AdventPreparing for Christ
The Story
The Liturgy
“The Church, especially
during Advent and Lent
and above all at the
Easter Vigil, re-reads and
re-lives the great events
of salvation history in the
‘today’ of her liturgy.”
(CCC 1094)
The Meaning of Advent
“When the Church celebrates
the liturgy of Advent each
year, she makes present this
ancient expectancy of the
messiah…
For by sharing in the long
preparation for the Savior’s
first coming, the faithful renew
their ardent desire for his
second coming.” (CCC, 524)
John the Baptist
“He must increase, I must decrease.”- (John 3:30)
The last of the prophets and the
greatest. (CCC, 523)
He prepares us to receive
Jesus.
“Repent, for the kingdom of God is at hand.”- (Matthew 3:2)
Mary“For the first time in the plan of salvation and
because his Spirit had prepared her, the Father
found [in Mary] the dwelling place where his
Son and his Spirit could dwell among men.”
(CCC, 721)
“I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me
according to your word.”- Luke 1:38
“Mary kept all these things, pondering them in
her heart.”
- Luke 2:19

AdventAWAITING THE SAVIOR OF THE WORLD
What is
Advent?
Advent – From Latin ‘adventus’ meaning ‘a coming, approach, arrival’
It is 4-week period before Christmas where we await the coming of Jesus, the Savior of the World.
Advent has two focuses: The coming of Baby Jesus in the manger, and the coming of Jesus, the Savior in His second coming.
What the
Catechism
says:
“When the Church celebrates the liturgy of Advent each year, she makes present this ancient expectancy of the Messiah, for by sharing in the long preparation for the Savior's first coming, the faithful renew their ardent desire for his second coming.200 By celebrating the precursor's birth and martyrdom, the Church unites herself to his desire: "He must increase, but I must decrease.” (CCC 524)
What Child is This? Silent Night
1. What Child is this who, laid to restOn Mary's lap is sleeping?Whom Angels greet with anthems sweet,While shepherds watch are keeping?
This, this is Christ the King,Whom shepherds guard and Angels sing;Haste, haste, to bring Him laud,The Babe, the Son of Mary.
2. Why lies He in such mean estate,Where ox and ass are feeding?Good Christians, fear, for sinners hereThe silent Word is pleading.
Nails, spear shall pierce Him through,The cross be borne for me, for you.Hail, hail the Word made flesh,The Babe, the Son of Mary.
3. So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh,Come peasant, king to own Him;The King of kings salvation brings,Let loving hearts enthrone Him.
Raise, raise a song on high,The Virgin sings her lullaby.Joy, joy for Christ is born,The Babe, the Son of Mary.
Silent night, holy nightAll is calm, all is bright
'Round yon virgin Mother and Child
Holy infant so tender and mildSleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
Silent night, holy night!Shepherds quake at the sight!
Glories stream from heaven afar;
Heavenly hosts sing Al-le-lu-ia!
Christ the Savior is born!
Christ the Savior is born!
Christ the Savior is born!
Silent night, holy night
Son of God, oh, love's pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth
