COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE BIKE RIDE AROUND AUSTRALIA FOR MOTOR NEURONE DISEAS E

Earlier this year the long-serving Assistant Principal of St John’s College, Woodlawn, Kim Evans resigned his position and set out on a charity bike ride around Australia. In riding the 15,500 kilometres his goal is to raise $1m for research into Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

Motor Neurone Disease is the name given to a group of diseases in which the nerve cells (neurones) controlling the muscles that enable us to move around, speak, swallow and breathe fail to work normally. With no nerves to activate them the muscles gradually weaken and waste. The pattern of weakness and rate of progression vary from person to person. The average life expectancy is just two to three years from diagnosis.

MND affects approximately 1500 people in Australia. It also impacts on thousands more including family, carers and friends whose lives are also impacted. On average every day in Australia at least one person dies from MND and another is diagnosed. Typically, those diagnosed have led healthy, active lives prior to diagnosis.

Like so many others, Kim Evan’s life was impacted by MND when his brother-in-law and former work colleague was diagnosed. Bob Delaney had been an outstanding sportsman and had remained extremely active throughout his life. He was also a highly regarded high school teacher with a young family when diagnosed.

The lives of several families in our local community have also been impacted by family members who have had MND. Statistics show that others have their lives torn apart by this frightening, degenerative condition.

So that a cure can be found we are calling on the Port Macquarie-Hastings community to support a fundraising event planned for Monday, 28 th October to coincide with Kim Evans’ stay-over in Port Macquarie.

A barbeque will be held at the Parish Hub, Horton Street commencing at 6pm. The cost is just $35 per head for food and two drinks. A raffle with great prizes will be held on the night.

We look forward to support from our school and local community and especially from Woodlawn Old Boys who were taught by Kim Evans and Bob Delaney.

Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal SAPSS

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

HSC Commences

This week our Year 12 students commenced their Higher School Certificate Examinations. I would ask that you continue to pray for them during this time.

Opportunities for Spiritual Growth at St Joseph’s R egional College

I firmly believe that young people who are given the opportunity to ask the important questions in relation to their relationship with God benefit considerably in their overall formation in our contemporary world. This week I would like to extend my thanks to our Leader of Evangelisation and Catechesis, Ms Nora Swain , Assistant Leader of Evangelisation, Mrs Helen Gilbert , our Ministry Trainee, Ms Jasmin Ryan and College Chaplain, Fr. James Foster for affording students with the chance to: attend Festa Christi at Bonville Coffs Harbour or experience Homelessness first-hand with our upcoming Sleepout.

I would also like to wish all staff and students participating in next week’s launch of Christian Youth Ministry at St Joseph’s Regional College all the very best.

Rotary Essay Writing Success

On behalf of the College community I would like to congratulate Lily Howard who recently competed in the Rotary Year 8 International Projects Awards. The final was held at Westport Club on Tuesday evening where Lily introduced a presentation about an issue of international significance which highlighted cooperation. Lily chose education as her theme & her video addressed several charities and their work. She also noted that we can all "cooperate to educate." She then gave a 3 minute speech highlighting key points of the video. After voting Lily was declared the winner of the final & was presented with a cheque for $150.

Indeed, it takes courage for young people to make the decision to put themselves forward to compete in such competitions. The benefits, however, are clear in terms of giving young people the opportunity to construct a coherent argument in relation to relevant topic and then to think-on-their feet in response to a contemporary issue. Such an experience also goes a long way in preparing students for future study and taking on leadership roles in the College and wider community. Once again, I extend very warm congratulations to Lily for her success in this competition.

God Bless

Jim Dempsey Principal

FROM THE LEADER OF CATECHESIS AND SCHOOL EVANGELISA TION

FESTA CHRISTI This week the following opportunity was presented to the Year 9 students. Festa Christi is a gathering for selected Year 9 students from Parish Secondary Schools of the Diocese to celebrate their faith at a Diocesan level. The Gathering will be a chance to bring students together to meet like-minded peers and to celebrate with other young people who practise their faith. The activities will be a mixture of large and small sharing groups as well as celebrating the Eucharist together. The program has been geared to meet the needs of these Year 9 students. The gathering will be an overnight experience that will allow students to build relationships with other students from throughout the Diocese as well as a chance for students to talk and share about their faith journey. What: Festa Christi – a youth gathering for students from every Parish

school in the Southern Region of the Diocese. When : Thurs 14th – Fri 15th November 2013 Where: Coffs Camping and Conference Centre, Bonville Cost: Nil. All transport, food and accommodation expenses will be met by the Catholic

Schools Office.

A large number of students usually express an interest in this event. We can, however, only offer twelve places (6 males/ 6 females). Any student who would like to be considered is asked to write a brief statement supporting their nomination on the information sheets that will provided when this opportunity is presented.

SLEEP OUT

Every night across Australia, over 100,000 people are homeless. Nearly half of these are under the age of 25. The Port Macquarie-Hastings area has up to 125 young people reported to be homeless on any given night.

On October 25th (Friday, Week 3 ), St Joseph's Regional College will be holding its first ever sleepout. This will mean that for one night, 14 hours, you will sleep rough like many do each night across Australia. No lollies, no soft drink, no mobile phones. Get an insight into what it’s like to be homeless for a night.

See Jasmin for more information if you are interested.

YEAR 11 - Young People and Risk Taking

Talking to Young People about Alcohol and Drugs It is best for education about alcohol and drugs to begin before young people are exposed to personal decisions about their use. Young people who have accurate information, coping and decision making skills and understand the issues, will be in a good position to make responsible decisions about alcohol and drugs. Parents provide a powerful role model when it comes to drinking and attitudes to alcohol and other drugs. Take time to talk. Sitting down with the young person in your care and mapping out a plan of action and what to say if they are offered drugs or alcohol can help equip them for the almost inevitable real event. Listen to what the young person in your family says about alcohol and drugs and follow up with a discussion. Take the opportunities when they come up during everyday activities, for example: When you pour a glass of alcohol When alcohol or other drugs are mentioned on TV or other media When using or giving out medicines When your young person has an assignment on alcohol, smoking, medicines or other drugs. It is important to understand that in some situations young people may take risks. Sitting down afterwards and helping them identify where things started to go wrong enables them to consider what they could do differently the next time they are faced with a similar situation.

♦ Australian Alcohol Guideline for Children and young people under 18 Not drinking alcohol is the safest option. For children under 15 Parents and carers are advised that children under 15 years of age are at the greatest risk of harm from drinking and that for this age group, not drinking is especially important. For Young people aged 15-18 years The safest option is to delay the initiation of drinking for as long as possible. Australian Alcohol Guidelines to reduce health risks from drinking alcohol. LIBRARY NEWS Year 11 Book return Year 11 have been advised that all their Preliminary textbooks need to be returned by Wednesday of Week 3, after which they will be billed for these items. Emails have been sent to each student outlining which titles are to be returned. Please assist your child to attend to this important process.

Pat White This week, we were to host indigenous author Gladys Milroy, but she had to cancel her plans due to circumstances beyond her control. Fortunately, New Zealand author Pat White was able to step in and speak to our students in her place. Pat was the 2010 Writer in Residence at the historic Randell Cottage in Wellington, New Zealand and in that same year, his collection of essays “How the Land Lies : of longing and belonging” was published. Many thanks to the organisers of the Camden

Haven Watermark Literary Muster, and the Port Macquarie-Hastings Library for facilitating this visit. E-Book Library Our e-book library continues to expand with the addition this week of some new titles. During the holidays, 10% of the e-book library was out on loan which indicates a fantastic level of engagement by students and staff. The site is sjrcexchange.lib.overdrive.com. Dear Parents and Carers, We have some families in our school community that are currently facing some significantly challenging medical hardships. We are trying to support these families through these difficult times by providing meals to help ease the burden. Donations of meals ie: casseroles etc would be warmly received and greatly appreciated. These care packages will be delivered to our families regularly to provide continued support and let them know they are in our thoughts. If you could find some time to help, please label your meals with ingredients and deliver them to the school office.
