COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE LITERACY AND NUMERACY WEEK Next week from 27th August to 2nd September is National Literacy and Numeracy week. During the week teachers will be focusing more on these fundamental skills for learning and life. Special activities include spelling bees, use of educational literacy and numeracy iPad applications, crossword, word target and Sudoku puzzle competitions. The best tool for improving verbal and written literacy is reading. Regular reading improves expression, vocabulary, punctuation and spelling while increasing understanding and self-confidence. Given the importance of regular reading, one of the greatest gifts a parent can give a child is a love of reading by giving them incentives to read daily. Parents can help their children discover what they like reading most, be it science fiction, crime, romance, non-fiction, biographies, autobiographies, or even magazines. Our schools have great libraries with a wide range of reading material covering all these areas of interest. We also have town libraries that are well stocked with books. COMMEMORATIVE SERVICE SPEECH Alana Burton, the Captain at St Joseph’s Regional College delivered a speech at the commemorative service last Saturday on the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. Mr Ian Lutton assisted Alana with the writing of the speech for the occasion. The following excerpts capture the main theme of a great speech for the occasion. As we gather here today to commemorate Vietnam Veterans Day and the Battle of Long Tan Commemorative Service it is poignant to remember that this year marks the 50th anniversary of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War. What started out as a small scale commitment of 30 military advisors in 1962 rapidly escalated to a major military commitment with over 60,000 Australian’s serving in Vietnam. At the height of our involvement over 8,000 soldiers, sailors and air force personnel were in theatre before our eventual withdrawal of all forces in 1972. This 10 year commitment was to come at a tragic cost of 521 Australians killed, over 3,000 wounded and veterans returning to a divided and confused country. Yet as we gather here today and look back we reflect on a continuation of that proud Anzac tradition that was established on the shores of Gallipoli, cemented in the mud and sacrifice of the Western Front. It was this tradition that was continued by the sons of the Anzacs in North Africa, - places such as Tobruk, El Alamein and Kokoda embedded in Australia’s memory and the heroics displayed at Kapyong by Australian soldiers during the Korean War. It was this proud tradition that all those who served in Vietnam so wonderfully upheld and which was personified by the actions of those involved in the Battle of Long Tan on this day in 1966.

Page 3: St Joseph's Regional College Newsletter 24th August 2012

Yet the Battle itself like many other engagements in military history unfolded in a manner that neither side could predict and was to form part of the folk lore of the battle itself. The main area of focus for the Australians in the lead up to the 18th was the concert that was to happen in the afternoon at the Task Force at Nui Dat. Early on the morning of the 17th at 2.30am the Task Force came under a mortar attack and as per normal procedures, bearings were taken and artillery fire returned and the attackers fell silent. In typical aggressive Australian fashion a patrol was sent out the next morning to follow up on the enemy attack and to ensure that any attempt to mortar the Australian base would always elicit a strong response. At 10.30am on the morning of the 18th as other soldiers at the Task Force were readying themselves for the concert in the afternoon and the luxury of a few cold beers and a steak sandwich 108 men including 3 Kiwi soldiers from D Company 6 RAR under the command of Major Harry Smith were sent out to relieve B Company and to follow up the search for the enemy mortar crew. As the men of D Company approached the outskirts of a rubber plantation at 3.40 in the afternoon an initial skirmish began when 6 enemy soldiers walked into one of the lead platoons. With a quick follow up of the initial contact the lead platoon under Lieutenant Gordon Sharp stumbled across a large enemy force later estimated to consist of two North Vietnamese divisions and over 2,500 men and the Battle of Long Tan will begin. Over the next few hours the men of D Company faced wave after wave of enemy assaults yet were able to withstand and achieved a remarkable victory that day…. …When Major Harry Smith first prepared his company for deployment to Vietnam, in his words, he “demanded a high standard of discipline and teamwork which I believed inspired mateship, loyalty, and confidence in individual and unit ability to perform under pressure.” It is these simple words that I believe is the true message from Long Tan. The mateship, loyalty and confidence in each other helped them overcome seemingly impossible odds. And it is these great qualities that we admire so greatly, not just in those present on that fateful day but in all those who served throughout those ten years. Be it the regular soldier who served or the National Servicemen whose life was uprooted for two years and then expected to return to a normal civilian life. Yet as I look around today and see veterans from different generations I still see those great qualities of mateship, loyalty and faith in those who you served with. As a young person specifically and society generally we seek comfort from the example of your heroics and commitment in the face of great adversity and I firmly believe that the legend that was created on the shores of Gallipoli in 1915 and has been superbly upheld by many generations of Australian servicemen and women subsequently has shaped the way we as fellow Australians have hoped to conduct our lives. I believe the selflessness of fellow Australians in time of crisis such as the Queensland floods last year when ordinary people were prepared to help their fellow neighbour or a complete stranger in many ways has its origins in those qualities espoused by you here before us of mateship, loyalty and a belief to support each other…. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

HSC CREATIVE ARTS FESTIVAL Congratulations to all Year 12 Art, Drama and Music students and teachers on an amazing display of talent and creativity. I sincerely congratulate the teachers Mrs Tracy Pares (Art), Mrs Anne Twomey (Drama) and Mrs Leanne Johnson (Music) on these wonderful displays and performances on show at the HSC Creative Arts Festival last Wednesday and Wednesday evening. Mrs Claudette Stace is the Creative Arts coordinator and her leadership sets a great tone for this department. It certainly was a wonderful display of talent, and a very fitting culmination of a huge amount of hard work and dedication from both the students and their teachers. An enormous number of hours are required outside of normal school time to be able to present the standard shown by these students. All credit to them for their work ethic and my sincere appreciation to the staff who lead and inspire the students. I am in awe of their professionalism. HSC PRACTICAL MARKING Markers from the Board of Studies will be here to mark the practical works from these three subjects as the dates are given to us we will be publishing them. Drama Performances: 31st August 2012 Music Performances: 12th September 2012 We have yet to be notified of a date for Visual Arts marking YEAR 12 RETURNED TO CLASSES On Tuesday, 14th August our Year 12 students returned to normal classes, having completed their Trial HSC exams. They now have approximately five weeks of classes during which they should be working closely with their teachers on revision and consolidation of HSC work. I would stress that REGULAR ATTENDANCE AT SCHOOL IS ESSENTIAL if students are to benefit from the revision programs developed by their teachers. All teachers have set plans in place to optimise this time and it is an absolute disadvantage to a student if they do not use this time wisely. HOMEWORK HUB FOR SENIORS The opportunity for students to have supervised study outside of school hours has always been available at the College. The Library is open every morning from 7.30am and the Senior Study is open every afternoon until 4.30pm. This is certainly a great opportunity for our seniors to assist them as they do assessments, complete homework and prepare for exams in a quiet, supervised environment. As Year 12 return after the trials we have decided to extend this opportunity and create a “Homework Hub” for senior students. All senior students are invited to stay after school and work in a quiet, supervised environment which is conducive to study. Afternoon tea will be provided and the study centre will now remain open until 5.00pm on a Tuesday and Thursday.

LOST PROPERTY A reminder to students who have lost a phone, jewel lery (including gold rings and bracelets) or a watch this year, would you please see Mrs Will iams in the office.

FROM THE CURRICULUM COORDINATOR YEAR 11 DISCONTINUING SUBJECTS Mrs Eichmann has already discussed the options available to Year 11 students’ pattern of study for the HSC course. As these can be difficult decisions it has been decided that each student will have a brief individual meeting with a KLA coordinator to discuss their options and answer any concerns. These meetings will occur at various times next week.

While it is important to know about students wishing to take up a new course or level of study, there is no rush to discontinue or “drop” a subject. Student may wish to see their final grades for the Preliminary Course or wait until there have experienced some of the HSC course. It is possible to discontinue a course up until this time next year if you still meet the other unit requirements for the HSC.

It is also essential that students continue to try in ALL their Preliminary Courses until the end of the term.

RYLEY SHARES HIS INSPIRATIONAL STORY

Last Wednesday, Paralympic wheelchair rugby player, and Port Macquarie local, Ryley Batt, visited his former high school, St Joseph’s Regional College, to share his inspirational story with students. Ryley, who was born with no legs and only two fingers on each hand, has been playing wheelchair rugby since the age of 12 and has since gone on to achieve some outstanding statistics. By 13 he was in the Australian National Team and at 15 Ryley became the youngest ever wheelchair rugby Paralympian. Ryley shared his journey from being a young child who hated the idea of using a wheelchair (because he felt they were only for disabled people) to winning silver with the Australian wheelchair rugby team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Students were in awe after seeing footage of Ryley in action, with many hoping to have the opportunity to have a go at wheelchair rugby themselves. Ryley is now looking forward to the London Paralympics, where he hopes to go one better than Beijing and bring home the gold. TOURNAMENT OF MINDS This Saturday sees fourteen students representing the College in the Tournament of Minds held at Westport High School. This year the College has one team in the Language Literature section and one team in the Social Science section of the Tournament. The students have been preparing their Long Term Challenge for some weeks; they have been writing scripts, learning lines, making costumes and props and learning how best to work in a group. They have also been preparing for the Spontaneous Challenge which will be sited for the first time on tournament day. I would like to wish the following students all the best for Saturday. Language Literature : Caine Wilkins, Naomi Langley, Emily Sheridan, Rebecca Lakis, Alex Lyons, Damien Hudson and Courtney Newell. Social Science : Chris Treeves, Emily Nardella, Jessica Rogers, Holly Fyffe, Hannah Morson, Paige Dyson and Shonia Poole. I would also like to thank Leisa Nardella and Katrina Wills for their assistance. Janine Handley Learning Enrichment Coordinator

LITERACY /NUMERACY WEEK

National Literacy and Numeracy Week highlights the importance of literacy and numeracy skills for all children and young people, with a specific focus on school-aged children. The Week gives schools the opportunity to be involved in a range of literacy and numeracy activities. At St Joseph’s Regional College our year 7 and 8 mathematics students will be doing a

number of numeracy activities based on a reading book. Each child will need to bring in a reading book from home that they no longer need. At the conclusion of the activity all novels will be placed on a table in the classroom and a book swap will occur. Children are also asked to bring in a gold coin to ‘buy’ a book and all proceeds will go to the Aboriginal Literacy Foundation. The Aboriginal Literacy Foundation provides weekly one-on-one literacy tutoring to Indigenous children struggling to make literacy gains at school. The foundation provides Indigenous Literacy and Heritage Camps to fast track literacy and numeracy learning for significantly disadvantaged students. The Foundation also supplies books and literacy backpacks to children in remote communities to encourage them in their educational journey. The English classes will watch Aaron Blabey read his book Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley , a beautiful picture book that explores the themes of friendship, courage, self-belief, being different

Page 8: St Joseph's Regional College Newsletter 24th August 2012

and happiness. They will then develop a six word story based on one of the themes which will be accompanied by a visual. In the 1920s, Ernest Hemingway’s colleagues bet him that he couldn’t write a complete story in just six words. They paid up. Hemingway is said to have considered it his best work. “For sale: baby shoes, never used.” Who knows we may have some budding Hemingways at St Joseph’s Regional College. LIBRARY NEWS PARENT LIBRARY

Our College Library houses numerous titles which have been purchased or donated for use by parents. The Diocese of Lismore Catholic Schools Parent Assembly has kindly donated many of these, and this week, we present a review of one of them. Please contact Library staff if you would like to borrow this, or indeed any of the forthcoming reviewed titles. “Amazing Grace for Families : 101 stories of faith, hope, inspiration and humour” is the focus book for this week from the Parent Library. This book explores the notion of purpose for family, the way that love defines a family, and it contains heart-warming stories.

Contact Library staff to arrange to borrow this item. CHILDRENS’ BOOK WEEK 2012 – “CHAMPIONS READ” This week we celebrated Childrens’ Book Week, with the theme of “Champions Read”. Mr Peter Besseling was our guest on Thursday, outlining to an attentive audience his reading loves and habits throughout his life, followed by a celebratory sausage sizzle. Photos from the day will be included in next week’s newsletter, and we thank Mr Besseling for his generosity in sharing with our students. What were the short-listed and winning books in 2012? We have created a Pinterest board which contains a visual record of the book-covers, and allows others to comment. REGIONAL COLLEGE SPORTS WRAP GIRLS TUESDAY NIGHT VOLLEYBALL

Term 3 volleyball is well and truly up and running

with 5 teams playing on Tuesday evenings. The

overall quality of play has improved thanks to Mr

Jennings and his coaching during Tuesday sport

and the efforts of Emmanuel Kafantaris last term

with the Year 9 team. Special thanks to Sandi and

Emmanuel Kafantaris from ARB 4X4 Accessories

Port Macquarie for their extremely generous shirt

sponsorship of all our teams.

I would like to remind players that it cost $35 per team to play each night. Individuals are charged

$5 each week and teams add or subtract to their team funds based on the number of players

each week. In the past I have allowed players who forgot their money to pay the following week.

Unfortunately too many players are doing this and some are simply not paying up from previous

weeks. Some teams never have the minimum 7 players required to cover match payments.

Some teams are already in the red (owe money). I will be giving out accounts for those

players/teams who need to catch up next week. If you are not good at remembering to bring

money then you can always pay up in advance. You only need to pay if you play, but remember

your team will also be short of money for that week. If accounts are not finalised then these

teams will be withdrawn from the competition.
