Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,,

With the season of Lent come the beautiful rituals of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). Last weekend at the Cathedral, Coadjutor Archbishop Bernard Hebda called several of our baptized adult Catholic candidates, who will complete their Christian Initiation through Confirmation and Eucharist during the Easter Season, to ongoing holiness: Flor Bedoya, Jimmy Flores, Jazmine Garcia, Juana Landestoy, Kelsey Lapp, Christopher Leuffgen, Maryen Muñoz, Jennifer Pantoja, Allen Robles, Jenny Rose.

Through the Rite of Election, he also officially accepted the following baptized adult and child Catechumens for Full Initiation at the Easter Vigil: Annie Ortiz, Henry Hernandez, Jailin Martinez, Mario Martinez, Alex Zarate, Diana Zarate, Katherine Zarate, Kimberli Zarate, Jaime Zavala.

The candidates will undergo a Penitential Scrutiny at the 10:30am and 12:30pm Masses today. The Elect will participate in three Lenten Scrutinies at the 9am and 10:30am Masses on the three following Sundays, at which Masses the special Year A Readings for Catechumens will be used instead of the Year B Readings at the other Masses.

Please see the flyer in today’s bulletin about the parish receptions were are holding for you during the month of March for the We Are Living Stones Capital Campaign. I ask as many of you as possible to come to one of them to learn more about how you can help both the parish and the Archdiocese in providing for some of the needs and challenges we can face together. Please reply to the rectory with the date of your choice, so that we may be best prepared for you.

+++

As you may know, Fr. Ray’s 40th Ordination Anniversary celebration is scheduled for the end of May. If you would like to submit any photos of Fr. Ray in his ministry for a video display, please scan and email them to [email protected]. If you prefer to leave a photo at the rectory, it must be a copy that will not be returned. Thank you for your cooperation.

Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

The story of Abraham’s “binding” or near-sacrifice of Isaac may seem to be an example of how God’s command can suspend all normal ideas of morality, heightening the demands that faith places upon us and showing us the ultimately mysterious nature of God. Another way of reading this story is offered when we read it in tandem with our second reading, from Paul’s letter to the Christians in Rome, and our Gospel. In the story of the Transfiguration, the voice from the cloud identifies Jesus in the same terms by which Isaac is identified in the first reading, the “beloved son.” Moreover, God’s statement to Abraham - “you did not withhold from me your own beloved son” - echoes Paul’s statement that God did not spare his own son, but handed him over for us all.” In this way, the juxtaposition of the readings invites us to read the story of Abraham’s willingness to give up his son as a foreshadowing of God’s willingness to hand over Christ for our salvation. In the story of the binding of Isaac, the ram becomes a substitute sacrifice for Isaac. In the Gospels, it is Jesus, God’s beloved Son, who becomes the sacrificial Lamb who takes away the sins of the world. In handing his Son over for our salvation, Paul says, God gives us “everything else along with him.” Rather than suspending all ideas of morality, God’s handing over of Jesus reveals a moral order based on self-sacrifice and generosity, in which God becomes the supreme example of such generosity, an example we are invited to follow. “Make us ready, O Lord, to follow you wherever you might lead, confident in our belief that you accompany us on our journey and will keep us safe. Amen.”

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“‘Here I am!,’ he answered.” Genesis 22: 11

It is easy to say, “Here I am, Lord,” when we are kneeling in church. Can we just as easily answer, “Here I am, Lord,” when we go home, when a neighbor needs our help, when a fellow parishioner asks us to join a committee, or when a letter asks for our financial help? These are often exactly the places where Jesus calls us to be.

11,000 Acts of Kindness A Positive Approach to Lent

Transfiguration students have accepted a Lenten challenge. The Administration has challenged each student to do “1” act of kindness a day for the 40 days of Lent. If each of our 276 students does this, then we have 276 students doing 40 acts of kindness or 11,040 kind deeds during Lent. More importantly, it will instill in them the habit of doing good deeds throughout the year, and hopefully throughout their lives. Just imagine the kind of world we can have if everyone did just “1” Act of Kindness a day.

Wedding Anniversary Celebrations We are once again preparing the annual tradition of honoring those couples in our Archdiocese who will be celebrating five, twenty-five and fifty years of Christian marriage in the year 2015. The presence of a large number of couples will give favorable witness to the strength and stability of Christian marriage in today’s society. These anniversary liturgies will be celebrated by Archbishop John J. Myers in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark as follows: April 19, 2015 3:00pm ~ 50 years (All Counties) May 3, 2015 3:00pm ~ 25 years & 5 years (All Counties) Registration Forms are available at the Rectory.
