Catholic Women’s League The Catholic Women’s League is the largest national organization of Catholic women in Canada. It is an organization that has been going strong in most parishes across Canada

since 1920 and here at St. Joseph’s since June 1946. The Catholic Women’s League is all about family. We actively fight for the rights of women and families at all levels of government, passing resolutions and working hard to understand and then act on complex political and social issues that affect all Cana-dians. As well, through fundraising activities, we support many groups that embody gos-

pel values.

DIOCESAN EVENTS DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE Our God who is full of compassion, promises to lift up those who are bowed down. Lead

us to understand not our own actions, dwelling within our own imperfect mind and flesh,

but to call in trust and unity of spirit upon Jesus Christ. Help us to also become conduits of

His grace as we work towards the Common Good. Take some time to explore some of the

activities and resources Development and Peace has made available for Canadians to en-

gage with Global Justice at http://www.devp.org/en/resources/activities

WHAT HAVE CATHOLICS CONTRIBUTED

Archbishop Fulton Sheen once said, “There are not even 100 people in this country who

hate the Catholic Church, but there are millions who hate what they think the Catholic

Church to be.” 1. Light and the cosmos: (1)Franciscan Roger Bacon (d 1292) at the request

of Pope Clement IV, largely initiated the tradition of optics in the Latin world - the first

spectacles were invented in Italy around 1300, an application of lenses that developed later

into telescopes and microscopes; (2)the Gregorian Calendar (1582), now used worldwide,

is a fruit of work by Catholic astronomers, (3)as is the development of astrophysics by the

spectroscopy of Fr Angelo Secchi (d 1878); (4)the Big Bang, was invented by a Catholic

priest, Fr Georges Lemaître (d 1966,), a historical fact that is almost never mentioned.

Future areas will include optics, science, philosophy, education, law, music, architecture,

literature, language
