30-5:45 p.m.). Is God calling you to this important ministry? To learn more, contact Steven Swank at 412-771-7480 or [email protected].

INTRODUCING EDGE COMING THIS 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR

What is EDGE Middle School Ministry? An exciting new option that combines faith formation and Catholic youth ministry designed specifically for grades 6-8. It provides a safe and fun place for youth to find solid Catholic community, get answers to their questions about faith, and experience Jesus in a profound and personal way. This year, EDGE will be offered both as an option for 6-8 grade religious education and as the Middle School Youth Ministry for the Holy Trinity/St. John of God/St. Malachy Grouping. How can you get involved? Seeking adult volunteers who desire to use their gifts and talents to invest in the youth of our Church. CORE Team: Take an active role in being present to and in relationship with our middle school youth. Support Team: Support EDGE nights in various ways, primarily in planning, preparing, and serving the food for EDGE Nights. For more information, visit https://rockenrocatholics.org/edge or contact Kristin at [email protected].
