Our Lady of the Rosary
(October 7)
October is the month traditionally dedicated to the Rosary. The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, once called Our Lady of Victory, is
celebrated on October 7th.
The feast of Our Lady of Victory was established in 1573 to thank God for the victory against the Ottoman Turks in the battle of Lepanto. Before the battle, the
Christian army prayed the Rosary and attended Mass.
The mysteries of the Rosary take us through the whole range of human experiences in the light of Christ, from joy to sorrow, to death to risen life. Indeed, the Rosary is many things at once: it uses simple prayers but invites profound meditation; it involves words and tactile beads; it is very old yet always fresh; Biblical in both explicit and implicit
ways; to be said alone or together in the family or religious community; a prayer for the church, the home, or the road.
The Rosary contains four sets of mysteries which tell the whole story of the life of Christ from His
conception to the triumph of heaven.
The Joyful Mysteries include the Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin, the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin to Elizabeth, the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the
Presentation of Our Lord in the Temple, and the Finding of the Child Jesus in the Temple.
The Luminous Mysteries include the Baptism of the Lord in the Jordan, the Wedding Feast at Cana, the Proclamation of the Kingdom of God, the Transfiguration of the Lord on
Mount Tabor, and the Institution of the Eucharist.
The Sorrowful Mysteries include the Agony of Our Lord in the Garden of Gethsemane, the Scourging of Our Lord at the Pillar, the Crowing of Our Lord with Thorns, the
Carrying of the Cross to Calvary, and the Crucifixion and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
The Glorious Mysteries include the Resurrection of Our Lord on Easter, the Ascension of Our Lord, the Descent of
the Holy Spirit on the Apostles and the Blessed Virgin at Pentecost, the Assumption of the Blessed
Virgin Mary into heaven, and the Crowing of Our Lady as Queen of Heaven and Earth.
Within the Rosary, we see the whole of the life of Christ and can meditate on how we can imitate this in our lives.
