When we think of the word “Beatitude” we think of today’s dis-course from Luke’s Gospel, or the more familiar one from Mat-thew (which begins “Blessed are the poor in spirit . . . ”). Actually, beatitudes occur throughout the prophets and Gospels. Today in Jeremiah (with an echo in the psalm) we hear, “Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord” (Jeremiah 17:7). Following his resurrection in John’s Gospel, Christ proclaims, “Blessed are those who have not seen and have be-lieved” (John 20:29). The evangelists placed these sayings throughout the Gospels as short reminders about the character-istics that one will find in a follower of Christ, characteristics that will help spread the Good News in this life and lead to eter-nal blessings in the next. In Latin, the saints are called the Beati, the “Blessed,” for they are the ones who lived the “blessed” life as described by Jesus throughout the Gospels. How blest are we, when we also strive to make our own days a living beatitude!

CELEBRATING MASS IN SILENCE In recent years, there has been re-markable progress in drawing persons with disabilities into full celebration. Now it is generally accepted that worship plac-es need accommodations such as ramps or elevators, large-print materials for those who are sight-impaired, and perhaps even an assisted hearing system or signing in American Sign Language. American Sign Language is not merely English translat-ed into movement, but a distinct language with its own grammar, syntax (word or-der), and vocabulary. For this reason, the American Catholic bishops have approved American Sign Language (ASL) as an official language of the liturgy. Celebrating liturgy in our own lan-guage (the vernacular) means that liturgy must be accessible to all languages and cultures. The fact that Mass is celebrated this weekend in some places in total si-lence, but with the full participation of deaf people praising God in the move-ments of their hands, and sometimes even with a priest who is deaf, is nothing less than the Church being faithful to the im-age of Jesus, who made the deaf hear and the mute speak. Remember too that deaf-ness is an invisible disability, and that there may well be people in your parish who are quietly yearning for Mass to be signed for them in ASL.—James Field

In union with Christ’s passion,

We offer up as sacrifice upon the fleshy Altars

of our hearts all that we lack.

In return we receive

from on high The fullness of Christ’s body, blood, soul and

Divinity in the Eucharist, and we see

The Word become flesh in our own lives.

Amen

Question of the Week: How can I change the way I live my life in accordance with the Beatitudes? What can I do to re-ceive the blessings of God and to help others receive those blessings as well?

Please join St. Lawrence Community in prayer for vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Let us pray together for our

seminarians.

Lord Jesus, eternal High Priest, grant these seminarians the wisdom and grace

they need in their formation. Help them to grow in holiness and integrity

for service to your people as their future priests. Guide them in their studies, deepen their life of prayer,

and sustain them in the difficult moments they face. Through the intercession of

Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Anthony of Padua, we entrust these men to you,

who live and reign with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, on God,

forever and ever. Amen.

con integridad y generosidad. Te pedimos que los guíes en sus estudios;

Amen.

On behalf of Archbishop Gustavo and Father Jose, we invite you and your family to serve our Catholic community by participating in the 2019 Annual Archbishop’s Appeal, Encounter: Live in Faith, Give in Love. Your prayers and gifts serve all of us by raising up our next gen-eration of priests and deacons, providing sound catechesis and Catho-lic education for our children, bringing the sacraments to the hospital-ized and homebound, broadcasting the Mass and other faith-filled pro-gramming to thousands, and bringing Christ’s mercy as it feeds, clothes, shelters, and cares for the most vulnerable. If you have already responded to the Archbishop’s letter sent to your home, thank you! If you have not yet had an opportunity to respond to this year’s Appeal, please prayerfully consider how to renew your gift, or make one for the first time. Pledge envelopes and pencils are avail-able in the pews. Once completed, place your envelope in the offertory during Mass. You may also make your gift online at www.archsa.org/archbishops-appeal, or by calling the Office of the Archbishop’s Ap-peal at 210-734-1604. Thank you for your prayers and generosity. May God continue to bless you!
