Transfiguration of Jesus by Carl Bloch

“In the Transfiguration, Jesus changes to reveal to everyone His inner essence/reality, Who He truly is: God.”

On August 6, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Transfiguration. Since August 6 falls on a Sunday this year, we celebrate the Transfiguration of Jesus at Sunday Mass. Why is the Transfiguration held on August 6? Originally, it was not. The Transfiguration was a celebration that first originated and developed in the Eastern Church, and it was celebrated during Lent, around February, and not in August as it is now celebrated. In the fourth century, the new church of the Transfiguration was dedicated. The Transfiguration of the Lord is celebrated on the sixth of August because of its connection to the Exaltation of the Cross of the Lord, which is celebrated on September 14. According to Tradition, since the Transfiguration of Jesus occurred 40 days prior to the crucifixion of Jesus, the Savior, the Church Fathers, counted forty days back from the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross of the Lord (September 14), and established that Transfiguration to be

celebrated on August 6, because from August 6 to September 14 is exactly 40 days. Tradition tells us that the Transfiguration of Jesus occurred on Mount Tabor, which is remarkably high, and in ancient times was covered with green trees and shrubs. It was very verdant and fruitful. Mount Tabor rises like a loaf of bread, in a vast plain in the middle of Galilee. This was the place in which Jesus, the God-Man, appeared in His glory for the apostles to see. The splendor of Jesus’ inward Divinity and the Beatific Vision of God overflowed on Jesus’ body and permeated His garments, so that Christ stood before Peter, James, and John in astounding white and brightness.

The painting that we see here today is the Transfiguration of Jesus by Carl Bloch (1834-1890). I like this painting because Bloch depicts Jesus as dazzling white, surrounded in bright light, as we read in the Bible. In the Gospel of Matthew, we read that “his garments became white as the light.” The word for light in Greek is phos. Phos means more than just light. In the Bible, light (phos) represented the manifestation of God's self-existent life. Light was a revelation of the Divine: God.

In the Gospel of Matthew today, we hear that Jesus was “transfigured.” The word used in Greek is metamorphoen, which comes from the root metamorphoo meaning “to change form” or “to transform.” We get our English word metamorphosis from this Greek word. Metamorphoo can be broken into two parts. The first part is meta, which means "change after with." It implies a change afterward. The second part is morphoo, which means “a form embodying inner essence." It implies a subject’s inner reality; the form that properly embodies a particular inner essence. So, in the Transfiguration, Jesus changes to reveal to everyone His inner essence/reality, Who He truly is: God.

In Bloch’s painting, notice how everyone is facing towards Jesus. The Apostles Peter, James, and John, in the lower left corner, and both Moses and Elijah, to the left and right of our Lord, in the center, are all looking at Jesus. Everyone has their backs to us, because like the viewer, we are all looking forward, gazing at Jesus, the Son of God. In Matthew 17:3 we hear, “and behold!” The Greek word used is idou, which means “to look,” but more than just a simple look or glance. Idou means to call special attention to something. It carries the sense of: "be sure to see this!" or "don't miss this!” Moreover, in the Greek Scriptures, it is used as an imperative, or a command. “Behold!” This commands us the viewer to look and to keep on looking! We are not to stop looking at Jesus. All Christians are called to look, and to keep on looking at Jesus, the Son of God, everyday of our life! Pope Benedict XVI described how the events of the transfiguration display Christ as the “full manifestation of God's light.” Pope Benedict XVI stresses that the feast of the Transfiguration is an important opportunity for believers to look to Christ as the light of the world. “Today, the liturgy invites us to focus our gaze on this mystery of light. On the transfigured face of Jesus a ray of light which he held within shines forth. The Transfiguration invites us to open the eyes of our hearts to the mystery of God's light. In our time too, we urgently need to emerge from the darkness of evil, to experience the joy of the children of light!” The Transfiguration calls believers to experience the ongoing conversion, described in the Bible, of gazing at Christ and moving from the darkness of sin to God’s light.

May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Good Help, help us with her maternal care, and St. Joseph pray for us. Vivat Jesus! Live Jesus!

La Iglesia celebra la Fiesta de la Transfiguración el día 6 de Agosto. Ya que este 6 de agosto cae en domingo, celebraremos la fiesta de la Transfiguración de Jesús en la misa dominical. ¿Por qué se realiza la Transfiguración el 6 de agosto? Originalmente, no lo era, fue una celebración que primero se originó y desarrolló en la Iglesia de Oriente y se celebraba durante el tiempo de Cuaresma, durante el mes de febrero, no en agosto como lo es ahora. En el siglo IV, se estableció la nueva fecha de la Transfiguración. Esta festividad se celebra el día 6 de agosto por su conexión con la Exaltación de la Cruz del Señor, la cual se celebra el día 14 de septiembre. Según la Tradición, la Transfiguración de Jesús ocurrió 40 días antes de la crucifixión de Cristo Jesús, el Salvador. Dado el caso, los Padres de la Iglesia, decidieron contar cuarenta días atrás de la Fiesta de la

6 sierpnia Kościół obchodzi Święto Przemienienia Pańskiego. Jako że Przemienienie wypada w tym roku w niedzielę, celebrujemy owe święto podczas Mszy Świętej. Kiedyś, Przemienienia Pańskiego nie celebrowano 6 sierpnia. To święto ma swoje korzenie w Kościele Wschodnim i pierwotnie przypadało w lutym, w czasie Wielkiego Postu. Święto Przemienienia Pańskiego obchodzone jest 6 sierpnia ze względu na związek z przypadającym 14 sierpnia Świętem Podwyższenia Krzyża Świętego. Zgodnie z Tradycją, Przemienienie Pańskie miało miejsce 40 dni przed Ukrzyżowaniem, Ojcowie Kościoła odliczyli czterdzieści dni wstecz od Święta Podwyższenia. Tym sposobem, Przemienienie Pańskie obchodzimy 6

sierpnia. Od 6 sierpnia do 14 września jest bowiem dokładnie 40 dni. Z Tradycji wiemy, iż Przemienienie wydarzyło się na niesamowicie wysokiej Górze Tabor, w starożytności pokrytej soczystą zielenią drzew i krzewów. Góra Tabor wznosi się niczym bochen chleba na rozległej równinie pośrodku Galilei. Właśnie w tym miejscu, Chrystus, Bóg-Człowiek, ukazał się apostołom w całej chwale. Spłynął tam na Jezusa cały splendor Jego wewnętrznej Boskości oraz błogosławiona wizja Boga. Przeniknęły one Jego Ciało oraz szaty. Chrystus stał przed Piotrem, Jakubem i Janem w olśniewającej bieli. Widzimy tu obraz pędzla Carla Blocha (1834-1890) pod tytułem: „Przemienienie Pańskie”. Lubię to dzieło, gdyż artysta ukazuje to wydarzenie tak, jak zostało ono opisane w Biblii – Jezus w olśniewająco białych szatach, otoczony blaskiem. W Ewangelii według św. Mateusza czytamy, że: Jego „odzienie [zaś] stało się białe jak światło”. Greckim określeniem światła jest phos – ale to słowo zawiera w sobie więcej, niż tylko tylko definicję światła. W Piśmie Świętym, phos stanowi widzialną manifestację Bożego życia. Poprzez światło objawia się sam Bóg. Z dzisiejszej Ewangelii wiemy, iż Jezus się „przemienił”. Słowo użyte w oryginalnym tekście greckim to „metamorphoen” („zmieniać się”, „przemieniać”). Stąd się wzięła po polsku (jak też w innych językach) „metamorfoza”. Owy źródłosłów można rozbić na dwie części. „Meta” oznacza: „zmieniać się w następstwie”. „Morphoen” to z kolei „ucieleśnienie wnętrza”. Podczas Przemienienia, Jezus ujawnia Swoją prawdziwą tożsamość, Swoje wnętrze. Ujawnia On to, kim naprawdę jest: Bogiem. Zwróćmy uwagę na to, jak wszystkie postacie na obrazie Blocha (w lewym dolnym rogu apostołowie Piotr, Jakub oraz Jan, jak też stojący po obu stronach Mesjasza Mojżesz i Eliasz) patrzą na Pana. Wszyscy obróceni są plecami do nas, gdyż oni, tak jak my, patrzą przed siebie, na Syna Bożego. W Ewangelii Mateusza 17:3 mamy wykrzyknienie: „A OTO ukazał się im...”. W greckim oryginale występuje słowo „idou” („patrzeć”). Nie chodzi tu jednak o takie zwykłe, przelotne spojrzenie. To słowo należy raczej rozumieć jako zwrócenie szczególnej uwagi na coś. To jest wręcz rozkaz: „Patrzcie!”, „Musicie to zobaczyć!”, „Nie przegapcie tego!” Widz ma patrzeć nieustannie! Nie możemy przestać patrzeć na Jezusa. Wszystkich chrześcijan wzywa się do nieustannego patrzenia na Syna Bożego, przez całe nasze życie. Ojciec Święty Benedykt XVI powiedział, iż poprzez Przemienienie, Chrystus objawia się nam „w pełni Bożej światłości”. Papież podkreśla, że Święto Przemienienia jest dla nas ważną okazją, abyśmy ujrzeli w Jezusie Światłość Świata. „Dzisiejsza liturgia skupia się na tej tajemnicy światła. Twarz przemienionego Jezusa jaśnieje światłem, dotychczas skrytym wewnątrz. W Święto Przemienienia zachęca się nas do otwarcia naszych serc na tajemnicę Bożego światła. W obecnych czasach również musimy koniecznie wyjść z ciemności i zła, aby doświadczyć radości dzieci światłości!” Przemienienie Pańskie jest doświadczeniem stałego nawrócenia opisanego w Biblii, ciągłego patrzenia na Chrystusa, doświadczeniem podróży z ciemności grzechu ku Bożej światłości. Święta Maryjo, Matko Nieustającej Pomocy, miej nas zawsze w Swej opiece. Święty Józefie módl się za nami. Vivat Iesus! Chwała Jezusowi!

Where has the time gone! By the time you read this there will be only 9 days before we begin school. I mentioned last week that four of the faculty members and I are participating in the Harvard Data Wise Program. The program has two parts. Part one is designed to help schools establish a design meeting protocols for schools to look at and discuss data related to school improvement. The second part is to establish norms that look at educational data including testing data and determine how our children interact with it. From this we will develop a plan for continued school improvement. I was fortunate to work with a great team. The team members were: Mrs. Valentino grade 1; Ms. Ocampo grade 4, Mrs. Nieminski grade 5 and Mrs. Cervi grade 7. Our work will change the way wok with the information we have about our school and help us to make the changes necessary to help all children learn. I will be reporting our progress periodically as we move through the school year. During the summer, we did have one unexpected staff change. Mr. Porod decided to leave St. Joseph and accept a teaching position in the Joliet Diocese. Mr. Porod worked at St. Joseph the past 11 years and while we are sad to see him go, we wish him the best of luck at his new school. We are very happy to welcome Ms. Morrisette to the St. Joseph Faculty. Ms. Morrisette comes to us very highly recommended. She completed her clinicals at Mather High School teaching honors and A.P. History along with ESL Social Studies. She has a Master’s Degree from the University of Illinois. Ms. Morrisette will be our junior-high Social Studies teacher and sixth grade homeroom teacher. IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO REGISTER FOR THE 20017 – 2018 SCHOOL YEAR. As I stated last week we still have room in our both our 3 & 4 – year old preschool. As well as most grades but especially in our middle grades (4 – 6), where we have been awarded additional funding for new families with children in those grades.
