The St. Louis Green Business Challenge, a joint program of the St. Louis Regional Chamber and the Missouri Botanical Garden, delivers “Triple Bottom Line” results (financial, social and environmental) to businesses across the St. Louis region. The Challenge supports integration of sustainability measures into the kinds of everyday operational practices common to every business – including assisting in the adoption of strategies that can improve financial performance, engaging employees and reducing environmental impact of their operations.

Since its inception in 2010, 150 companies, representing more than 125,000 employees have participated in the Challenge. 22 companies have joined the Challenge for for each of its five years.

About the Challenge The St. Louis Green Business Challenge allows companies of all types to engage in advancing sustainable business strategies in their business. It is open to owners and tenants of buildings; those new to the concept of sustainable business operations (called Acorns in Challenge lingo) and those who have integrated these concepts or are ready to fully integrate (called Oaks).

Unique to the St. Louis effort is the cooperation between the St. Louis Regional Chamber and the Missouri Botanical Garden. This partnership of the Chamber’s broad business network and the Garden’s sustainability knowledge has enabled the Challenge to spread across the business, educational, governmental, and non-profit sectors of the St. Louis regional economy. Challenge companies benefit from customized coaching, including site visits and ongoing phone and email support, provided by the expert staff of the EarthWays Center, the Missouri Botanical Garden’s sustainability division. This unique program element supports Challenge participants in evaluating and implementing Scorecard options in ways that optimize performance, cost-benefits, and engagement in accord with each company’s goals and culture.

Regular contact with all participants is maintained at monthly seminars where companies share their best practices, processes, and outcomes and learn new strategies. There are also green business tours, an annual Green Products EXPO, specialized presentations, and mentoring relationships to assist participating companies. An online resource bank archives examples of policies, surveys, communications tools, and best practices that are generously shared by Challenge participants. These frequent Challenge activities and regular communications foster a regional professional network of sustainability leaders.

Green Business Challenge LevelsChallenge Apprentices completed a menu of sustainability policies and options to start them on their path toward sustainable business operations. Apprentices formed green teams, completed sustainability policies, converted to recycled paper content for stationary, installed high efficiency lighting, and identified alternative transportation options. Apprentices met twice in a “Sustainability 101” session and a follow-up session where they met with Challenge Leaders and shared accomplishments.

Challenge Champions were companies who had completed the Leaders scorecard in past years and were ready to implement deeper sustainability strategies in their company. Champions worked off their own scorecard with strategies to complete a greenhouse gas survey, reduce energy by at least 25%, and strive to meet a 75% waste diversion rate. The Challenge Champions also completed the High Performance Building and Biodiversity strategies on the Leaders Scorecard.

Challenge Leaders completed a scorecard two times during the program year – once at the beginning to establish their baseline of operations and once at the end to identify strategies implemented within the year. Companies compete with themselves – trying to increase their overall score and achieve the greatest gain. From their baseline score, Leaders are grouped into Acorns and Oaks, and further classified as building owners or tenants. All participating companies are recognized each year, but special Awards of Merit are presented to those with the greatest gain in points from their baseline.

The Leaders Scorecard details a comprehensive range of sustainability strategies in an efficient checklist form. Each company earns points by acting on their selected strategies. Scorecard points are divided into sections to accomplish the following:

• Conduct outreach by expanding the reach of sustainability inside and outside the organization (green team, purchasing policies, external communications, community partnerships)

• Reduce energy (energy efficiency, lighting, renewable energy)

• Improve indoor environmental quality (temperature setting, air quality, green cleaning)

• Reduce waste (recycling, paper reduction, food service waste, disposables)

• Reduce water (water conservation, stormwater management)

• Provide clean transportation alternatives (carpooling, bike-to-work, transit, travel).

The formation of company Green Teams is a key strategy in guiding efficient, cost-effective engagement and success on the Scorecard. Employee engagement is encouraged by points possible in every section. Innovation Points recognize exemplary performance in Scorecard strategies and spotlight sustainability achievements specific to participants’ business specialties.

Two unique Leader and Champion Scorecard sections engage companies in special regional initiatives.

• The St. Louis High Performance Building Initiative is a regional project organized by the St. Louis Regional Chamber and the U.S. Green Building Council – Missouri Gateway Chapter to increase the square footage of third-party verified green space in the St. Louis region. This area encouraged companies to benchmark their buildings and to take the “25 x 20” pledge – a campaign to regionally reduce energy consumption 25% by 2020 using ENERGY STAR Benchmarking tools. Companies were awarded points for working in an ENERGY STAR, LEED, or Sustainable SITES campus.

• Better Business Through Biodiversity engages Leader and Champion companies with strategies to evaluate and improve factors affecting natural habitat, as contributors to BiodiverseCity St. Louis, a community-wide initiative to connect people to nature and to promote, protect, and plan for biodiversity throughout the region. Challenge participants were encouraged to analyze their property for biodiversity assets and better understand the impact the company has on habitats, plants, and animals.

Winning the Challenge

With the completion of each St. Louis Green Business Challenge program year, scorecards and case studies are submitted and points are tallied. Because of the vast amount of different types of businesses there are several award categories.

• Awards of Achievement – given to all participants who advanced in their efforts, including Apprentices (in certificate form) and Leaders (in plaque form) – for those achieving in the specialized levels below additional graphics are included:

o Circle of Excellence – awarded to all companies who achieved a score of at least 150 points – so noted with a circle in the upper right of their plaque.

o Star in the Circle of Excellence – awarded to all companies who achieved a minimum score of at least 250 points – so noted with a star in a circle in the upper right on their plaque.

o High Performance Building Initiative participant – noted on plaques with a building design added in the middle and text on the right for all companies participating in this advanced area.

o Better Business Through Biodiversity participant – noted on plaques with a vine added in the lower left and text on the right for all companies participating in this advanced area.

• Award of Merit – Awards of Merit are presented to the top finishers at the Champions and Leaders level. The Champions with the top three highest point totals on their scorecard earn Awards of Merit. Leaders receive Awards of Merit for the greatest gain in their respective groups (tenant/owner, acorn/oaks) and the top three of each group are recognized. These Awards of Merit note their category on the left center and the words ‘Greatest Gain’ to the right center of the plaque. These awards will also include graphics for the four specialized levels above if their companies achieved those areas as well.

o Award of Merit – Champion

o Award of Merit – Leader – Tenant Acorn

o Award of Merit – Leader – Tenant Oaks

o Award of Merit – Leader – Owner Acorn

o Award of Merit – Leader – Owner Oaks

ACCOMPLISHMENTS P Continuing to find new recycling opportunities for unusual materials

generated by employees at home, and in manufacturing or shipping. P Performed early-stage assessment of Boeing-owned outdoor

landscape, to identify biodiversity potential, including existing wetlands and wildlife habitat.

P Identified alternatives to a commonly ordered office supply that has high greenhouse gas potential.

INNOVATIONS P During a greenhouse gas emissions inventory, we

learned that a commonly used (“canned air”) air duster used to blow debris from computer keyboards and electronics contains a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC-134a) that has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 1300. This means it has 1300 times the greenhouse gas potential of carbon dioxide. A 10 ounce can of HFC-134a used is the equivalent of 0.4 metric tons of carbon dioxide emitted, and the St. Louis site was purchasing over 1000 cans a year.

P Two alternatives were identified and shared with other Boeing sites.

– A different canned air product uses R-152a propellant (1,1-difluoroethane). While this propellant is also a greenhouse gas, its GWP is 140, an order of magnitude less than products that use HFC-134a.

– A commercially available handheld air compressor was also identified, which uses no chemical propellant, and is powered by rechargeable batteries.

P Major Boeing sites around the country are identifying propellants in the canned air products used locally, and working with their suppliers and users to make preferred alternatives readily available.

“Innovation and technology are at the heart of what we do at Boeing, and they are fundamental to continual environmental improvement. As a company, we understand that environmental responsibility is crucial to our long-term success and our second century in business.”

“Sustainability is inextricably linked with our core missions of teaching, research and patient care. The Green Business Challenge provides a great platform to share best practices with the institutions, companies and organizations that are working to transform the region.”

-Henry S. Webber, Executive Vice Chancellor for Administration

ACCOMPLISHMENTS P Added 379 kw of solar to university-owned

property, in partnership with Microgrid Solar and Brightergy.

P The Lofts of Washington University on the Delmar Loop was certified LEED Platinum. Knight Hall / Bauer Hall and the McMillian Expansion projects both received LEED Gold certification, bringing the University’s total to 20 LEED certified projects, half of which are LEED Gold or Platinum.

P Hosted the 6-day Facilities Management Professional training at the School of Medicine, including key themes of resource conservation. Over 80 staff members from the two major campuses received their FMP certification – more than any other institution.

P Diverted 21,352,277 lbs of material from the landfill in FY14 through expanding composting program in partnership with dining and custodial teams; transforming our largest annual events to near-zero waste events, including Commencement, WILD, Convocation, WUSM Staff Appreciation Day, and Danforth Staff Day.

P Created Green Ambassadors: 30 students engaged in hundreds of hours of peer-to-peer education and outreach during orientation and the first month of classes, establishing a strong culture of sustainability from day one.

INNOVATIONS P Rehabbed two 100-year-old

multi-family buildings with one as control and a second as a deep green experimental rehab with the goal of net zero energy.

P Developed a new interdisciplinary, hands-on Sustainability Exchange course for students to engage in complex real world problem-solving.

P The Danforth Campus installed the first two “bike boxes” in the region at the Danforth Campus. Bike boxes are intersection roadway markings that give cyclists priority and increase safety.

P Installed card-activated switches to setback HVAC systems and reduce unoccupied mode energy usage within the LEED Platinum Lofts of Washington University.
