Who are you? It’s a question we might ask of anyone we don’t know.How would you answer? Most of us would begin with our name and then probably go on to share other details of our lives. What details would you include?

One time during a gathering where we were asked to share our names and something about ourselves, one person said, “My name is ‘Ruth’ and I am a child of God.” That caught my attention! The most important thing about her was her relationship with God. I was impressed! What difference would it make if each of us could say the same? Actually, we could. I remind you of our identity every Sunday just before the dismissal when I say “Children of God, you are sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever. “If we identify ourselves first of all as God’s children, it makes a difference in how we look at our daily lives and at our future. With this different perspective, we would most likely think first about what God’s purpose is for us, about God’s vision and plans for us. On Sunday, April 28, we will gather during the Sunday School hour in the library to hear the common themes that arose from our small group meetings. We will think about what it looks like for us to be a congregation of God’s children and what that means for our future. In other words, we will begin to develop a new sense of identity, of who we are, and a new vision, a new picture, of what we can become with God’s help. Then if we have time, we will talk about first steps.I suspect we will need more conversation than just one Sunday. So we will probably schedule more conversations. The summary of our responses is elsewhere in this newsletter.I’m looking forward to our conversations and the renewal to follow.

SAVE THE DATE: APRIL 28

Recently members of St. John’s gathered to share memories, hopes, and other topics as we consider what is ahead. On April 28, during the Sunday School hour, you are invited to share your thoughts about where we are, where God might be leading us, and what hopes we have.

A summary of our thinking at that point is as follows:

Our memories are of fellowship, food, group activities, singing, special people, and special services.We come to worship, for spiritual growth, community, and rediscovering who we are as God’s peopleToday we enjoy the fellowship, the values, and being part of something bigger.We perceive others as wanting unconditional acceptance, friendship, guidance, inspiration, and an

invitation.Our perceived strengths are: people – strong leaders, volunteers; community outreach; our facility,

traditions, liturgy, music, and staff.The bright spot (small success on which to build) – Sunday School teachers and children’s ministry.

Other (not-so small-) successes include Fishing Derby, Christmas Bazaar, Rummage sale, Ice Cream Social

Hopes/Expectations: become truly welcoming; spiritual growth; unity; open to new ideas; expanded ministry within and outside congregation; weekly printed worship service; evening and weekend activities (?), involve more people.

Please plan to be part of the discussion. It is important for the future of St. John’s.

On DoubtThe astute Catholic monk Thomas Merton once declared, “A man is known better by his questions than his answers.”

He pointed out that religious traditions themselves unfold in the oscillation [the back and forth] between questions and answers, answers and questions. There is no great person of faith, be it Abraham or Moses, St Augustine or St John of the Cross, Jesus or [even] Muhammad, who did not express doubt, did not ask a lot of questions.

Theologian David Lose, (Luther Seminary) writes in his blog: I agree. …questions and doubt are not the opposite of faith but intertwined with it.

Music Festival May 5The Pre-Assembly meeting of the Tulpehocken Conference will be on Sunday, May 5, 2013, at United Lutheran Church, Sunbury. We will begin with a chicken pot-pie meal served by the ladies of the church at 1 pm (free-will donation), followed by the music festival/worship at 1:45. Choirs and organists of the conference have been invited to participate. The meeting itself will begin after the worship. You are all invited and encouraged to attend and mingle with other Lutheran Christians of our area. Please let the pastor or church office know if you plan to attend so the folks will have an idea of how much food to prepare.

AROUND THE CHURCH

There are alot of things happening around the Church – here are just a few highlights:

CHANGING STATION There is a changing station now available and located in the Narthex bathroom for your convenience. Thanks to our “handy men” for installing this for us.

SOUND We now have a new remote microphone system. Pastor Moll has a wireless headset, which allows her voice to be more audible.

LIGHTINGThe electricians were here to fix lighting on Third Street, and a new fixture is being placed at the Office door entrance.

SECURITY SYSTEMWork will be started in placing a security system at the Church. Video monitors will be placed in the Church Office, Pastor’s Office, Preschool, and Fellowship Hall ramp door. Persons will be able to access the building during normal working hours by using a buzzer. This comes in light of recent events in the community and providing a safe learning and work environment.

KATHRYN’S KLOSETAs you know we operate Kathryn’s Kloset on the 3rd Saturday of the month. Items received from Baltimore and our distribution center at St. Matthew’s are minimal, while the need in our area is great. Supplemental products for distribution are being purchased directly by the Church. If you would like to make a financial donation to help those less fortunate and in need, please place your donation in an envelope and mark “Kathryn’s Kloset” or use the Pink Envelope located in the pew for this month’s designation.

PROPERTY – Property Maintenance Request forms are located on a clipboard outside the Church Office, the Narthex, and Fellowship Hall. If you see something that needs replaced, repaired, or attention to, please fill out the information on the form.

Finance - St. John’s has received $3,000 in charitable donations from the trust account of Florence Stephens. $1,000 is for VBS, $1,000 for Children’s Sunday School and $1,000 for the Choir Program.

Social Ministry – Is still in need of a chairperson for this committee. Planning stages for the Ice Cream Social and 50 Year Member Recognition have begun.

Worship & Music – Thanks everyone for their time and talents in helping decorate the sanctuary, and providing inspirational music this Easter season. Conservation Sunday will be observed April 28th. Pentecost is May 19th and order forms for geraniums will be available in the near future.

WELCA – is gearing up for the Rummage, Soup, & Bake Sale scheduled for April 25th -27th.

PIG ROASTAND

OUTDOOR CONCERT

Come and celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Upper Susquehanna Synod, ELCA, at a special event on Friday, June 14, at Susquehanna University.

As the first day of the synod assembly winds down, assembly-goers and other guests will move outdoors to the lawn in the center of campus for a Pig Roast and Outdoor Music Festival, “Blast on the Grass”.

Tickets for the Pig Roast will only be sold in advance. Sign-up for tickets by calling the Church Office. Price per ticket is $10, and requests and payment for tickets must be received by May 19th .

S S Y N N IO PD P I T S Food Packaging Event

On April 27, 2013, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. members and friends of Faith Lutheran Church, Lewisburg, will pack and distribute meals through Outreach, Inc. Assembly lines of 10-12 volunteers each will assemble, seal, label, and pack 6-serving packages of a nutritionally-fortified macaroni and cheese dish for the low cost of 25 cents per serving.  Boxes packed with this product will be given to local food pantries and shelters. For more information or to sign up to help, please contact Faith Lutheran Church.

Sawdust Ministry Event

What is a Sawdust Ministry? It is a group of men and women who volunteer to work on homes of local folks who cannot afford critical repairs, an “on-site Habitat for Humanity” if you will, and thus help them maintain a decent standard of living at their residence. The Upper Susquehanna Synod Low Income Housing Task Force is partnering with Mike McCay of St. Luke, Bloomsburg, and the North Branch Sawdust Ministry on a plan to develop a synod-wide Sawdust Ministry. This ministry will be carried out by local clusters of congregations. An initial event to gather people who like to work on home repairs is being planned May 4 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Camp Mount Luther, where they can engage in small projects at the camp and also have a discussion as to how a sawdust ministry is started and run by a cluster of local churches/organizations. For more information on the camp’s Sawdust Day, contact Chad Hershberger at 570-922-1587 or to know more about starting your own Sawdust Ministry, contact Beth Yenchko eyenchko@uss-elca.org or Pr. The event will be held on Saturday, May 4, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Please bring supplies to do cleaning, mulching, raking, and light construction projects, such as step ladders, buckets, rakes, etc. A light lunch will be served. The butterfly symbolizes resurrection, Easter and the new life we have in Christ Jesus. As a caterpillar disappears into a chrysalis, so Jesus’ dead body was hidden in a tomb. The emergence of the butterfly, rising into the sky in its beautiful new body, reminds us of Christ’s resurrection — and ours.

The ELCA Malaria Campaign is starting work in Uganda – but help is needed. In Uganda, thousands of children die each year from malaria – a preventable and curable disease. The entire population is at risk of malaria, but less than 50 percent are protected by preventable measures like insect-treated bed nets and mosquito spraying. Hospitalization and deaths from malaria have increased in recent years. The time to help is now.

World Malaria Day is April 25 and we are turning this day into a special week – focusing on the work of the ELCA Malaria Campaign in Uganda. Our goal is to raise $250,000. This would be enough to jump-start malaria programming in Uganda. Imagine the number of lives saved and the impact we can have if we all come together on one Sunday for one cause. Join millions of people around the world and thousands of ELCA members across the United States in the fight against malaria on Sunday, April 28.
