While the results overall from St Leonards showed some pleasing trends as well as identifying areas for improvement, it should be stated that this test is only one part of a child's overall education. While there is no doubt both literacy and numeracy, the skills tested in NAPLAN, are vital in a student’s development, there are many other areas that jobs of the future will need. These include 21st- century skills such as collaboration, creativity and problem solving. Examples of these skills are part of the Australian Curriculum and are called the general capabilities. The capabilities include Literacy, Numeracy, Information and Communication Technology, Critical and Creative Thinking, Personal and Social Capability and Ethical Understanding and Intercultural Understanding The general capabilities encompass the knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions that, together with curriculum content in each learning area and the cross-curriculum priorities, will assist students to live and work successfully in the 21st century. They ensure that children have a strong sense of identity and wellbeing, are connected with and contribute to their world, are confident and involved learners and are effective communicators. The teachers at St Leonards are well versed in these areas and strive to continuously develop and educate students for life in the 21 st Century. Book Week Last Friday’s dress up day was a fantastic day of celebration for our entire school. It was tremendous to see so many students dressed as their favourite character, some very historical fashions and some new and trendy ones. Students were excited all day in anticipation of the grand parade at assembly. Staff also joined in the fun and added to the fun. Congratulations to Sonya and support staff for the organisation and the extra work to make it happen. Thank you to our parents for putting in the effort to help make a great event. • SLPS Bullying Preference Survey 2015 We have recently conducted our annual survey based upon assessing the student’s views towards bullying and playground behaviour at St Leonards. The questionnaire contained twenty individual items covering three areas. The tendency of the student towards:

    Being a bully

    Being a victim

    Acting in a pro-social manner in support of others.

    The resulting scale provides a weighted average for each key area. (Never 0 -1, Once in a while 1-2, Pretty often 2-3, Very often 3-4) The questions were presented in a ‘mixed manner’ and then collated together to provide an indication of the whole school picture.

    Weighted Average: Tendency Figures

    2014 2015 Trend

    Bully = 1.02 1.02 unchanged

    Victim = 1.88 1.48 down

    Pro-Social = 3.29 2.93 down

    The results for 2015 survey reflect well upon the school’s programs, with a very low tendency to bully indicated. The tendency towards ’being a victim’ was also low and has dropped since last year. The very pleasing aspect of the survey was that the pro-social tendency (helping others) continues to be high, although slightly lower than last year. During Terms 2 and 3 we have collected the students’ thoughts on what they would like to see available at recess and lunchtime (this builds on a similar exercise last year). Student class representatives held discussions in class seeking the input of the student group and these ideas were then filtered through the Student Representative Council and will be used to inform future actions in this area.

    These actions build upon the improvements to the playground areas and the provision of alternative clubs, materials and activities at recess and lunch, particularly successful recent additions have been the Lego Club, Minecraft Group and sand play areas.

    If you are able to offer any other opportunities or suggestions to improve the student’s experiences at recess and lunch, please email us with your thoughts. Graeme Smith, Wellbeing Coordinator

    Year 6/7 Excursion to the Magistrates Court

    On Monday, 17 August, Room 11 and 12 went on an excursion to the Art Gallery and Magistrates Courts. In the Art Gallery we saw some amazing art pieces. There was one piece of art where there were two horses stitched together hanging from the roof. After the Art Gallery we walked to the Magistrates Court. When we arrived we waited outside for Peter (the guide). When we came inside we had to walk through a metal detector then we walked to the court room for some role playing. It was so much fun! We also got to watch some real court cases in action.

    It was one of the best excursions we have had so far.
