VISION STATEMENT

To change the world through our faith in Jesus who is our light and hope.

From the Principal’s desk…. Welcome to Week 5. It was a genuine privilege to attend the Year 5 excursion to Sydney. The

students were a credit to their school, families and dedicated teachers.

There were so many highlights from the fun of the Bush to the Beach program at Collaroy Beach,

the peaceful Mass and tour of St Mary McKillop place, the walk into the historical Rocks area and

the fun of laser tag. A very special note of thanks and appreciation to Miss Teale, Miss Bolton, Mr

Sayers and Mr Thomas for all of their organisation and energy during the excursion. Well done Year

5!

Remembrance Day

Yesterday we paused for Remembrance Day. The 11 November 2018 marks the 100th anniversary

of the Armistice which ended the First World War. On this day we pause to pray and give thanks for

all those who have died in war in the hope for peace and for their families who have been left

behind.

O God of truth and justice,

we hold before you those men and women

who have died in active service

As we honour their courage and cherish their memory,

may we put our faith in your future;

for you are the source of life and hope,

now and forever.

Amen

Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the Dubbo service. However, Mrs Clifford and Mr Foley represented our great school

along with our school Captains.

Gospel and Reflection: Mark 12:38-44

Warning Against the Teachers of the Law

As he taught, Jesus said, “Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted with

respect in the marketplaces, and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. They

devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers.

These men will be punished most severely.”

The Widow’s Offering

Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put

and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple

treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor

widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a

few cents.

Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor

widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in

everything—all she had to live on.”

‘Please bring a little water in a pitcher for me to drink.’

This perennial story, contrasting the rich and the poor, the supercilious and the humble, has been replicated over the centu-

ries. Yet its message has rarely been as relevant as it is today. Readily coming to mind are issues of wealthy people practising

tax evasion and bolstering enormous superannuation payouts for themselves. We think of multinationals using tax havens to

conceal their true earnings, thereby denying their own countries the benefits they are due. Then with the generosity of the

poor widow we see war-torn countries taking in neighbouring refugees and are reminded of flourishing nations which turn

away. Pray that those in power will learn justice and compassion from the poor who can be their evangelisers

YEAR 5 SYDNEY EXCURSION Year 5 enjoyed their excursion to Sydney last week and they are to be commended on their excellent behaviour. The first place they visited was Scenic World at Katoomba, whilst there they went on the Scenic Railway, Scenic Cableway and did a rainforest walk.

On Wednesday they travelled on the ferry from Manly across to Circular Quay. They also had the opportunity to visit the Maritime Museum and explored the HMS Vampire and The Endeavour. Year 5 attended mass at Mary Mackillop Place and then were given a tour to learn more about the life of St Mary Mackillop. After this, they went to the Sydney Aquarium where they saw a variety of marine animals, did a penguin boat expedition and learnt about the importance of conservation. In the evening, both the students and teachers had lots of fun playing laser tag and arcade games.

On Thursday, the weather was perfect for the bush to beach program at Collaroy beach. They learnt about how to keep safe when at the beach and participated in surfing, tube rescuing, beach volleyball and beach soccer. The final activity in Sydney was a tour of the Rocks where they were we were told the story of early British settlement in Sydney and were shown what the living conditions were like during this era.
