PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Spring is around the corner! It is so nice to start to feel the
winter thaw and see the early signs of spring. This season
makes us think of renewal and fresh starts which is fitting since
we are firmly in our second term of the school year. Students
have received their report cards and can now focus on next
steps to improve their work and continue their academic
progress.
Last Month was very exciting for our school. St. John XXIII
really showed their brains and brawn last month. Our
intermediate basketball teams both advanced to divisional
finals with our girls making it all the way to the ¼ finals. Our
W5H team also advanced to the second round winning all their
competitions in the first. We have begun our lunchtime coding
club and students continue to have the opportunity to engage in
many co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. I want to
take this opportunity to thank all the many coaches who give
their personal time to provide these opportunities for our
students.
March break will be from the 13th to the 17th. I hope you have a
restful break with your family and friends. I pray that the
Lenten season is a peaceful and prayerful time for you and our
families.
Best regards,
Pershia Nelson

We have many activities planned for all the children in the next few weeks and some fun field trips for the Kindergarten and School Age children! The Kindergarten children will be going to Kortright Centre to see how maple syrup is made and stay for a pancake lunch! The School Age children are attending a Raptor’s farm game at the Air Canada Centre and going to the Bata Shoe Museum downtown. All of our trips are going to be in school buses and we expect great learning outcomes from all of our field trips.
If you are looking for care during March Break, please come by the daycare to enrol, spaces are limited so it will be at a first come, first serve.
We look forward to lots of fun in the coming few months!
Sincerely,

Spring seems to be just around the corner, and all the children and teachers are getting excited about the nicer weather. We will be celebrating St. Patrick's, Navroz and Holi, we feel that it’s really important for us to be celebrating various cultural celebration as our program is so multicultural and we learn so much from each other. Furthermore, cultural diversity is important to us. We strive to celebrate the diverse cultures of the world and this will be reflected in our program.
Within the rooms, the teachers have an excellent program ready for your child to engage in. Our focus continues to be on the academic areas such as math, language, and science but in combination with core skills such as problem solving and critical thinking.

On Tuesday, February 28, 2017, Wes Williams “The Maestro” came to
cap off our Black History Month. We were all inspired by his message
of Expectation, Operation and Destination.
February: The Month of Love
Welcome back to another month of school! This month's virtue was all about the virtue of love. Love is an intense feeling of deep affection towards someone or something. Love is shown at St. John twenty-third in various different ways. When it come to the beautiful hearts of all students and staff members, you will always feel loved when entering the school. That is what separates St. John twenty-third from all the other schools. Love is the sixth virtue of the year. Students have been demonstrating love since the very start of the
4
school year and I'm sure they will continue to show it throughout the year. Love is an important virtue to have while growing up. It teaches us a special feeling that cannot be forced. St. John twenty-third unites us all as one big family. That's love. We plan to always be a loving school even if it's not the month of love. This year is definitely something to remember.

Ms. Astorino’s Class shares a few of their experiences:
Scientist in School – What in the World is Matter?
On Wednesday February the 8th, we had Scientist in School. We learned about the three main
states of matter. Something very cool that we tested was different types of plastics. We
learned about plastic numbers 1,2 and 6 and their qualities which are transparent, translucent,
and opaque. Another amazing experiment we did was a chemical reaction experiment. We had
different solid substances on a board. On top, we added different types of liquids, and we
observed the transformation and different changes (bubbling, colour, texture) before our eyes.
Some of the solid substances we used were salt, sugar, baking soda, corn starch, and detergent
powder. The liquid substances were Iodine, vinegar and an indicator (types of colour). That
was one of my favourite experiments and I learned about the three states of matter. That was
my day with the Scientist in School.

During Scientist in School we learned about
buoyancy and matter. We did an experiment where
we put citric acid, baking soda and cabbage juice in a
bag and shook it. When we were done it was cold and
purple. We did another experiment where we used a
giant piece of paper and put salt, sugar, baking soda,
corn starch, detergent, and a mystery substance. We
mixed them with vinegar, iodine and grape juice. The
vinegar did nothing, the iodine made the baking soda
change colour, and the grape juice made every
substance change colour. We also had cups filled with
water and three pieces of plastic. We put the plastic in
the water to see if it floated. That’s what we did in
Scientist in School.

Reviews of James and the Giant Peach
James and the Giant Peach was performed at YPT
(Young People’s Theater). It’s about a boy named
James Henry Trotter. His parents died because of a
rhino (well, that’s another story!) and he is sent to
live with his Aunt Spiker and his Aunt Sponge. His
aunts are not like a family to him. When his two aunts
tell James to sleep outside of the house (as
punishment), an old man gives him a bag and
wonderful things happen. James has an amazing
adventure all the way from England to New York
City!

James and the Giant Peach was an amazing
experience! If you are wondering what “James and
the Giant Peach” is, it is a fun play. The story was
about a little boy named James who is an orphan. He
lost his parents, and his only family left are his two
aunts, Spiker and Sponge. They did not treat him like
a member of the family. One, day James met an old man and the old man showed James a
mysterious bag, which leads James to future happiness. I recommend this play for children. I
think it is a really funny play. You should go check this play out!

This month, we went to a play called “James and the Giant Peach”. It was amazing! I liked
how it was a musical and there was humour in it. I’d say that the singing and dancing makes
plays more exciting. I would recommend the play to anyone. Overall, the play was fantastic! I
hope we get to see the play again.
