Father Mark Wagner After Easter I had the

joy of going to the movies with a group of friends including Fr. Illo and Fr. O'Donnell. We saw the movie "Cinderella" which surprisingly contains much Christian symbolism. Cinderella represents us when we are enslaved by evil and our inner beauty is covered over with the soot of sin. Nevertheless we have hope of being saved by the Risen Christ who in the fairy tale is symbolized by the hand-some prince. (The stag in the forest is also a medieval symbol of Christ.)

Cinderella represents a Lent which begins in ashes and ends with Easter nuptials.

In the film Cinderella is like a saint. She is not full of self-pity and vindic-tiveness. In the end she forgives her wicked stepmother. She is like so many saints and prophets who did not disdain

to sit in ashes and endure a life of penance.

And of course the story ends with a wedding and they live happily ever after. This is the same happy ending that we heard about in the fourth reading at the Easter Vigil: "The One who has become your husband is your Maker... The LORD calls you back, like a wife forsaken and grieved in spirit... For a brief moment I abandoned you, but with great tenderness I will take you back." (Is. 54:5). And the Responsorial Psalm from today's Mass could express the longings of the Church as well as those of Cinderella: "You relieve me when I am in distress... Let the light of your face shine upon us! You put gladness into my heart."

Respect Life

“From the beginning, the living Tradition of the Church—as shown by the Didache, the most ancient non-biblical Christian writing—categorically repeated the commandment ‘You shall not kill’: ‘There are two ways, a way of life and a way of death; there is a great difference between them. ...In accordance with the precept of the teaching: you shall not kill...you shall not put a child to death by abortion nor kill it once it is born...The way of death is this: ...they show no compassion for the poor, they do not suffer with the suffering, they do not acknowledge their creator, they kill their children and by abortion cause God’s creatures to perish; they drive away the needy, oppress the suffering, they are advocates of the rich and unjust judges of the poor; they are filled with every sin. May you be able to stay ever apart, O children, from all these sins!’”

D uring this period of Easter, the Sunday readings direct all of the baptized to unpack and

daily live out the sacramental mysteries. While this mystagogy, or “leading deeper into the mysteries” should be done for the rest of our lives, the Scriptures of the Easter season in a particular way help us to reflect on how we live out a relationship with Jesus. You will find a brief reflection and a question for reflection in today’s Gospel.

We need to “marinate” in Scripture If you have ever been caught up in a

television series, you know that in order to understand the characters and plot of the series, you need to become acquainted with them from the beginning. My wife and I jumped into “Bones” sometime in season 8, or so, and have followed it ever since. We never went back to watch all of the episodes or seasons prior to that; we only know the show from the point that we began. Over the course from that initial episode, we have come to appreciate the uniqueness of the individual characters as well as their interactions with each other. For the most part, we feel pretty confident in our knowledge

about the show, but every so often, an implication is made that the appearance of a scene or character is supposed to move us in a particular way; there was a foundational understanding in a previous episode. Unfortunately, many of these implications are lost to my wife and I, having only jumped into the whole story a couple of seasons ago. We never took the time to develop our understanding of it by seeing the story from the beginning.

Today’s readings point out the same situation regarding Jesus.. When He appears to the disciples, He “opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.” He pointed out everything that was a sneak peak of the events that had just happened. In the first reading, Peter uses the same tactic; he tells the Jewish people that all of the things that they had hoped and longed for, through

“Marinating” in Scripture 3rd Sunday of Easter Mystagogy

the writings of the Old Testament, were found in Jesus Christ. If the people did not have an understanding of those writings, the message would have been less clear. So it is with us, living in the 21st century.

In order to more fully understand Jesus, as portrayed in the Gospels, we need to be immersed in Scripture; we need to “marinate” in it. Through it, we come to know Jesus better, and we hear God speak to us in the context of His Great story. To begin your “marinating,” follow these simple steps:

Take off the wrapping—Set aside a time and invite the Holy Spirit to help you listen.

Immerse in flavor—Attentively read Sunday’s Gospel, paying attention to what catches your attention.

Allow to stand in flavor over period of time—Have a conversation with God about those things that caught your attention (conversation with God = prayer). .

Bake—Listen for a response and write it down for future reference.

Enjoy—Thank God for everything that happened in that time with His Word.

THE POPE'S PRAYER

INTENTIONS

Evangelization Intention - Persecuted

Christians That persecuted Christians may feel

the consoling presence of the Risen Lord and the solidarity of all the Church.

In the last part of his Spiritual Exercises, St. Ignatius invites us to reflect on how the Risen Jesus came to the apostles to comfort and strengthen them. He writes: “Consider the office of consoler that Christ our Lord exercises, and compare it with the way in which friends are wont to console each other.”

This month Pope Francis asks us to pray that our brothers and sisters who are being persecuted may feel the consoling presence of the Risen Lord. Though physically distant from us, they are spiritually close. Suffering because they are Christians, they have a special place in the Heart of Jesus, and, if we are united to that Heart, they will have a special place in our hearts as well.

Persecution is increasing. Last November Prince Charles presented to the British Parliament the Religious Freedom in the World Report 2014, a survey conducted by journalists and scholars and published by Aid to the Church in Need.

The report stated that religious freedom was curtailed to some degree in 115 of the world’s 196 nations. Active persecution was taking place in 20 countries. In 14 of those countries, Muslim extremists were responsible, while in 6 of them Christians suffered at the hands of authoritarian and often atheistic regimes.

Pope Francis believes persecution should bring Christians of all denominations together. “The blood of Jesus,” he said, “poured out by many Christian martyrs in various parts of the world, calls us and compels us towards the goal of unity. For persecutors, we are not divided. We are one in their eyes! For persecutors we are Christians! This is the ecumenism of blood that we experience today.”

May our prayerful solidarity with persecuted Christians help them know they are not alone nor abandoned. May it help to bring us together as the One Body of Christ.

Reflection Do I get angry at those who are

persecuting Christians? How can I channel that anger into a positive response?

Parish Stewardship — a way of life

By: Fr. Mark Wagner

David and Jasmine Palomino are examples of what can happen if you do things right. When they became engaged they decided to get married in the Church, and while doing marriage preparation they began to attend Mass more regularly. They were a good influence on one another, and the mutual support from the Sacrament of Marriage strengthened them to serve the Lord and His Church. They began to be better stewards of their time and talents. They began by singing in choirs at Mass. Jasmine says that her teenage years were “not all that pleasant” and so she began to feel a pull in her heart to help troubled teenagers. So she and David served for several years on the Core Team in the St. Joseph’s High School Youth Ministry.

David is an RN at Doctor’s Medical Center and Jasmine is a hair stylist. David and Jasmine have been married for four years and they are the proud parents of Cristian (3) and Ezelyn (1). Jasmine saw the need to support young Catholic mothers and so she became the co-foundress of our wonderful new St. Joseph’s MOM’s group (“Mary Our Mother”). Jasmine has also helped as Publicity and Marketing Coordinator for our Parish Festival. For three years Jasmine has been Assistant Director of the Live Stations of the Cross which is our dramatic re-enactment of Christ’s Passion on Good Friday. We thank David and Jasmine for taking up the Cross and following the Lord so faithfully together!

(Is. 54:5).

CORRESPONSABILIDAD (STEWARDSHIP)

Por: Padre Mark Wagner

Leer, Meditar, Orar y Vivir

David & Jazmin Palomino

Padre Hamilton Suarez Los apóstoles estaban sorprendidos
