A Note from Deacon Tyler Raymond-- Dear St Joe's,

I wanted to extend my heartfelt appreciation for all of the support, love, and prayers you have given me over these years in seminary that have helped me to reach this point of ordination to the transitional deaconate. I would not be here if it were not for everything that I have received from my home parish, from first communion and confirmation, religious education, youth group, and the many friends and parish family who have taught me and made me feel at home and empowered to serve God's people as an ordained minister. In a time when

vocations to the priesthood are not as plentiful as we would like, it is a great testament to the strength and holiness of St Joe's parish that I was able to find and answer God's call to the priesthood here. I especially want to thank you for the beautiful Book of the Gospels I received for my ordination. It is a great reminder to me not only of the care I have received from all of you, but also of my mission and ministry as one who proclaims God's saving word. By the Grace of God I hope to be ordained a priest next Memorial Day weekend, and I look forward to celebrating with all of you, and until then serving as a deacon when I am back home! There are many more young men at St Joe's who are called to be priests so please encourage them, ask them if they have thought about priesthood, direct them to the priests, Deacon Josh, or myself, and most of all pray that they will hear and answer God's call for them.

This summer I am with Fr. Gross in Calmar, Festina, Ossian, and Spillville, learning a lot so far about ordained ministry, so please continue to pray for me, and look after Deacon Josh!

May God Bless you all, Deacon Tyler

The Tiny Mustard Seed—Jesus said, “’To what shall we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable can we use for it? It is like a mustard seed that, when it is sown in the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth. But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the largest of plants and puts forth large branches so that the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade’” (Mk 4: 30-32).

Jesus taught through a simple parable, yet what is his message? The Kingdom is what God is doing in the world to call all to himself and reconcile them through his Son. His work was inaugurated simply through Jesus’ call of a small band of disciples and through his words and deeds. Yet, he has had a profound, everlasting effect. From the mustard seed has come a large tree welcoming and encompassing the nations.

All well and good, but how do we see this parable at work in our lives? Ultimately, Jesus has involved us all as workers in the Kingdom. In a way, we sow the seeds of the Kingdom. Priests and deacons do so in their parish, parents in the lives of their children and even children in the lives of their parents. Spouses do so for each other. You can sow the Kingdom at work, in school, at the sports complex and on the field. Your work is limitless, anywhere, anytime with anyone. One lesson the parable teaches is that we might be more conscious of and intentional regarding the role we play in the Kingdom. Our words and deeds as works of the Kingdom need not be complex, but very simple, just like the mustard seed. The tiniest seed produces great fruit. Let that insight assist and empower our work on behalf of the Kingdom.

Congratulations to all who were involved from the Steering Committee to the committee heads, the parish staff and the hundreds of volunteers from the most youthful to senior of our parish. Fun Days would not have been successful without the Providence of God, the guidance of faith and the great stewardship of time, talent and treasure shown by so many. Congratulations and a heartfelt thank you to all! Thank you for your commitment to and love for St. Joseph Church!

Father’s Day—I take inspiration for these remarks from the sculpture of the Holy Family that was recently installed in our church. I like the depiction of St. Joseph because it shows him to be a family man, a father and husband who cares for his wife and the child-Jesus. The sculpture shows Joseph with his cloak around Jesus and Mary as one who is their protector. The illuminated lamp he has in his hand indicates that he is a guide by showing his family the way both spiritually and in the world. That’s what a husband is in a marriage and as a father—one who acts as a protector and a guide. He shields his family from the harm the world can do and guides them in the faith by his own fidelity to God and spiritual practice. This Father’s Day as we offer recognition to our Dads and pray for those who have predeceased us, we give thanks for their faith, guidance and protection.
