What is a Mapathon

Mapathon is a mapping event in which the participants contribute to OpenStreetMap. The goal of a mapathon is to add features to OSM to increase the digital footprint of an area.

Tasks are divided among the participants. Both indoor and outdoor tools are used. Participants are encouraged to bring a computer, phone or a notebook. All skill levels are welcome. On the spot training is provided.

GISdayGISday

31

• It is an USGIF initiative for people to learn about geography and the uses of GIS; it’s a grassroots effort and open to everyone to participate

• USGIF provides exhibits (such as the Giant Map), GEOINT 101 presentations, as well as numerous other geospatial resources to K-12 educational institutions

• The USGIF “GEOINT 101” presentation is designed to support STEM/GEOINT outreach activities supporting K-12. The presentation is targeted for grades 5-8. The presentation includes a history of mapping/aerial imagery, basic mapping reading skills, and basics on satellites, tools, and GEOINT careers.

• This year, USGIF revised the Intro to GEOINT to include videos and other GEOINT topics not previously mentioned.

What the SLAWG can doWhat the SLAWG can do

32

• USGIF would like to build on last year’s GIS Day but make it a nationwide effort! They are encouraging participation from USGIF working group members and USGIF Individual Members to take this presentation to a school. • Select a school in the great St. Louis or surrounding areas and work

with the principal/teacher to give the Intro to GEOINT presentation on a day during USGIF’s GEOINT Community Week/Geography Awareness Week (Nov. 13-17)

• USGIF will provide the presentation to the presenter in a Dropbox link. The presentation will also come with a “lesson plan” in a PDF and in the notes section of each slide so presenters know the information that corresponds with the images on the slides.

• Ask your school organizations if you can provide some giveaways to the students following the presentation

• Provide the SLAWG and USGIF feedback on the presentation, feedback from the teacher/class (content, comments/reactions), name of the school, number of students, grade level, etc.

• USGIF will publish an announcement following the event.

GEOPlunge TournamentGEOPlunge Tournament

33

• GeoPlunge Tournament is Easy-to-Play Educational US Geography Games. GeoPlunge offers a great way for my children to learn without the feeling of being taught. It can be played at school or at home, allowing children to gain critical thinking skills as well as gaining knowledge about the United States.
