Let’s think about God –Jesus the refugee (LKS2)

“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” Matthew 25:35

Reflection – June 20th was International Refugee Day. Nearly 71 million people are currently displaced. Almost 26 million of them are refugees who fled to another country. About half of the

world’s refugees are children under the age of 18 years old. Remember that Jesus was a refugee when he was a young baby.

Big Questions – Can you imagine having to leave your home quickly and move somewhere else? What would you want to take? What could you leave behind? What would you miss? How should we

respond to refuges? What would Jesus say to refugees? What would Jesus expect us to do to help refugees?

Draw a picture of a rucksack – in it your can only take 5 items from your home. Draw the objects you would take.

Map Imagine that a refugee child has moved to the house next door. Draw a map to show them the way to all the essential, important and fun places to visit near your home. Use a key to help them. You will definitely want to include: Our School, A shop, The doctors, The dentist, a park, a library. What else would be a fun or a helpful place to include? Will you need to include a bus stop?

Using the grid below to answer the following challenges.Challenge 1Find the total for each row and for each column. Write each answer in 2 ways e.g. £1.99 and 199pChallenge 2For each of your 10 amounts in Challenge 1, work out the change from £10.00.Extension- For each amount of change, using the fewest possible notes and/or coins, list the notes and/or coins you would need.

1) Find the total of the whole grid.

What could buy from the corner shop with your money? How far will your money go? How many items can you buy?

Notes for ParentsSaturday 20th June 2020 is World Refugee day.

This year’s theme is ‘Imagine’. By imagining ourselves in others’ shoes it helps to build empathy and understanding. This week we are looking at life as a refugee child and asking ourselves ‘How can our kindness impact the lives of others?’

Refugee children in Britain are a diverse group. Some children may arrive in the UK with both parents; Some children arrive alone and unaccompanied, without a parent or carer.

Discuss with your child how they think a refugee child would feel to arrive in a strange new town and attend a school where they do not speak the language and cannot read the writing.

Ask- How can we show kindness to these children and their families?

If you wish to read a story about a refugee child as a family-The Boy at the Back of the Class is an award winning book. It can be found

Told with heart and humour, The Boy at the Back of the Class is a child's perspective on the refugee crisis, highlighting the importance of friendship and kindness in a world that doesn't always make sense.

Useful Information

Marking / Answers (Friday)Comprehension-When asked to give their opinion your child should explain using part of the text - I have included words from the text in the answer but the opinion will be your child’s own.1) The author feels ‘terrified’ and has had a frightening experience ‘My world has fallen apart around me’ and feels alone and surrounded by strangers. There isn't much sound, as though people have been shocked into silence or are lost in their thoughts. An atmosphere of fear is hanging in the air as though it can be heard ‘I hear the sound of fear loud and clear’. 2) The bombs are described as dropping ‘relentlessly’ and making loud ‘booms’ and causing the earth to tremble like and ‘earthquake’. 3) The teacher would not have known that school was a safe place as the bombs could have landed there too. If the rest of the village had been bombed, then it may be sensible to stay in place that hadn’t been hit, but that place could be next to be bombed . 4) Your opinion 5) Various answers could include; finding the family alive and safe, not finding their family or finding friends.Grammar investigation.1) Shards 2) relentlessly 3) impact 4) bombardment 5) flimsy
