Receiving the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist from the cup is not a requirement, but receiving the blood of Christ is a fuller sign of the mystery we celebrate. This question continues to be asked, reflecting an uneasiness for some laypeople about resuming a practice unknown in the Roman Catholic Church for more than 600 years. In the church's first thousand years, Communion under a single species occurred

only as a pastoral exception for infants, the sick, and the dying. The gradual reserving of the cup to ordained clergy early in the second millennium was to safeguard against spills and counteract the erroneous view that the laity needed both species to receive the whole Christ.Today's restored opportunity to receive the sacramental Blood as well as Body of Christ lets us

Why drink from the cup continued: equally honor two invitations: "Eat my Body. Drink my Blood." Receiving from the cup is a heightened liturgical experience of sacrifice, covenant, unity, and sacred banquet. In the gospels, drinking from the cup is a sign of courageous discipleship. "Can you drink the cup that I will drink?" Jesus challenges. In the Garden of Gethsemane the same image expresses the ordeal awaiting Jesus. Not surprisingly, then, Communion from the cup implied for the early Christians an openness to martyrdom, a willingness to lay down one's life.If the Eucharist is the renewal of our covenant relationship, it is the cup that explicitly conveys this. In biblical accounts of the first Eucharist, and in our recollection at every Mass, each invitation to the chalice includes a reference to covenant. Our sacramental participation in the new covenant is most clearly expressed by sharing in the cup because-as Hebrews 9 reminds us-blood is a central sign of covenant. In the earliest generations of the church, the "breaking of the bread" suggested oneness because communicants shared a single loaf. Although separate wafers have clearly weakened that image, the shared cup resonates today with comparable implications. In our world, drinking from the same vessel is a dramatic expression of intimacy and connection-a rare practice even at a family table, a powerful statement in liturgy. Our Catholic tradition is deeply rooted in signs. But, as the Second Vatican Council recognized, the passage of centuries obscured some signs, and unfortunately some of the sacramental signs had shrunken to minimal proportions. A couple of drops of water sufficed for Baptism. A thumbprint of oil sufficed for sacramental anointings. Tasteless wafers sufficed for eucharistic bread. The Second Vatican Council made a deliberate effort to recover and clarify the sacramental signs, including the decision that "Communion under both kinds may be granted when the bishops think fit." Documents inspired by the council continued the restoration. The General Instruction at the front of the Roman Missal advised that the faithful should be guided to desire Communion under both species because "Holy Communion has a more complete form as a sign when it is received under both kinds." Repeatedly we are invited to seek fullness rather than legal minimums.Reception from the cup is definitely an option, not a requirement. Children's participation cannot be presumed without parents' approval. Recovering alcoholics' sensitivities must be respected. And reasonable concern would make all of us refrain from the cup at times when our poor health might put others at risk. Some parishioners have such a strong fear of contagion that they may never be comfortable doing it.Our short answer to anyone who asks, "Do I have to receive from the cup?" is certainly no; it is not imposed. As a concerned friend or parent, however, we might gently add, "But do you realize what you are missing?"

Next weekend, we will once again be offering the Blood of Christ during distribution of Communion. There will be three stations to receive the cup. 2 in the front of the church and one at the middle cross aisle. We encourage all to partake in both the Body and Blood of Christ.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,The Peter's Pence Collection supports Pope Francis as he reaches out in kindness and charity to those who are suffering. The Holy Father is the pilgrim of charity for Catholics everywhere. Your generosity helps ease the struggle of those who are most marginalized throughout the world and shows them the tender love of God. This Collection gives each of us the opportunity to be pilgrims of charity and unite us with the concerns of the Holy Father. Our gifts to the annual Peter's Pence Collection help the Holy Father provide emergency assistance to the most disadvantaged and those in need around the world, as well as to strengthen dioceses, religious orders, and struggling parishes when they need it most. The Diocese of Venice is scheduled to hold the Peter's Pence Collection on the weekend of June 30th and July 1st. Your generous support of this collection has ensured that the Successor of Peter is able to respond to those most in need throughout our world. Thank you for your generosity! Thinking about joining the Catholic Church, but feel a little lost? The RCIA inquiry stage is the starting place for adults who are thinking about entering the Catholic Church.“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10In the inquiry stage, you’re just finding out about Jesus, Christianity, and the Catholic Church. Talk to people, walk around in our shoes for a bit and get a feel for the place. As an inquirer, you’re not yet sure exactly what you think about the Catholic Church. Your main task here is to de-velop your faith a little bit, get to know Christ, prayer, the Catholic Church, and how Christians live. That’s the only way you can make an informed decision about entering the Catholic Church.Have you received the Sacrament of Confirmation?Just as bodies and minds grow, Catholics believe that the soul also needs to grow in the life of grace. The Sacrament of Confirmation builds on the sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation and Holy Communion, completing the process of initiation into the Catholic community.Want to Hear More? Please call the parish office at (239) 561-2245 and make an appointment to meet with Father Bob.

Vacation Bible Camp was amazing! Thank you to everyone who helped with our Shipwrecked VBS this summer by praying, planning, participating and the generous donations. It takes every part the church body to make VBS happen. We learned that God has the power to provide, to comfort, to heal, and to forgive. We challenged, taught, and led 134 children throughout four stations of learning in storytelling, recreation, Kid Vid Cinema, and Imagination Station. Our opening and closing sessions were awesome. Thank you to the 64 teens and 26 adults who helped us lead these children on a part of their faith journey. What a blessing to serve at St. John XXIII and see how God changes lives in amazing ways as we learn and celebrate His word!

ADORATIONCORNER

Come Sit With Me

“I have been praying during my weekly hour of Adoration, over many years, for my husband to return to Mass and the Sacraments as he has been away from the Church for 26 years. On a wet and very cold winter’s day he dropped me off at the Adoration Chapel for my holy hour. After the hour, he came to pick me up and waited outside in the car. After waiting for an extra twenty minutes, he lost patience and came into the Adoration Chapel to hurry me out. I pretended not to see him and he sat down very impatiently for a few minutes. Finally, I got up and he followed me. I was expecting a lot of anger and complaints because I stayed longer than the hour and kept him waiting. After getting into the car he turned to me, and said, calmly and quietly, “I am going to ask the priest in the parochial house to hear my confession. Something came over me as I entered that Adoration Chapel, and I felt God calling me back again”. He received forgiveness that day and he became a daily Mass goer and a weekly Adorer for the very first time. I put this down to the power of prayer in front of the Blessed Sacrament.”

TESTIMONIES from peoplewho have experienced weekly

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION:

An hour actually passes very quickly, but if done on a regular basis, it establishes a structure for your entire week.

A special thank you to all those who have supported our Respect for Life Ministry. Since its inception ten years ago, the ministry has endeavored to inform, educate, and encourage our parishioners to participate in the many causes that support the dignity, respect, and human rights of our brothers and sisters in Christ at all stages of life. To highlight some of our initiatives as a church community, we have participated in ten 40 Days for Life Campaigns, conduct monthly prayer vigils at the Fort Myers Abortion Clinic, funded two ultrasounds through the Knights of Columbus for Lifeline Family Center and Verity Pregnancy & Medical Resources Center, sponsored numerous guest speakers covering a range of topics (homelessness, mental illness, dementia, addiction, racism, human trafficking, abortion, and capital punishment), hosted a Parish Respect for Life Mission, held fund raisers and baby supply drives through the Craftie Ladies, Social Justice, and Youth Ministries to support pregnancy resource centers, offer pro-life intercessions before the recitation of the Rosary at daily Mass and during the prayers of the faithful at our weekend Masses, and participated in Catholic Days at the Capitol in Tallahassee to advocate for pro-life legislation. Although I’m stepping down as chairman of this ministry, I will continue to be active in the pro-life movement. In addition to the other ministries that I serve on, I’m a member of the steering committee forming the new Adoration Ministry. In closing, my prayer is that we all come to fully appreciate the gift and sacredness of life, and that our hearts are moved to love each other as God’s Master Pieces. Sincerely, Mike

This year our mission with FOCUS was abundantly blessed thanks to your generous support and faithful prayers. The liveliness and warmth of St. John XXIII Parish has been such an inspiration to us, and helped us to feel at home here. Last year we had the opportunity to share with you about this incredible ministry and now we are excited to update you on what has happened since then. As a reminder, FOCUS, The Fellowship of Catholic University Students, is a Catholic collegiate outreach program whose mission is to share the hope and joy of the gospel with college and university students. Trained in Church teaching, prayer, sacred Scripture, evangelization and discipleship, FOCUS missionaries encounter students in friendship where they are, inviting them into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and accompanying them as they pursue lives of virtue and excellence. Through Bible studies, outreach events, mission trips and one-on-one discipleship, missionaries inspire and build up students in the faith, sending them out to spread the good news and to live out the Great Commission: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations” (Mt. 28:19). We (Matt and Meaghan) have served collectively at 3 different college campuses over the past 3 years; The University of Maine, where we met, Seton Hall University in New Jersey, and Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, where we will continue together this upcoming year as an engaged couple! Last year at Temple and Seton Hall through the ministry of FOCUS, 200+ students regularly attended Bible study, 18 students served on foreign mission trips, 5 students said “yes” to becoming FOCUS

missionaries for the next two years, and 3 men are pursuing a priestly vocation! The young Church is alive and well. One of the young men pursuing a priestly vocation, Anh Mai, a junior at Temple University this past year, said that “it is undoubtedly clear that FOCUS was instrumental in my discernment to the priesthood. My earliest memory of influence stems from Santonio Hill (a missionary at Temple U) inviting me to an outing at the art museum, then dinner at Applebee’s.” In talking at dinner, it became clear to Ahn that Santonio and the other students had an intimacy with God that he wanted. Shortly afterwards, Anh was invited to attend a bible study with a friend (and fellow student) of his. This study helped to answer the questions he had about God, and laid the “foundation” for the pursuit of the seminary this upcoming fall. There are countless stories like Anh’s across the country because of the ministry of FOCUS.As missionaries there is no salary. So, our ministry is completely funded through the generosity of parishes, individuals and families like St. John XXIII. There will be over 600 missionaries on campus this year and you are our army of faithful, prayer warriors who play a crucial role in this mission. We cannot express enough our sincere gratitude to you. If you are interested in joining us in the mission through prayer, or financial support, contact Matt Piedimonte at (585) 208-1763, or email [email protected]. I would be honored to share with you more about the mission.
