1 St. John’s Episcopal Church – Canandaigua, New York THE EAGLE Volume 27, July and August 2014 Dear St. Johns friends, Stewardship! Its not just for fall campaigns any more!! At St. Johns we have begun a year-round stewardship program to help us all understand more fully what stewardship truly includes and what it means. We have shared monthly Stewardship Momentsin the liturgy including speakers Karen Mount, Peter Kane, myself, and our children with Fr. David. We have several more planned for the coming months, too. Weve been sharing the Time and Talentsof our fellow parishioners in the bulletins to highlight the many gifts of people we all know and care about. And this summer, the Stewardship Committee is working on a narrative budgetto show, in a more visual way, where we spend our pledged and endowed monies, whose time is go- ing for what reason, and where we are reaching out in the local community and beyond. We believe it is important to be as transparent as possible about all we are doing under that great umbrella of stewardship. If you were at the last special speakers program a few weeks ago, you heard Frank Yamada talking about potential changes in the church in the next 30 years. That group of young millennialsis living life very differently than most of us, and needless to say it s going to im- pact places like St. Johns in big, big ways. We are fortunate to have had a solid history and a strong base that has allowed us to be a stable presence in the Canandaigua community for over 200 years. We continue to be faithful and loving stewards of all of Gods gifts in the 21st century. And while we dont know what the future holds, we believe we are well -positioned to continue to be good stewards in the years ahead and to be a loving and beloved community. You may remember back when Karen Mount gave her Stewardship Moment, she shared some of the many things that fall under the umbrella. Here they are again: food for the body, space for the community, your job, speakers and their missions, support for community groups, your home, St. Johns finances, our children and youth, our congregationsneeds, your family, volunteer contributions, your friends, and food for your soul. Stewardship makes up so many different parts of our lives and our lives together. As the retired Archbishop of South Africa has reminded us, What in this life is not gift?Sincerely, Stacy Stacy Taylor Stewardship Chair Stacy Taylor Warden

THE EAGLE Volume 27, July and August 2014

Dear St. John’s friends, Stewardship! It’s not just for fall campaigns any more!! At St. John’s we have begun a year-round stewardship program to help us all understand more fully what stewardship truly includes and what it means. We have shared monthly “Stewardship Moments” in the liturgy including speakers Karen Mount, Peter Kane, myself, and our children with Fr. David. We have several more planned for the coming months, too. We’ve been sharing the “Time and Talents” of our fellow parishioners in the bulletins to highlight the many gifts of people we all know and care about. And this summer, the Stewardship Committee is working on a “narrative budget” to show, in a more visual way, where we spend our pledged and endowed monies, whose time is go-ing for what reason, and where we are reaching out in the local community and beyond. We believe it is important to be as transparent as possible about all we are doing under that great umbrella of stewardship. If you were at the last special speaker’s program a few weeks ago, you heard Frank Yamada talking about potential changes in the church in the next 30 years. That group of young “millennials” is living life very differently than most of us, and needless to say it’s going to im-pact places like St. John’s in big, big ways. We are fortunate to have had a solid history and a strong base that has allowed us to be a stable presence in the Canandaigua community for over 200 years. We continue to be faithful and loving stewards of all of God’s gifts in the 21st century. And while we don’t know what the future holds, we believe we are well-positioned to continue to be good stewards in the years ahead and to be a loving and beloved community. You may remember back when Karen Mount gave her “Stewardship Moment,” she shared some of the many things that fall under the umbrella. Here they are again: food for the body, space for the community, your job, speakers and their missions, support for community groups, your home, St. John’s finances, our children and youth, our congregations’ needs, your family, volunteer contributions, your friends, and food for your soul. HELLO!

WHO

HOW ARE YOU?

Nancy was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and attended school in Lake Ariel in the Poconos. After receiving a de-gree in nursing from St. Mary’s Hospital in Scranton, she worked at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. She continued attending college, obtaining a BSN degree from Nazareth College and an MPA degree from SUNY Brock-port. She attended Victoria University in Toronto, Canada, and Brunell University in London, England, comparing health care systems to earn a master’s degree. In 1968 she met Stephen and in 1970 they were married. They have two daughters: Stephanie, a lawyer with Nixon/Peabody, is married and has three children; Michelle, a mechanical engineer, is currently living in Chicago. In 1984 Nancy was made Director of Nursing at Blossom View Nursing Home is Sodus, New York and in 1990 was promoted to the position of Administrator. In 1999 she became a partner in the Nursing Home. She has had amazing success in recruiting and implementing certification of trained nurses in upstate New York. After forty years in Webster, New York, Nancy and Stephen, a retiree of Xerox, moved to Canandaigua, where they had vacationed almost every summer. They enjoy boating, swim-ming, travelling, and spending time with grandchildren. Joseph (11) plays football and baseball. Sophia (8) plays soccer and dances. Lilly (3) is already enrolled in dance classes. About a year ago when they were looking for a church, their dear friend Dorothy Grant invited Nancy to St. John’s. Nancy questioned why she would shift from a Methodist church to an Epis-copal Church, and Dorothy replied, “You’ll love it. I went from strict Catholic to Episcopalian.” Sure enough, Nancy liked Sunday services at St. John’s and continues to enjoy the warm friendly atmosphere! (Thank you, Dorothy!)

We are branches of the same tree, Reaching out in our shared faith, while strongly rooted in Christ.

UNITED THANK OFFERING (UTO)

During the beautiful summer in Canandaigua, we will have many opportunities to thank the Lord for the beauty of nature, for visiting families and friends, for knowing God’s presence when a little or a big challenge enters our lives. Our silent prayers will please God. A coin or two in the Blue Box is one of an Episcopalian’s ways to “pass it forward”. Watch for the date of our in-gathering.

OUR CHANGE CHANGES LIVES

Goodness is stronger than evil. Love is stronger than hate. Light is stronger than darkness. Life is stronger than death.

Victory is ours through Christ who loves us. Desmond Tutu, South Africa

SIMPLE PRESENCE

Retired Priest Associate Barbara Humphrey continues to recuperate from hip surgery. Her weekly schedule of “Simple Presence” at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday is temporarily suspended. Members of the group are encouraged to meet weekly to support each other.

NAME TAGS

Permanent name tags can be ordered any time! If you are a newcomer or missed filling out an appli-cation, please pick up an order form (available at the back of the church) and submit it to the church office together with a payment of $5.50 per person for clip-on or $6.50 for magnetic tags. When you receive your new name tag, please be sure to wear it whenever you attend a church ser-vice or other event. This is very helpful to the clergy as well as others who may not recognize you or know you or who may momentarily draw a blank about your name.

RED WAGON PANTRY A ministry separate from Gleaners Community Kitchen, the Red Wagon Pantry is supported entirely by donations from individuals, churches, and occasionally grocery stores. Twice a month canned goods and dried foods are given away. At the moment, however, the shelves are almost bare. Current needs include the following items:

small cans of soup, tomato sauce, spaghetti sauce, tuna fish, V-8 juice, tomato juice; small jars of peanut butter, jelly, jam; macaroni-and-cheese mix; juice pouches; cake mix and frosting mix; small packets of cookies; small boxes of cereal.

Donations may be left in the church office or at the back of the church (look for the red wagon!).
