SACRED SCRIPTURECorrect interpretation depends on extensive knowledge of the

culture at the time, and the style and literary genre being used

by the writer. It requires understanding of the original

language used. Scripture is written in multiple literary genres

and three languages, Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek.

The Magisterium interprets and reveals the meaning of

Sacred Scripture.

The Advocate, the Holy Spirit that the Father will send

in my name, will teach you everything and remind you

of all I told you.

3-FOLD MISSION

The Magisterium teaches only truths handed down to us from the Apostles.

Teach

– Attend Mass on all Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation.

– Confess our sins at least once a year.

– Receive the Eucharist during the Easter season.

– Observe the Church’s days of fasting and abstinence.

– Help provide for the needs of the Church.

DOGMA EXAMPLES

• The dead will rise again on the last day

with their bodies.

Divine Revelation• In His goodness and wisdom God chose to

reveal Himself and to make known to us the hidden purpose of His will (see Eph. 1:9) by which through Christ, the Word made flesh, man might in the Holy Spirit have access to the Father and come to share in the divine nature (see Eph. 2:18; 2 Peter 1:4). Dei Verbum

• CCC 51 "It pleased God, in his goodness and wisdom, to reveal himself and to make known the mystery of his will. His will was that men should have access to the Father, through Christ, the Word made flesh, in the Holy Spirit, and thus become sharers in the divine nature.“ Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC)

Deposit of Faith• The Catholic Church defines the "Deposit of

Faith" as the teachings of the Catholic Church that are handed down since the time of the Apostles through Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition. These two are known as the "Deposit of Faith.

• It is clear, therefore, that Sacred Tradition, Sacred Scripture and the teaching authority of the Church, in accord with God's most wise design, are so linked and joined together that one cannot stand without the others, and that all together and each in its own way under the action of the one Holy Spirit contribute effectively to the salvation of souls. Dei Verbum

• 2 Tim 1:14 - By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.

Sacred Scripture• The books of both the Old and New Testaments in

their entirety are sacred because written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, they have God as their author and have been handed on as such to the Church herself.

• Bible reading is for Catholics. The Church encourages Catholics to make reading the Bible part of their daily prayer lives. Reading these inspired words, people grow deeper in their relationship with God and come to understand their place in the community God has called them to.

• Reading isn't enough. If Scripture remains just words on a page, our work is not done. We need to meditate on the message and put it into action in our lives. Only then can the word be "living and effective."(Hebrews 4:12).

• 2 Tim. 3:16-17 - All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

Sacred Tradition• Sacred Tradition comes from Christ. It’s the

full, living gift of Christ to the Apostles, faithfully handed down through each generation.

• Orally by the apostles who handed on, by the spoken word of their preaching, by the example they gave, by the institutions they established, what they themselves had received - whether from the lips of Christ, from his way of life and his works, or whether they had learned it at the prompting of the Holy Spirit.

• In writing by those apostles and other men associated with the apostles who, under the inspiration of the same Holy Spirit, committed the message of salvation to writing.

Sacred Tradition• Examples – Jesus is both human and

divine, Pope is Vicar (representative of Christ), Celebration of the Eucharist as center of Christian life. Christ is truly present in the Eucharist, Immaculate Conception of Mary.

• 2 Thess. 2:15 - Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours.

Magisterium• The magisterium of the Catholic Church is

the church's authority or office to give authentic interpretation of the Word of God, "whether in its written form or in the form of Tradition.“
