Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On this Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi), it is good to remember the beautiful gift we have in the Eucharist, where Jesus offers Himself to us in the sacramental signs of bread and wine. As the summer is once again upon us, I remind everyone of the proper attire for Sunday worship: tank tops, short shorts, shirts with offensive slogans, or other overly revealing clothing is not appropriate in church. As I mentioned in this week’s Catholic Advocate, we pastors would prefer our parishioners to “reveal more of their faith and love and less of their skin and physique” during Sunday Mass. Of course, sensitivity to those at prayer before Mass should preclude casual conversations inside the church. Even afterwards, it is better to take such conversations outside the church, so that those who wish to offer some private prayers may do so without distraction.

+++

As I mentioned last week, I am pleased to have Father Cyrus Gallagher, OFM, Cap., and Father Mark Lane, C.O., come to our parish this weekend, to speak to you about the marvelous work being done by the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging. See the insert in today’s bulletin for more information.

Fr. Gallagher has graciously agreed to stay in our parish from Sunday evening through Wednesday noon, while your priests attend our Archdiocesan Convocation. During that time, Fr. Gallagher will offer the daily Masses at 9am and 7:30pm as well as hear evening confessions, while Deacon Jim Detura will conduct a communion service at 7am.

We invite you to pray for us, your priests, during the time of our Convocation. Please use the following prayer:

Praise be to you, Father of Our Lord Jesus Christ. In your great love for us, you have called men to the priesthood to care of the needs of your people.

We ask your blessings on the priests of the Archdiocese of Newark as they gather in support of each other for a time of prayer and fraternity.

Send your Holy Spirit upon them. As you nourished and sustained your apostles, fill them with apostolic zeal for souls.

Strengthen them with the courage of Christ the reconciler. Rekindle in them the joy, enthusiasm and passion they felt on their ordination day,

so that when they return, they may continue their mission and priestly presence among us. You are the giver of all good gifts.

We thank you for the gift of the priesthood and these men you have given us. Renew them so that they will continue to “Abide in Christ and Bear Much Fruit.” Amen.

Thank you to contributors old and new for the 2011 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. Our current pledge total has risen to $198,743.00, which is more than 208% of our goal of $95,371.00, and more than 82% of our stretch goal of $242,021.00. Please consider joining your fellow parishioners to reach this year’s stretch goal, which brings the largest rebate to our parish while also helping so many archdiocesan agencies and ministries. Please fill out a pledge card, available in the church or rectory.

Msgr. Richard Arnhols

Reflection on Today’s Gospel

Jesus proclaimed Himself as the Living Bread come down from heaven, bringing eternal life to all who eat it. We approach the table of the Eucharist to receive the bread and drink the wine, the Body and Blood of Christ made present through the power of the Holy Spirit.

We remember that Jesus did this on the night before he died, and told his disciples to “do this in memory of me.” When we do this, the saving event of Christ’s death and resurrection is made present in the broken bread and wine poured out for us. We enter into communion with the risen Lord and one another.

Through our sharing in the memorial meal, Christ re-members us as his body and sends us out to witness to God’s fidelity in the past and God’s promise for the future: a world renewed, restored, reborn in the Spirit. God continues to feed us on the road from slavery to freedom, from death to life.

Liturgy Notes On November 27, 2011, the English speaking Catholic Church in the USA will begin using a new translation of the prayers used at Mass (The Roman Missal). A series of quotes explaining the parts of the Mass from the General Instruction to the Roman Missal (GIRM) will be posted here weekly, to help the reader participate more fully in the Sunday Mass.

The Duties of the People of God In the celebration of Mass the faithful form a holy people, a people whom God has made his own, a royal priesthood, so that they may give thanks to God and offer the spotless Victim not only through the hands of the priest but also together with him, and so that they may learn to offer themselves. They should, moreover, endeavor to make this clear by their deep religious sense and their charity toward brothers and sisters who participate with them in the same celebration. Thus, they are to shun any appearance of individualism or division, keeping before their eyes that they have only one Father in heaven and accordingly are all brothers and sisters to each other. Indeed, they form one body, whether by hearing the word of God, or by joining in the prayers and the singing, or above all by the common offering of Sacrifice and by a common partaking at the Lord’s table. This unity is beautifully apparent from the gestures and postures observed in common by the faithful. (GIRM 95-96) Office of Divine Worship—www.RomanMissalNewark.org

RCIA - Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Now is the time for adults who have never been baptized or those who were baptized in another denomination, who are considering entering the Catholic Church, to begin the period of inquiry of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. The unbaptized participate in a two year process of doctrinal and faith formation. Baptized non-Catholics, as well as baptized Catholic adults who never received their First Holy Communion and/or Confirmation, engage in a one year review of our Catholic Faith in preparation for completion of the Sacraments of Initiation. If you or someone you know fit into any of these categories, please contact Msgr. Richard or Deacon Jim for our English program and Fr. Manuel for our Spanish program. Inquiry precedes the instructional and formational sessions which will begin this autumn.
