Today, 39 years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court legalized the direct killing of innocent human persons. The infamous Roe v. Wade decision was a turning point for this nation. We lost our innocence that year. Not only had we given ourselves over to the fornications of the sexual revolution, but in 1973 we declared ourselves willing to destroy any children accidentally conceived by our infidelities. Unlawful sex — any intercourse outside of the marriage covenant — is always violent, and it leads to greater violence. The decay of our social fabric began with the contraceptive pill in the 1940s, but it jolted violently forward with the legalization of abortion in 1973. Roe v. Wade seemed to catch us off-guard in 1973; but America, who has championed the “culture of death” to all the world, also had led the world in prolife activism. I can remember marching down Pennsylvania Avenue as a kid, in January’s bitter cold. We gathered in the snow at the Ellipse near the White House, and then made our way slowly toward the U.S. Capitol. We waved to legislators along the way who peered from their congressional office building windows. Washington’s March for Life has grown every year since 1974. Now hundreds of thousands march from the White House to the Capitol. And now there are marches in all the major cities, most notably in our own beloved San Francisco, where 40,000 walked yesterday. Over these 40 years, the sheer numbers and tenacity of this civil rights movement dwarfs past civil

rights movements. Because, indeed, the Pro-life Movement is the civil rights movement of our time. The unborn person is a distinct individual (“if it’s

not a baby, she’s not pregnant”) and has rights. We will not stop marching until these rights are recognized in law. We are well on our way.

“Stewardship: Sharing These Gifts in Love of God and Neighbor” January 22 — Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Throughout history, individuals have answered the personal call they received from the Lord. Jonah was reluctant at first, but followed God’s call to warn the people of Nineveh about the coming doom. As Jesus began His ministry of bringing the Good News to mankind He called Simon and Andrew and James and John. Once called by Jesus they dropped what they were doing and followed the Lord. After spending time listening to Jesus and watching Him, these disciples were ready to continue the work of spreading the Gospel. May our ears be open when Jesus calls and may we respond with the promptness of the fishermen from Galilee.

Retreat: Time to Refocus on God One of the best kept secrets in the Catholic Church are RETREATS.

What is a retreat? A Catholic retreat is a time away from the ordinary demands of daily life to spend time “on vacation” with God and fellow Christians. Traditionally, retreats include talks, prayer, Mass and silent reflection. Often, entire portions of retreats are spent in complete silence to foster a spirit of listening. Some people also like to make unguided retreats simply by staying at a monastery and attending Mass and public prayer and enjoying the rest of the time in silence, alone with God. This may sound uncomfortable if you’ve never done it, but once you get used to the silence you might discover that you are not ever truly alone because God is always there for you.

It can be difficult to understand God’s revelation for each of us individually without a guide. That is the role of a retreat master at a retreat. He or she leads participants in “conferences;” short talks designed to help the participants gain new insights into God’s love for them and discover for themselves His marvelous desires for their lives. On retreat, priests often offer time for spiritual direction to help know God’s wisdom.

It is a good practice to attend a retreat annually, in order to help us to be refreshed by God and refocus on the things that matter most in life: family, prayer, and the life of charity. Retreats improve our relationship with God and with others and helps us make concrete resolutions to deal with daily life that often times can be messy. God has wisdom to help us in 2012. He wants us to know freedom and peace in our homes and have the courage to live the gospel message in our daily lives. Perhaps attending a retreat would make a great New Year’s resolution?

St. Gianna Beretta Molla (1922-1962) Gianna Molla was born in Magenta (Milan) on October 4, 1922. Already as a youth she willingly accepted the gift of faith and the Christian education that she received from her excellent parents. As a result, she experienced life as a marvelous gift from God, had a strong faith in Providence and was convinced of the necessity and effectiveness of prayer. Through her prayers, and those of others, she reflected

upon her vocation, which she also considered a gift from God. Having chose the vocation of marriage, she embraced it with complete enthusiasm and wholly dedicated herself ‘to forming a truly Christian family’. She gave birth to three beautiful, healthy children and later became pregnant with her fourth. During the second month of pregnancy, she was touched by suffering and the mystery of pain. She had developed a fibroma in her uterus. A few days before the child was due she was ready to give her life in order to save that of her child: “If you must decide between me and the child, do not hesitate. Choose the child-I insist on it. Save him”. On April 21, 1962, Gianna Emanuela was born. Despite all efforts to save both of them, on the morning of April 28, after repeated exclamations of “Jesus, I love you. Jesus, I love you”, the mother died. She was 39 years old.

Saint Gianna Molla, Pray for us! Thank you to all those who attended “Walk for Life”!

Legacy Stories

In May, 2009 Bill and Louise Terra (pictured above) suffered the type of loss that all parents most fear: two of their children and two grandchildren perished in an

automobile accident. The pain of that loss is sharp still, but their faith has sustained them. In memory of the

family members they lost, they funded the cost of a baby grand piano for our parish hall to create the type of beautiful music we enjoyed at this year’s Children’s

Richard Braun said yes. At a Knights of Columbus meeting a few months back I asked the 60 men seated at our monthly meeting if a Knight would take over our Parish Respect Life Committee. The work of the Committee has been done mostly by the wives of our Knights, and now, I suggested, it was time for a man, a Knight himself, to do it. A “knight,” after all, is dedicated to the defense of women and children, and there is no greater abuse of women and children than legal abortion. So a few days after my invitation, Richard Braun called me on the phone. “Yes. I’ll do it. And I’ll enlist the collaboration of other Knights of Columbus.” Thank you Richard! Among other things, our Respect Life Committee organizes the annual bus trip to the Walk for Life in San Francisco, which just happened yesterday. We send the largest delegation of just about any parish in Northern California. Thanks, Richard, and thanks to all the wives who have done this in the past (Christi, Kathy, Teresa and others) and to the men who also worked on it (Brian, Ed and others).

In the Diocese... From our Holy Father in Rome

MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS FOR THE CELEBRATION

OF THE WORLD DAY OF PEACE 1 JANUARY 2012

EDUCATING YOUNG PEOPLE IN JUSTICE AND PEACE (PART I)

The beginning of a new year, God’s gift to humanity, prompts me to extend to all, with great confidence and affection, my heartfelt good wishes that this time now before us may be marked concretely by justice and peace. With what attitude should we look to the New Year? We find a very

beautiful image in Psalm 130. The Psalmist says that people of faith wait for the Lord “more than those who watch for the morning” (v. 6); they wait for him with firm hope because they know that he will bring light, mercy, salvation. This waiting was born of the experience of the Chosen People, who realized that God taught them to look at the world in its truth and not to be overwhelmed by tribulation. I invite you to look to 2012 with this attitude of confident trust. It is true that the year now ending has been marked by a rising sense of

frustration at the crisis looming over society, the world of labour and the economy, a crisis whose roots are primarily cultural and anthropological. It seems as if a shadow has fallen over our time, preventing us from clearly seeing the light of day. In this shadow, however, human hearts continue to wait for the dawn of which the Psalmist speaks. Because this expectation is particularly powerful and evident in young people, my thoughts turn to them and to the contribution which they can and must make to society. I would like therefore to devote this message for the XLV World Day of Peace to the theme of education: “Educating Young People in Justice and Peace”, in the conviction that the young, with their enthusiasm and idealism, can offer new hope to the world. My Message is also addressed to parents, families and all those involved in the area of education and formation, as well as to leaders in the various spheres of religious, social, political, economic and cultural life and in the media. Attentiveness to young people and their concerns, the ability to listen to them and appreciate them, is not merely something expedient; it represents a primary duty for society as a whole, for the sake of building a future of justice and peace. It is a matter of communicating to young people an appreciation for the positive value of life and of awakening in them a desire to spend their lives in the service of the Good. This is a task which engages each of us personally. The concerns expressed in recent times by many young people around the world demonstrate that they desire to look to the future with solid hope. At the present time, they are experiencing apprehension about many things: they want to receive an education which prepares them more fully to deal with the real world, they see how difficult it is to form a family and to find stable employment; they wonder if they can really contribute to political, cultural and economic life in order to build a society with a more human and fraternal face. It is important that this unease and its underlying idealism receive due attention at every level of society. The Church looks to young people with hope and confidence; she encourages them to seek truth, to defend the common good, to be open to the world around them and willing to see “new things” (Is 42:9; 48:6).

Página 8 - St. Joseph’s Modesto CORRESPONSABILIDAD (STEWARDSHIP)

Por Fr. Joseph Illo
