YEAR FIVE NEWS

We are now nearing the end of Term Four and the school year is coming close to an end.

It has been a rather hectic but enjoyable eight weeks of this Term, with some of the key Year Five highlights being our Assembly item in Week Two and our Leadership Day in Week Seven.

Our assembly item focused on the theme of ‘Fairytales’, we performed a Rumpelstiltskin poem and play; and recited some Fairytale character limericks we composed in Writing.

Our Leadership Day gave us the opportunity to explore the qualities of a good leader and informed us of the duties that the Year Six Committee Leader roles entail. We feel inspired and prepared for the challenges that lay ahead of as we aspire to becoming the student leaders of the school community in 2018. On Monday afternoon we presented our Leadership speeches to the Years Three – Six students for the roles we nominated for and now we look forward to finding out whether we have been successful. It is going to be an anxious wait to see who our new leaders are going to be… bring on Week Nine, when we find out this exciting news!

Aside from these two events, we have been very busy working hard in our classroom on various activities in the key learning areas. Some of the things we have been working on have included…

In Mathematics, we have been exploring the concepts of area and perimeter in Measurement and Geometry; and in Statistics and Probability we have been interpreting various types of graphs such as double bar graphs, pie graphs, line graphs and tables. We are getting very good at identifying trends in data and using these trends to predict possible data results for the future.

In Religion, we have been exploring how we can live like Jesus and demonstrate the good qualities of honesty, compassion, courage and kindness in our daily lives. We have looked at ways people can lead good lives as they are strengthened by Jesus through the Eucharist. We will finish this term by exploring the season of Advent and sharing in the joy and peace of this special time of the year.

In English, we have been writing our own fractured fairytales. Fractured fairytales are creative narratives based on well-known and popular fairytales. We are currently busy making our fairytales into picture books and will share them with our Year One buddies in the last week of the school term. In preparation for our Leadership speeches, we explored the elements and devices used in a well-structured and persuasive speech. We tried hard to use these devices in our own speeches so we could encourage members of our student body to vote for us at the Year Six Committee Leader Elections. Stay tuned for the outcome!

In Integrated Studies we have continued working on our Economics and Business unit in HASS. We have learnt the difference between natural, capital and human resources; and explored the various types of resources used in both our school community and the dairy industry. It has been rather interesting exploring how many resources are used in each of these enterprises.

In Design Technology we market researched, planned, created and appraised a Melbourne Cup Hat for a peer to wear. This was a very enjoyable process… everyone was happy with their finished product; and we all thoroughly enjoyed wearing our peer-made hats on Melbourne Cup Day whilst watching this ‘race that stops a nation!’.

To finish our update, we would like to share some of the highlights of our year in Year Five with Mrs. Renton. We have all had a fabulous time and although we are sad that our year is ending, we are excited about Year Six; when we become the student leaders at St. Jude’s.

Just quietly… Mrs. Renton thinks we are going to make amazing leaders, we think so too!

Mrs Renton and the Year Five Team.
